“Heavenly hotel, heavenly holiday!!!!”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We had been to Sorrento twice before but the Riviera was very highly recommended to us so we decided that we would try the Riviera the following year(2012), after having a look around, we were very impressed !!! We had booked to go in September just for 1 week, however our plans changed and I phoned the hotel and within 2 minutes our stay was extended by 4 more days and arranged a car to collect us from Naples airport, without any fuss or hassle!
We had a wonderful welcome and the gentleman who I had spoken to, made us feel like VIP's when we arrived. We asked about visting a fish restaraut in the marina and within a couple of minutes they had book a table, a car to collect us and pick us up again, all with a smile!
Top marks to all the reception staff!
We had the most beautiful room, that even had a superb view of the volcano from the bathroom, how cool is that! The bed we found to be so comfortable with beautiful linen and towels, spotless bathroom and plenty of toiletries, thick gowns which were changed on a regular basis rather than weekly as most hotels do! The maids did a excellent job again top marks!
We had breakfast every morning out on the terrace with a full view of the bay of Naples and Sorrento's marina. The breakfast was plentiful and suited every nationality!Top marks again!
We were just staying on a bed and breakfast basic, however one night we stayed in for dinner and Steve ordered Pea Risotto as starter which I tried after I finished my prawns. What a risotto!!! It was just heaven, I had never tasted a risotto like it, simply the best ever!!!
We spent a lot of time down on the deck which has a lift down to it and is a private decked area, which has ample sun loungers, towels and parasols. The area is looked after by Carmine (sorry if it's spelt wrong), he was such a funny and friendly guy with such a dry sense of humour, he had us in stitches but was very knowledgeable about the area and was very attentive to all the guests.Top marks again!
We were very sad to leave but we said that we would come back in a couple of years because we had arranged to go to America in September 2013 to visit family! However we have now booked 1 week back at the Riviera in May because although we are looking forward to visiting the States, I feel that I left my heart at the Grand Hotel Riviera in Sorrento, beautiful hotel, fabulous views, rooms, food but I think that the staff are the best and it's the staff that makes a holiday special, they certainly did for us!!!!
This year we are celebrating 20 years of our meeting so it's a special year for us and I can't think of any where else we could go to make our anniversary so special!
PS. This year we are going bed, breakfast and dinner so we don't miss out on that Risotto!!!

Room Tip: Choose a seaview!!!

We stayed here for a week in May 2012 and would most definitely recommend this hotel for a break. Great service with friendly staff. Pool was lovely and so too was the beach area. Hotel has beautiful views over the bay. Within easy walking distance of Sorrento.

Definitely one to visit for a very relaxing stay.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from the 5th to the 12th October 2012. It is located on the cliff edge in a quieter area of Sorrento. I suspect that if there is a football match at the nearby ground it could be a little noisy for a short time. It commands excellent views over the Bay of Naples towards Vesuvius.
The hotel is well appointed and I could not find any fault with the food which I thought was excellent. Again all the staff were fine even though it was coming to the end of the season and I suspect they were a little weary and thinking of their holidays.
There was a problem with the room (219) which was kept clean and tidy but seemed to have a problem with ants. We were not the only room affected. The hotel made attempts to deal with the issue but they seemed to pop out of the woodwork for the whole week and I suspect we even retuned to ‘blighty’ with one or two in the suitcases. That said we had an excellent holiday at the hotel and I recommend the bathing platform to go for a safe swim but the cost of the drinks there will make your eyes water.
Others have commented of the small bar some 100 metres to the right of the hotel next to the football and tennis club. It is well worth frequenting as the beer and wine are cheap for Sorrento and they will make you a meal to take on the plane and all done with a smile!

Whilst this is a lovely hotel with excellent staff, it certainly has its downside. Our room was really quite small with virtually no view. Breakfast was average and the evening meal was certainly not 4 star, in fact we ate out on more than one occasion which was a pity considering we had booked half board. If you are a vegetarian or diabetic beware, you have only one choice every day and that's it. The evening meal was a great disappointment. Bar and wine prices are excessive especially when you consider there is a small bar/cafe nearby which charges only a quarter of the hotel price. There was no evening entertainment leaving the hotel like 'The Mary Celeste', totally without soul. The swimming pool is more like a large paddling pool!! Another disappointment. There were no courtesy daily newspapers, which is something we would expect from a 4* hotel (rated a 5T with Thomson's), Didn't get much sleep as he beds were as hard as bricks.

This is a nice hotel but be aware of its failings.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a view then be prepared to pay for it.

The hotel is in a lovely location with excellent views. Both breakfast and dinner were great, good food and decent quantities. The whole place was spotlessly clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only downside was the price of drinks, though it was only a short distance to other more reasonably priced bars in the area. Would have no hesitation in recommending to others.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Riviera from the 1st Oct to the 8th whilst we were in Sorrento for our wedding. The hotel is lovely and always kept very clean. We were in room 208 and had a great view of the bay of Naples. We were half board and the food was lovely and always plenty of choice. Fried eggs on toast and bucks fizz for breakfast whilst sitting on the terrace enjoy the views was a fab way to start the day. The waiters were all very friendly, especially Claudio, Gennaro and Michele. The private jetty was a great place to sunbathe and take a dip in the sea. It was only a ten minute walk into the main square which is great as taxis are very expensive. Sorrento is one of the most prettiest places I have ever been to and we are already planning on going back for our first anniversary.

Room Tip: 208 is a great room

This hotel is in a great location, with beautiful views over the Bay of Naples. The rooms are spacious and clean. The staff are helpful and friendly.

The hotel is only a short walk from the town centre and it has it's own pool and a lift that goes down to the sea

The buffet breakfast is delicious and included in the room price.
