its a shame about some of the reviews for this hotel as i feel some comments were unfair, especialy the food, yes it was different and maybe not what you are used to at home, but hey wernt we eating in a different country with their own tradition of what to cook and present for eating, or do we all go for a carbon copy of what we can eat at home (in which case why go abroad) i have stayed at some 4 star hotels in Sorrento and the food was more or less the same on offer, at least the Capri was clean and well cooked and served by two great waiters one of which had a lovely high high pitched way of saying "OK" fantastic.

yes i agree about the communal and bar areas, but hey didnt we go on holiday to sit in the hotel or see the fantasic sights that are available, the room itself was clean and well presented, my air con worked lucky me haha, the locatation of the hotel is very well placed for easy access to the city and transportation routes.

we had a great experience at this hotel and apart from the ignorant and totally unhelpfull night porter the staff were great

i would recommend this hotel, for people who want to enjoy a holiday and accept that in a different country food is different too

I stayed in this hotel with my wife for a week. The hotel is in a great location at the top of the town.We stayed on a half board basis. There was a real effort made with the dinners although this ment you didn't always like the look of what was on offer. When sitting for dinner the smallist tables sat four so you had no choice but to sit with strangers. The hotel staff were friendly and the rooms clean. If your after a suntan the roof is accesable and has loungers e.t.c.Sorrento itself is great but small.I found that the real plus to this area is going down to the harbour {10min walk} where all the boats operate like buses. From here you have a great choice of destinations, Capri,Naples,Amalfi coast e.t.c. One last tip , if you crave some food other than pasta & pizza leave the hotel turn left 5 mins up the road there is a very nice Chinese on the right.

I was very disappointed with the Hotel Capri. Whilst the room was generally OK (clean, bright, reasonable size), the public areas of the hotel are horrible. The bar/restaurant area is dreary and the breakfast isn't very good. The reception staff, when they are there, are miserable and unhelpful. When I checked in, I had to go looking in the kitchen to find a member of staff. I paid 90Euro for a double room/night which by Amalfi coast standards isn't too bad, but in his case, I would rather have paid more to stay somewhere nicer. The aircon didn't work in the room, so it was very stuffy at night. As others have pointed out, you can't open the window/door for the rooms streetside as the hotel is on a noisy main road. However, it was only a 5 min walk into the main town for restaurants, bars, shops etc..

Fairly seedy-looking downstairs, reception staff absent and sometimes surly. Room cleaned well. Good location. Unfriendly prohibition notices including one saying you are not allowed to drink your own water by the pool. Poor breakfast/coffee.

Having read the earlier reviews we were a little concerned at what we would find. We hardly needed to worry. THIS IS A CLEAN,COMFORTABLE HOTEL. The food varied every night of our fortnight, everything was perfectly edible and references to cold vegetable buffet is a bit unfair--- it is in fact a salad bar with ten choices, many of them peppers, aubergines, courgettes etc in typical Italian style. The waiters are the most obliging and entertaining we have come accross.
The pool is small but is a suntrap from noon onwards with very good chairs and loungers.
The only true balconies are at the back and it would seem that none are contacted to Thomson. However we insisted that we wanted the back and they obliged. There are eccentricities--- we asked for a key to the safe deposit box and found it was not screwed to the wall. I commented on this and they said none were.
The Thomson rep visits at 8am so not seen much.
The hotel is yards from the station. In addition to the obvious trips on the buses and train, try Castellamare on the train and go up the cable car from the train platform .
The pizzeria over the road is great,da Franco. There is a shortage of quaint bars so the Foreigners Club is the obvious hang out. It is incredibly cheap at the municipal sports ground which is behind the Capri and right at the museum, following along and opposite the Ambasciatore hotel. Large beer 1.8 euroand bottle of wine 5 euro.
Apart from the da Franco the best restaurant we used was the Sorrento Inn down the main lane.

A great little hotel within the midst of an enchanting italian resort.
The waiters/ porters were most helpful and the food we found to be traditionally italian and more importantly - enjoyable!

We chose the hotel for its location- we like the city hustle and bustle - we were not dissappointed.

I would consider the hotel to be a "no frills" and should people expect to be pampered by the hotel staff then I could not recommend the Capri, but for value, great food, friendliness and location, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

We look forward to returning in October 2007

We arrived very late in the evening on 24 August and were given a plated up meal of cold meats, which after reading reviews before we left confirmed our worries about the quality of meals others had commented on.
We have to say that this was the only time we were not satisfied with the quality of our meals and can only think that previous reviewers were not into the Italian way of cooking. There were always 4 choices of starters/main meal and a buffet of vegetables and salads etc. and a choice of desserts. ALL the hotel staff (including the night porter) were pleasant and friendly. Rooms were clean and towels replaced on a daily basis with a satisfactory air conditioning facility (good thing with temperatures in the high 80's!!)
Overall an enjoyable holiday.
