“Noisy, room so small you couldn't swing a cat in it”
Reviewed June 2, 2011

Good location, clean hotel but i've never seen a 'hotel' room so small in all my life. In some respects it felt more like a hostel - especially when a group of American students seemed to be on hall patrol till 2 in the morning. Breakfast was ok, although when i asked the waitress for some glasses she looked at me as if i'd driven a stake through her heart - the atmosphere in the breakfast area was somber to say the least and i could not find a clean table as the waitress was moving so slowly as to clear one per hour - maybe the italian service industry could do with some Polish charm and smiles. The aircon gave up the ghost on the final night - so with the cramped room and the heat i felt as though i was being buried alive.

I'm so glad that I found out about this hotel on Trip Advisor when another hotel we had booked in Sorrento didn't respond to my reservation confirmation. It's not a fancy place but you get good value for what you pay. The room was clean and spacious, the bathroom was big and we had a balcony overlooking a pretty courtyard with lemon trees. A decent breakfast is included (just make sure to get there earlier since they don't really replenish). It's located centrally so it was about a 5 minute walk to the airport bus that brings you here from Naples and the Circumvesuvia train (which we used to go to Pompeii). It's also a 5-min walk to the harbor where you can catch the ferry to Capri and other towns on the Amalfi Coast. There are many restaurants close by as well. We especially appreciated the 24-hr front desk service which is not always available at other B&Bs in the area since we had a very early morning check-out.

3 things that prevented from giving this place a 5 was that when we arrived, our air-conditioning didn't work and they said they would send someone to fix it but never did. It worked out fine for us since the weather was still cool on our trip and we could open the balcony doors to cool the room down. We had a room right across from the elevator and you can hear all the foot traffic that takes place, especially in the mornings when the cleaning service occurs. We didn't hear any noise from outside, just the halls. If possible, try to get a room away from the elevator. Lastly, the free WiFi was pretty spotty from our room, but apparently they have a computer down by reception that you can use.

This hotel is a pleasant place to stay, but the room and breakfast were good rather than great. The atmosphere lacks intimacy, it feels a little like you are a number rather than a guest. That said, it has an excellent location for walking around the old town, and is also close to the main square and the main shopping streets. Also it is very quiet, especially considering it's central location. All considered, we woould use this hotel again.

I absolutely loved this hotel, it's so clean, well decorated, and of course in the heart of Sorrento, the rooms are big and comfortable and from my window I could see the narrow streets of Sorrento. Lovely place, I recommend it.

After traveling around Italy for 2 months, and staying in 27 hotels and bed and breakfasts, I can safely say that Hotel Astoria was the best value I found. The rooms are squeaky clean and cheery (the yellow looks better in real life than on the website), and the tiling in the bathrooms is adorable. The showers are spacious and the sinks have plenty of counter space (for Europe and at this price). My room was completely quiet and the bed was comfortable. The manager Michele was particularly nice and helpful. The breakfast was pretty standard, but with plenty of options. The location is very central. Though I vehemently recommend against staying in Sorrento as a "base" for visiting the Amalfi coast, Capri, or Naples, it is a cute town and only a short train-ride away from Pompei, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius. If you do stay in Sorrento, I highly recommend this hotel!

I stayed here as part of a package holiday with TopFlight. The best thing about this hotel is the location. If you are staying here you are in the centre of Sorrento and within walking distance of great restaurants, the beach and the marina. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and they nearly all speak English. The hotel is basic but it's very well maintained and I don't think I saw a spec of dirt while I was there. I think a 5 star hotel would of been wasted on us for this trip because Sorrento is so beautiful that you will spend very little time in the hotel anyway.

The main issue with this hotel is the noise. It's in the centre of the town so there's a lot of people walking past the hotel late at night. Also there's a very nice restaurant right outside the door of the hotel. It's very good and does a roaring trade but it's usually 12.30am before it closes its doors. Also as other posters mentioned there's a lot of people up and about going on trips early each morning so these do tend to make noise inside the hotel. The tiled floors probably carry the sound more than say carpet floors would.

Aside from that it's a great hotel and I would recommend it to a friend.

When we stepped into our room we were impressed. It was modern, sunny, and spotless. The bed was nice, and the view was out onto a nice terrace. We even had a little patio.

But what would have been a 5 rating was not to be. The next morning at around 6:30am the bus tour people started leaving the place. Imagine around 100 elephants in high heals crashing down the stairs, dragging rolling baggage behind them on tiled floors and down staircases, all while screaming at each other to hurry up. This would go on for 2-3 hours each morning. After 4 nights of interrupted sleep I was delighted to get out of that place.

Admittedly, we were unlucky in that we had been put in a room on the first floor close to the stairwell, so maybe it is worthwhile requesting a room on an upper floor away for the main traffic artery. But overall this is a very promising hotel than needs to rectify its noise issue.

As a final note, the service wasn't great. When we arrived, our confirmation had gone missing, which may explain why we got such a noisy room.
