Just had a week here in late October chosen mainly from the reviews. Everything was perfect. we had a room with seaview on the 3rd floor with an enormous terrace and despite the fact the weather was lovely for 5 days, it was only after a storm that we were able to see Capri, Naples and Vesuvious. The food is outstanding and as a coeliac, was the most choice of menu I have ever had- amazing in Italy. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff and the courtesy bus is a big bonus as the hotel itself is out of Sorrento. It was easy to travel to Pompeii and Herculaneum on the local train and quite an experience! The clientele is mostly older travellers and it is not really a children orientated hotel although there were families there. The pool is huge and good for swimming. As the hotel is on the side of a winding, quite busy road we chose not to take the risk of walking into Sorrento but others did and lived to tell the tale! We shall definitely return at a lighter time of year to enjoy more of the surrounding areas. Well done to all concerned.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front overlook the road but have the seaview. A higher room gives better views.

My family and I visited at the end of October 2012 and found the hotel to be excellent in every department. The whole hotel was spotlessly clean, the food excellent and, most importantly, the staff were just so friendly and helpful. They were especially great with our young children too. The hourly shuttle bus to and from Sorrento meant we didn't have to drive all the time, which was great for me (the driver!). All in all, I can highly recommend this hotel to anyone. Brilliant!

Just returned from a weeks holiday in Sorrento, Italy at the La Solara Hotel (26th Oct - 2nd Nov 2012) - room 302. Had an absolutley fabulous time in this lovely resort. The La Solara was every bit of its 5 star rating. A real homely feel and we were made extremely welcome the minute we arrived by the hotel staff. Fantastic food served every evening by a great team in the dining room and nothing was too much trouble for them. The whole hotel was spotlessly clean. The curtesy shuttle bus service from the hotel was very efficient and made travelling to & from Sorrento Town very easy (running hourly). The lounge area was a great place to enjoy a drink or two or simply relax in comfortable surroundings and let the world go by. A real personal touch with a luxury italian chocolate delivered to the room every evening. Our first holiday in italy was a great experience & the La Solara certainly contriubuted to a fantastic time we had. We have never previously completed holiday reviews but felt compelled to do so in this case as the Hotel was so impressive & will certainly return sometime in the future...

We are pretty much independent travellers and like to sample the local culture, have a go at speaking the language, etc. Bearing this in mind, this hotel is not the kind of place we'd normally end up in. It was full of coach parties and had entertainment on in the evenings! Having said that, it was easy enough to opt out of the 'Saga' aspects of the hotel; rarely have we stayed in a place that is so clean and the shuttle bus to and from town meant we were easily able to do our own thing. There was a fantastic spread at breakfast and the staff were very good (reflected, I think,in the comments of other reviewers who probably spent more time in the hotel, engaging with staff).

Two tips: if you arrive under your own steam you catch the free hotel shuttle bus from the road behind the railway station (Via degli aranchi), turn right and the bus stop is on the bridge. Also we paid extra (with a booking website) for a balcony- I think all rooms have a balcony!

Just back from honeymoon at La Solara. We really cannot add anything more to previous reviews describing the lovely friendly staff, the cleanliness of the hotel and pool, the range of absolutely delicious food - pasta perfectly al dente - the shuttle bus, etc, etc. We had room overlooking pool on top floor and given champagne, basket of fruit, and plate of nibbles on arrival. We used Thomson's excursions (Amalfi Drive, Vesuvius 4x4 and Herculaneum/Pompeii which were well organised - especially if you get Alberio the tour guide) to get a taste of the area but agree with Sandyman57's tips re how easy it is to explore on your own (which we did with Capri) and being able to spend longer in Herculaneum and Pompeii on diy trips. The trek up to Villa Lysis and Villa Jovis on Capri was worth it but 14Euros for 2 x coffees and a small slice of cake in the harbour cafe was bit of a rip off. Cheryl our very good Thomson's rep recommended buying single tickets to avoid having to come back at a set time, and to go by ferry to Naples as it's cheaper for shopping than Sorrento (sadly didn't have time to take advantage ...!). We don't want to put people off Naples but a couple of other guests also recommended using the Naples ferry as it drops you in a better place in Naples. They said they felt a little uneasy around Naples train station and needed to keep wits about them and valuables hidden. Guess the same as any big city across the world - good and less good districts. That said everywhere we did go we found a smile and trying a few words in Italian gets you a long way.
Thank you La Solara! We have no hesitation in recommending you or the region.

Room Tip: Room 502 was lovely - large terrace, had sun all day, overlooked pool, didn't notice the road no...

We had a lovely time at this hotel. Staff are really friendly and helpful. Hotel rooms and all amenities are immaculately clean. Short complimentary coach ride from hotel to centre of Sorrento very convenient. Great value for money. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone.

Returned from a week's stay through Thomson and this is the hotel to go to if you do not want to be anonymous in a many-roomed hotel. The accommodation is excellent, the staff bellisimo and the swimming pool absolutely lovely as it is heated. There are loungers near the pool and you are not harrassed by staff to order coffee, beer, cocktails etc. as in some other hotels. The staff are very helpful and friendly but not overbearing. The chefs work hard to present a varied, excellent Italian menu. There are 4 courses to the evening meal which is exquisitely waiter served by Marcello and his experienced team.. The breakfast is buffet style with plenty of cereals, fresh fruit, scrambled & boiled eggs, a hot plate that might be sausages or bacon, plenty of butter and rolls. I did not see any soya milk, but I would think if you requested it, you would get it.

I have seen reviews where some people are not happy with the location of their rooms. If you book through Thomson, when the "seaview" rooms with balcony are sold out then the allocation is to rooms on the side. The hotel faces west which is seaview, so after that pick the south facing side and the 3rd floor or above if you want a view. I imagine if you booked the north side or the east facing rear, you would not get a view at all. It is difficult as your contract is with Thomson and contractually if you have a double room with balcony that does not guarantee a view. If you are booking direct, I expect you can specify.

I do not know why Thomson describe this as "off the beaten track" when they do not describe the Azzua Nastro which is bigger and definitely "off the beaten track" being way out of Sorrento. Although you cannot walk into Sorrento, there is a clean, efficient small hotel bus that leaves on the dot every hour for the centre of Sorrento 10 minutes away, and returns at 15 mins past the hour, every hour until 11.15pm. If you need to go for a walk after dinner and find the local windy, narrow road too dangerous, catch the Hotel Bus into town and have a walk around there. There is a volcanic "beach" more of an inlet with some tavernas and small fishing boats in the high season. It is a long walk down, and an even more strenuous and longer walk up. But it is possible. Better the lovely heated enormous pool.

The hotel bus makes it possible to to go to the Marina and catch the ferries for Capri and Ischcia and also to the Sorrento Railway Station and catch a train to many stations all the way north to Naples and beyond. Using this you can visit Pompeii and Herculeum (Ercolini). What is more difficult is going around the Amalfi coast south-east to Positano, Ravello, Minori, Maori, Salerno, Pastum, etc. as it is very narrow, long and winding but the local buses do follow the route but you would have to allow plenty of time.

This hotel is a lovely find and we noted there were many more mature couples who returned year after year - just for the food. We would definitely visit again. Thank you Ugo and All Your Excellent Team

Room Tip: Room on west facing front have sea views. If not available, book rooms on south facing side at leas...
