“Lovely Hotel, Can't praise the staff enough.”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Had a wonderful week at the Aminta, fantastic position with lovely views from the terrace and from our balcony. Cannot praise the staff enough everybody was so helpful and very pleasant so that you immediately felt at ease and very comfortable. The food was excellent at all times, I liked that it was waiter service in the evenings. The outdoor bar on the terrace was very pleasant and there was good entertainment provided on a couple of nights. The bar staff were a delight. Our room was comfortable and kept very clean, there was noise from the road when the balcony door was open as it is quite a busy road but closing the door shut it out. Hubby and I enjoyed the walk into Sorrento via the path across the road from the hotel. I would never have believed after arriving there by coach, winding our way to the top of the hill that we could have walked down so easely, it seemed such a long way up, we were amazed It at what a short cut it was. It took about fifteen minutes to walk down to the outskirts of Sorrento but it was another ten minutes to get to the old part of town which is lovely. I would certainly recommend this hotel,it's classy but comfortable. My only gripe was that we were only there for a week we could have certainly stayed longer and hope to visit again one day.

On arrival we were told we had to pay an additional City tax on departure. Not a good start when our booking confirmation said "nothing else to pay". We booked an attic room which ended up being on the 5th floor. The lift stops at the fourth! The room had tea/coffee facilities in, and a sky light which gave us a view over the bay. Tiled floors throughout, complimentary toiletries, and restricted headroom which caught us out on more than one occassion. The hotel is a few km's out of the town and the hotel lay on a free shuttle which runs throughout the day and works well. You can walk into town down a very steep lane which takes about 10 mins if you are reasonably fit. We did walk back once, but it was a bit of a slog. It would be too dangerous to walk on the main road as there is no proper side walk. If you like being able to walk into town and back again in the evening then this hotel is not for you.
We ate in the restaurant on the first night. At 30 euros each for the set menu it was the most expensive meal we had all holiday. There was the chance to order from a la carte as well. The buffet breakfast is very good, with a wide selection of everything you would expect. The pool area is good and a poolside bar. Towels are available from reception if needed. The staff are very friendly and rooms are well cleaned every day. The entertainment in the evening we experienced was very good.

Having enjoyed a fantastic stay at this hotel in July 2011, we returned to Sorrento this September to get married and a large group of friends and family accompanied us. On our recommendation many of our group opted to stay at the Aminta and without exception our entire party had a wonderful experience.

The Aminta excels in the 3 of the most important areas: the hotel itself, the location and also the atmosphere.

The hotel is located on a hill which overlooks the town of Sorrento and when heading into Sorrento a shuttle bus or 10-15 minute walk is required. Any inconvenience is offset by the exceptional views over the Bay of Naples which can be viewed at most areas of the hotel. We particularly enjoyed the view from the outdoor bar/ pool area which provides a perfect back drop for an evening night cap (or two)!!

The reception areas are all done to a high standard and justify the 4 star rating. We also had the benefit of viewing several of the bedrooms, all of which were nicely done.

The bar and outside seating areas of the hotel are fantastic and in our case provided welcome shelter from the rain showers which plagued the first few days of our stay. The hotel owners must have been delighted by this adverse weather as it did little to quench the thirst of our party!!

The food available at the hotel was also more than satisfactory. The breakfast choice is extensive and ticks all of the continental breakfast boxes with a few extras such as eggs to order. The lunch time menu is largely the safe options i.e. pizza/ pasta however the food was of a good standard and reasonably priced.

The final word has to go to the hotel staff who provided a professional, efficient and genuinely friendly service to all of our party for our entire stay. Nothing was ever too much trouble and we were all made to feel very welcome as guests.

Overall the hotel manages to strike a great balance between high standards but without the stuffy formality which you often experience in similar hotels.

If you are looking for a nice hotel, in a great location with a relaxed atmosphere then you will not be disappointed by the Aminta.

I've titled this review with the words 'gay friendly' because as a gay couple it's not always easy to know on a package holiday if you can expect an uncomfortable time / attitude. But we have had the absoloute best holiday ever staying here, and I would come back in a heartbeat.

We travelled with Thompsons, and stayed for a week, which was never going to feel long enough once we'd seen the immaculately clean room, the great location and the amazing view of the whole harbour. We arrived - via Naples - and had a 2 hour drive on the coach in the dark through the winding coastal roads. It was hard to know where we were going, but it added to the surprise and 'Wow!' factor when we got there.

Dinner was a cold supper prepared for us in the dining room, where we met another couple - you're seated (if you're a couple) on a table for four, so you can find yourself sharing the table at breakfast and dinner, but we met the nicest couple - and spent time with them all week.

The room was clean, spacious and well decorated, with a balcony overlooking the pool area and bar. There are reviews on here about the noise from the road, but this woman is either insomniac or neurotic because we didn't notice it. The beds were big and comfy - crucial!!! - and the air conditioning was invaluable.

The pool area, terrace and bar are amazing - we never struggled for seats, and there are enough areas inside and out to match the amount of privacy, peace and sunshine or shade that you're after. The bar was well equipped, and the bar and lunch menu are formidable. We spent many evenings on the terrace sampling Tonino the bar-man's amazing cocktails - if you are reading this Tonino, you make the BEST chocolate and chilli martini in the world.

The location may well be challenging for some, but we found it easy - there is a very steep walkway on the other side of the road down the hillside to the very outskirts of town, but the coach was regular, and even though it didn't run during the lunch period, there are cabs - just don't get ripped off.

The staff were all friendly, and always smiling, and it all felt very natural and easy. We asked for an ironing board and had it delivered to our room in minutes. The maitre d' in the dining room ran non-stop, but always had everything under control. The chamber maids smiled and were friendly (and good with the towels!) and nothing seemed like too much trouble.

The food was very variable. Breakfast was pretty standard, but more than sufficient, and the coffee was good - no horrible watery stuff. Lunch is from a good bar menu, and dinner had a range of choices each night, with the basic or more adventurous dishes if you wished.

There are several things that we learnt along the way, that would have been good to know in advance. They didn't affect our trip negatively, but it would have helped to know them earlier.

1) The room balcony door has a black out screen that isn't immediately obvious. If you want a lie in, or to keep the room cooler, you will need it.

2) The sun loungers around the pool get snapped up fast, as there aren't enough for everyone. You can reserve these at the front desk from 1pm each day, but need to get in fast. If you reserve one, you can still spend the morning shopping in town, but still have it waiting when you return at lunch time, as they're yours for the day

3) You run a tab from the minute you arrive, so every drink, snack or additional item gets signed off by you and handed in to reception by the staff. You can ask for a total of where you are up to at the front desk at any time you like if you want to know how much cash you have to stump up at the end of your stay

4) The track to town - Is across the road from the hotel entry below the road, with no signage. It is steep and uneven, and used by all motorcycle and scooter riders, both up and down - so you need to be constantly aware that they move quickly, and are sometimes driven recklessly and overloaded. There are some of the best views of the harbour from here, and it comes out at the nearest 'corner shop' that sells STAMPS for postcards.

5) The coach - get to the coach point leaving the hotel early, as if it can get completely full. There is a tip jar for the driver - I wouldn't bother. The man is unresponsive and looks permanently miserable - why am I tipping someone whose fee is paid by my staying cost who doesn't do anything more than drive a coach - he didn't even smile. It is worth noting that when the bus arrives at the point in Sorrento, Italian guests DO NOT queue - they just barge straight on to get a seat - even if you were waiting 15 minutes before they even turned up.

6) Dessert - the gelati is fabulous, varied and always available - but you CAN ask for fruit. They just don't tend to put very much out - presumably to stop guests pocketing 40 pieces each to stash in their rooms

If I had one gripe, it wouldn't be the hotel or it's staff - it would be the Thomson reps. On arrival we found our bus no problem, but in the dark had no idea where we were getting off, and were told that we would be stopping at the OTHER hotel first, so when we pulled in to ours, we didn't budge until another passenger screamed that we were there.
You are invited to make your way to a restaurant in town - with insufficient maps or details of HOW to find it - to meet the reps who will 'introduce Sorrento and give a walking tour of the town'.
It wasn't quite like that. The restaurant was lovely, and the owner spoke very well for ten minutes about the history of the place. Then she handed over to the 2 reps, who were basically like 2 over excited LOUD sorority girls with a hyperactive disorder, who proceeded to shriek about their grandparents, their nicknames ('You can call me 'T**s' or 'Tinkerbell'...) and talk a terrible sales pitch about the attractions in the area. At the end you had 60 people with questions for TWO people - insane. Our only question was whether we needed an international licence to rent a car - we never got an answer. You could get more info - and keep an hour of your life - by reading guidebook. We wandered the town ourselves and skipped the tour - which was dragged past us as we ate lunch at a roadside cafe. We also wouldn't recommend the restaurant the pitch is held in for dinner - better food and service is available at thousands of other small cafes across the town, and other guests we talked to were equally unimpressed.
The reps dropped in to the hotel at times, but we had a better time without their help.

It was a fabulous holiday, but this was down to the staff and our fellow guests. No-one batted an eyelid that i was with my boyfriend, which was great. Nearly all the guests were Brits and they were all as thrilled with the place as we were. It was way beyond our expectations, and i would urge anyone reading some of the less positive views to research the area themselves in advance, and take into account the location and culture before whining about it in a review!!!

(P.S Pompeii is amazing, but cheaper and easier to get the train yourself and spend a day wandering at your own pace than be rushed through in 2 hours on a half day visit. Get the ferry from the harbour via Positano to Amalfi for 16 Euros return and see the cathedral and crypt, plus great views of the coast-line)

Best wishes to all the staff at the Aminta, and thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

I had such an amazing time yet again at the Grand Hotel Aminta. The warm and friendly staff are lovely and the reception staff are very helpful!
The food was delicious with 3 courses every evening and the silver domes covering the food to surprise you is always a lovely touch. I loved the neopolition nights and the dancing. I thought is was so lovely how on the special bank holiday they did puddings outside- there were hundreds of tiny puddings to take! Heaven!
The pool is perfect to just slip into when the you get too hot and it's a great size.
The rooms are spot less and the beds are very comfortable. I would say the air conditioning does get abit cold in the night though!
The shuttle bus is great to pop down and up into sorrento however at night it is a bit of a pain going down to sorrento about 8.pm and having to come up at 11.30pm because there isn't any more shuttle buses till then.
It is in a perfect location were it isn't so stuffy and crowded with people.
The views are Incredible of Mount Versuivius, Naples, the whole of sorrento below and Capri. We took plenty of photos!
The excursions are wonderful! We went to Pompeii, Mount Versuivius, Herculaneum, the blue cruise boat to Amalfi, Positano and a swim stop on Capri, private 12 seater cruise to Capri and jumped of the boat into caves and the grottos. They were all lovely.
The weather was 35-37 degrees everyday and it was lovely!
I will definitely be coming back to this lovely hotel for the third time!

Important to understand that the vast majority of people staying are package holiday makers that are used to ur average three star. Nothing wrong with that, but just so u understand the high ratings. Wouldn't recommend booking this hotel for 'special' occasions. No frills easy jet style. Friendly, English, family orientated and not imposing.

Good= service was wonderful throughout our stay nothing too much trouble. Lovely pool area was fab. Great views.
Average= food. Fine. Large portions. English centric. Lots of English tompson holiday makers so not authentic, but homely.
Bad= hotel itself was holiday inn style, zero frills and those nasty white plastic chairs everywhere. Not a four star. If it were cheaper I'd be less critical but it's not cheap. Location isn't great. Not near beach, transport or centre. An hourly free shuttle into centre is a must but doesn't do lunchtime or ten pm, or after eleven. So restrictive. Budget 55euros to and from the centre! Adult pool is deep throughout which is weird and not therefore that relaxing, gotta sink or swim!

Not awful, but I wouldn't stay again.
