“Dated and tired hotel in great location”
Reviewed July 28, 2009

Unless you can get a really good rate (we payed 100 Euros per double, which is rather good), I could not warmly reccomend this hotel due to the uninviting bathrooms and general run down conditions of the guest rooms. They are in dire need of a re-fit.

The elavator did not work in our part of the hotel.

The hotel insists that everyone wears swim-caps in the pool (salt water), which one can buy from the pool-boy for 3 Euros.

The snack-bar at the beach area - reachable by stairs or tiny elevator - offers a decent lunch and good coffee. The small hotel beach is right next to a yacht marina and the busy main ferry docks.

What in general puzzled us most was that the attitude of the staff - and thus the owners/management - alle seemed relatively uninterested in running good a hotel. What has clearly been a great 4 star hotel is slowly turning in to a 3 star - at best - and few seems to care or take interest. Very strange, since it could be such a nice place.

One almost hopes that a leading hotel chain will buy the Europa Palace Grand Hotel, and pour some of their resources into it, to restore it to what it was, or could be. If so, they could double the price (or more), and it would be worth it.

The hotels force is of course its great location. It is very close to Sorrento's main square, and the views from the hotel at sunset are simply wonderful. Sipping a drink at the terrace before dinner is amazing, with its splendid view of the bay and Vesuv. Strange then, that the hotel and staff does not make more of this. Slow and moderately interested waiters, and no effort from the management to advertise or make this terrace an "it" place. Would be so easy.

Also, the breakfast is excellent (for Italy) and is served on the patio, with its great view. The breakfast staff actually smiled!

We LOVED Europa Palace! Firstly, from the train station, we were quoted by a taxi driver 15 euros to take a taxi to the hotel!!! The hotel was a TWO minute walk, across the road, through the small piazza and then across the next road.

PERFECT location if you are walking places. Close to train station, three minute walk to Piazza Tasso, five minute walk down to the port.

We chose a basic room which was adequate, but I imagine the views from the beach side would be amazing!

We loved our private beach and the panoramic views from the pool were unbelievable!!! We didn't know which to go to first!!!

Disappointing there was no internet access unless you had your own lap top. And overall as a whole it was very difficult to find internet cafes in Sorrento.

Breakfasts were amazing. Beautiful coffees, lots to choose from, sitting out on the terrace with staff waiting to help you.... On our departure we had to leave the hotel very early and they even prepared us a little bag each with things for breakfast. That was very nice.

Overall, I was VERY happy with our stay at Europa Palace. We were only disappointed we had only three nights there...

Perched on a cliff top right on the water overlooking the Bay of Naples. We did not have an expensive front room , we had one of the cheaper ones which were at the back overlooking the street park etc. However it was double glazed and very quiet even though street has reasonable traffic . It is very handy to banks, shops, and only 400 metres to railway station. If you have to drag luggage it is pretty easy. Breakfast was wonderful on the terrace or indoors, with views of the Bay and Mt Vesuvious. The terrace which all guests can use has 180degrees view of the Bay. At night the lights are wonderful. You also have access to the swimming pool and pontoon situated below at the cliff bottom. Access is via a lift which goes down through the cliff about 50 metres. It comes out to a small tunnel which leads you to the water. The lift ride, tunnel etc is eerie, but really great. An attendant will give you a towel and arrange a liedown for you on the pontoon. Swimming in the Bay of Naples how good is that. Hotel is a grand place, huge ceilings ,big public areas for guest use.

My wife, my 5 year old son and I stayed in the Europa for a week recently. Although the rooms were not what I expected for a 4 star hotel (no shower curtain, no way to hang the shower up when having a shower) this in no way reduced my satisfaction or enjoyment. The views are spectacular, I had no problems with the food and the fact that the hotel is so old and sometimes made me feel like I was staying in a museum only added to my overall experience as there is a lot of history attached to this hotel and if you take the time to chat to the staff they may share some stories with you.

The staff were brilliant. Friendly, chatty and brilliant with our 5 year old son. All smiles and "Bonjournos" every day. The pool area was beautiful and clean with great views. The beach/sea area was clean and safe and the staff very attentive.

The location is hard to beat with a park of sorts immediately across the road and the centre of Sorrento 5 mins walk at most so you have no need of taxis.

I have recommended both the area and the hotel to everyone I have spoken to since I came home and if I ever return to Sorrento(as I hope some day to) I will definitely be staying here again.

The main reasons we chose this hotel were its convenient location for the shops and restaurants of Sorrento (taxis are horrifically expensive there) and the pool and sea access. We were not disappointed with either. The room was amazing - we were lucky enough to get an upgrade from a sea-view room to a suite. The view of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius from the balcony was beautiful, and the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. Breakfast was served on a terrace overlooking the bay. The breakfast was no better or worse that what I have found the standard of breakfast in Italian hotels to usually be, whatever their star rating. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Hotel staff reasonably friendly and helpful and spoke good english. The room overlooked a building site which wasn't in use fortunately, as the noise from the road which runs along the back of the hotel was considerable as was the noise from the service area directly underneath room 120. After being woken several times during first night by staff using service area and traffic we asked to be moved but we were told all rooms were occupied. Eventually swopped rooms with tour guide which was quieter but just as dismal and dated. Location is excellent, breathtaking views from terrace. Have to take a lift to get to the pool, quite a trek. Food was dreadful, ate out 2 of the 7 nights and would have done more if wasn't so expensive. Hotel is frequently used for weddings which seem to have priority over hotel guests who get pushed away from the dinning terrace and into a inferior dinning room at the back. Everything magically appears for a wedding, cushions for the terrace chairs, etc., they even lit the oil burners which border the terrace and give it extra ambience. Definately will not be returning despite its beautiful location.

Had a seven day stay at the hotel in May. Could not fault the location which has fantastic views at the front of the hotel. However, our room at the back was noisy with scooter and other traffic going on through the night. It was either windows open with noise or windows shut and very hot because the air conditioning does not come on until June, even though in May we had unusually hot weather. The thing that lets this hotel down is the food, certainly not 4 star. Everything was salty and the evening meal main course was worse than a school dinner. Unfortunately we were half board so we felt we should stick with it but that was probably a mistake. The breakfast was reasonable apart from poor juices, tinned fruit and worst of all the coffee, which was served as if real but in fact tasted like very, very strong instant. Undrinkable. For these reasons we would never go back but our advice would be if you can afford a room at the front, don’t go half board and don’t drink coffee you’d probably be OK.
