We had a wonderful, relaxing holiday at GH Aminta. This is a very quiet hotel on the green hillside overlooking Sorrento bay. All the staff were superb, the rooms (and all the hotel reception areas) were very clean and cool (great air-conditioning), with breathtaking views. After a busy week in Rome we travelled by train to Napoli. The hotel arranged mini-van pick-up, which we felt was worth paying for as we arrived quickly and easily and went straight to the poolside, where we spent the next few days enjoying the sparkling 3m deep main pool. Just right for our teenagers. We enjoyed cool drinks brought to our sunbeds. Bliss! Yes, you can reserve beds at 4 euros each, which we did for our first days as we were going to use them all day. On other days we'd see if any sunbeds were free (just depended on how many guests were going on trips) or we'd use the free poolside chairs for a while. Poolside towels were provided.

We used the free hotel shuttle bus but you can walk down to town on the 'rural' path Not so easy back up the hill later - take a torch if walking in the dark and watch out for scooters! We like walking but soon opted for the bus. We tended to go to town early each evening for dinner and catch the 9.30pm bus back before having a drink at the hotel bar. There are numerous restaurants to choose from in town. Although excellent, the hotel restaurant was formal (dress code) and the fixed menu was 30 euros each plus drinks so we only treated ourselves once. We ate lunch at the hotel as they served pizzas etc for 9 euros or so on the terrace.

Breakfast was a huge spread of cereals, breads, cheese, fruit, cakes etc plus some hot food. We were told that our b&b room rate included a la carte but we never felt the need. Lovely staff brought me copious cups of tea at breakfast (note no hot drinks facilities in main hotel rooms but there are well-stocked mini-bars).

We went on one day trip. We started early (before the shuttle bus) and went by train to Pompeii station where we paid for the 4x4 trip to Vesuvius. Afterwards, we had time for a leisurely lunch before exploring Pompeii. There were lots of boat/coach trips you could book whilst in Sorrento, either through the hotel or in town. This was a really great holiday: it's easy to get around, you can be lazy or you can do lots of sightseeing, the town itself felt very safe and everyone was friendly. Thank you to GH Aminta for looking after us so well. We hope to return.

This hotel is in a terrific location. Beauiful views across the bay and an easy drive to Positano/Amalfi/Pompei/Naples etc.

Parking at the hotel is tight. But once you have dropped off your luggage, you can park in a small area across the road, which we never had trouble finding a space in, despite visiting in July/August.

Reception staff are very helpful and speak a number of languages.

Rooms are very well appointed, scrupulously clean, with efficient air con. You'll need it, it was 32-35 every day during our visit.

The dining room is quite formal and old fashioned. But this is usual in southern Italy. Don't forget that you can order hot food for breakfast at no charge if the buffet doesn't grab you. The staff don't tell you this and there aren't menus on the tables. Just ask. Similarly, the guy who comes round with the tea/coffee trolley will provide you with Earl Grey/Infusuins/cappuccinos/hot chocolate etc, but you have to ask. He won't volunteer.

We didn't eat dinner at the hotel as it looked too formal for us. Instead we took the shuttle bus to Sorrento (every hour on the hour) and ate at a different restaurant every night in the open air.

The only downsides of this hotel are the return shuttle bus (every hour on the half hour). It doesn't run at 10.30pm. So you're either in a hurry to catch the 9.30pm or wait for 11.30pm. We mostly caught a taxi. But be warned it's 30 euros!

The other main fault is the pool area. It's small. They all are in this part of the world as space is at a premium. It's also deep, right from the edges. No shallow parts at all. And the splash pool is tiny and people are often sitting around it.

In fact people are sitting everywhere on the deck. It's packed. We hired sunbeds (4 euros each) but those that didn't ended up with deck chairs squeezed in any corner.

That said, it is nice and quiet. The pool bar is cool, comfortable and reasonably priced. Lunch is served well and the choice is good.

We stayed here in feb 2013 and have not had a chance to review before but I hope my points are still valid
Having fancied the Amalfi coast for a while I wasn't sure which area to stay in and am so glad we chose the grand aminta and Sorrento. As a wheelchair user and carer couple from what we saw I feel this area was best suited to our needs. It is convenient for the bus terminal train station and ferry to Capri and Naples . Other tourist resorts appeared a bit too steep or remote.
The hotel itself is spotlessly clean with superb rooms some giving picturesque views over the bay of Naples to Vesuvius . There are about 10 steps to enter the hotel so if you are totally immobile this may not suit you. There is a lift to all floors once inside. The bar has a superb huge window from which you can enjoy that beautiful view. The food in the restaurant is varied tasty well cooked and beautifully presented. The waiting staff are very polite helpful and work so hard. Also very handy is the complimentary pick up and drop off to Sorrento town centre. If you get Rolando a few tips always help as he works tirelessly.
We took advantage of booking direct with the hotel and saved good money on their great winter deal. Flights were booked independently but the hotel had the pick up waiting for us as part of the deal. Always handy when to book this through travel agent was an extra £100 or so..
I had intended to hire a car initially but I know the driving is difficult and hairy in the extreme from the airport and along the coast, and was glad I changed my mind. For about €7.80 you can get an all day bus ticket. One of the buses takes you along the scenic Amalfi coast route so let the driver take the strain.
The train ticket to Pompeii costs about €2 if you are a wheelchair user speak to the train staff. They are very helpful and give you the best route as there is no subway to get across when you arrive at pompeii so you go to the next stop and come back one to arrive at the xorrect platform. Also if you have time consider Herculaneum. We were given free tickets due to the wheelchair. Obviously the ancient Romans were not accessibility minded so make sure your carer is fit and that you can mobilise a bit.
One tip for visiting Pompeii we were not told of. There is an entrance down the hill past the main entrance ( you turn right from the station). If you enter the main gate there is a massive hill which is cobbled with huge stones and rutted impossible to access safely in a chair. Even people with baby buggies struggled.
Sorry to be a bore there is so much more I could say about these places but I don't want to make it sound too appealing and let the secret out. I will definitely be returning.... We loved the Grand Aminta and the sorrento area.

Room tip: It's all about the volcano if you can get that view. It's stunning

Just come back from a ten day stay at the the Grand Hotel Aminta with my family and best friends. This is a fabulous hotel and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to visit the beautiful Sorrento. We had a sea view double room, which was extremely clean and spacious. The views from this hotel are breathtaking and it has to be one of the best places to be in an evening when the daylight is fading. What makes this hotel so special are the staff. We felt like we had walked into a ready made family and they could not have done more for us. The walk into Sorrento is about 15mins but there is a free shuttle service every half an hour into Sorrento and back out to the hotel. If you get the last bus back to the hotel at 11.30pm beware you may have a disco on board!!!

Food was fantastic. Breakfast was lovely and we ate in the hotel in the evening a few times. Favourite dish was lobster and porcini risotto in a Parmesan cup. Divine!

Pool area was lovely, although if you are a sun worshipper, which I am, you will need to reserve your sun lounger the day before. This does cost 4 euros per day and means you don't have to rush to the pool!

Overall, one of the best holidays we've had. Beautiful country, fantastic hotel, excellent staff and gorgeous weather. What more could you want?
