“Nice Hotel with friendly staff but problems in the kitchen”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2006

Visited the hotel at the beginning of August and spent two weeks. Asked for and got room the room we wanted, on the corner with big balcony and stunning views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Had a water leak in the entrance to the room which took several days to get fixed.
Disappointing that the menu was repeated in the second week, though after complaining to our tour operator it was changed.
Most disappointing issue was the Gala Buffet in the second week when all of the main courses ran out at 8.20 pm and despite not having a proper meal that evening all we were offered in compensation was a bottle of Asti Spumante (about 1 euro in Italy)
Internet did not work after the first couple of days for the whole fortnight.
However the staff were charming and polite and keen to please.
In view of our experience doubt we would ever return.

Good value four star, though don't skimp: get the sea view !

Fantastic location overlooking Vesuvius. A tiny bit out of town (10 min walk) which is good as Sorrento can get very busy. Very quiet if you have the sea view, but that rooms overlooking the road will be quite noisy thanks to the Vespas!

Excellent buffet breaskfast: one of the best I have seen. Chefs are excellent. Maids and reception staff also excellent.

Superior sea view rooms very nicely done: lovely tiles floor and spotlessly clean. Nice furniture and loads of wardrobe and case space etc.

You don't want rooms sea front room numbers starting 40x as they are beneath the restaurant and will be noisy. Rooms above restaurant (505 to 510?) are quiet, though and have lovely sea view.

The pool is unheated and is freezing! Garden view over the sea is astonishing, though the garden has scrappy moss rather than grass which is a bit disappointing.

Big disappointment was their tight fisted approach to use of sun loungers and their private beach deck. Though it's impressive that you reach the deck via a left from all room floors (!) they insist on charging you 5EUR per sun lounger per day even though you're paying upto 280EUR for your room! Also, you cannot take your own drink (e.g. bottled water) onto the beach deck or into the gardens, and must by their own 3EUR water. Disgraceful greed, and there's no need.

Would certainly visit again, all said.

My family occupied three rooms this past September.
The view from the room balcony is spectacular. Rooms are well appointed and large.

The full breakfast is in great variety and of excellent quality.

The entire staff is very courteuos and helpful and knowledgeable.

The gardens and pool area are complete with beautiful flowers and trees.
A short walk of 10 minutes takes you directly to the center of town, and yet the location of the hotel is quite secluded.

This is a vacation hotel. I reccommend the Ambasciatori without reservation.

Our room was right on the Bay of Naples with a lovely terrace. The view is spectacular !!!!! The hotel lobby, patio with pool, and gardens were beautiful. The hotel staff were very helpful. The only problem we had occured when we got there and they had advertised 3 different types of menu options, but when we got there the only one we could have was the prix fix which was 100 Euros for two. This would have been ok, but we had been travelling for 24 hrs from the USA, and just wanted a plate of spaghetti, which we could have had from the ala caret menu. Otherwise everything was sensational.

Our recent trip to the Hotel Ambasciatori (29/ 9-6/10) can only be described as a dream. The hotels sumptuous ,refined, & `grand villa ` like style only added to what is a fantastic hotel .
The ambience & charm together with unequalled views over Versuvius & the bay of Naples are unparelled. The food was different , interesting & cannot be faulted ( despite what other reviews have said about this ). The staff were very, very friendly, efficient , worked extremely hard but always had time for a chat.
We have travelled & stayed in numerous hotels in Italy ( we were married in Ravello in 2001) but this hotel far exceeded any expectations we had of it.
Need I say more -the proof of the pudding is in the eating & we have booked again to return next year.
By the way -for anyone who has a disability the hotel & the resort are superb. My husband is registered Blind & also has M.S so has to resort to a wheelchair sometimes. The access to the hotel is flat (has a ramp) & there only a few steps within the hotel & the garden ( even the pool is stepped) & there is a lift down to the bathing platform . Sorrento itself has dropped kerbs & has smooth flat cobbles for easy access.
All in all we cannot fault this hotel & the majority of other guests who were resident on half board also felt the same way- two of the guests had returned for a second visit this year & there were 2 couples on their honeymoon.

  • Liked — the whole package -cannot be faulted
  • Disliked — nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — take insect bite cream & bubble bath& try having a bottle of Prosecco before dinner overlooking the bay- fantastic

My wife and I stayed here for two weeks at the beginning of September 2006. We paid extra for a full sea view room and were not disappointed - it's sea views are in our opinion the outstanding feature of the hotel. We were staying on a B&B only basis, which allowed us to sample the many fantastic restaurants Sorrento has to offer (Caruso's - for a special occasion, Basillica and Delfino - the last being in Marina Grande are worthy of particular mention). We did look at the daily menu for the hotel restaurant, but were never particularly inspired. (For information the price is €40 per person). The hotel is abount a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre, and a bit closer to the railway station. There is a bus stop outside and to the left if you don't fancy the walk. As mentioned in a recent review the football ground is just opposite the hotel, and if Sorrento are at home I would recommend a visit. We would also highly recommend the little bar next to the football ground (out of the hotel and right for about 25 yards) for beer wine and light lunches - at prices well below the hotel - you can take away beers, water, coke etc.
We found the price of drinks in the hotel to be expensive - more what you would expect to pay in a resort hotel than a town hotel. However, the hotel laundry was surprisingly good value.
The staff generally seemed to be a bit aloof, though the housekeeping ladies were unfailingly cheerful.
The hotel pool is fairly small, and a sunbed will cost you €5. The deckchairs are good though. The bathing platform is the best place for a swim, however the sea isn't overly warm. Instant immersion is the only way to go.
Breakfast is run on a fairly typical continental buffet system, though the egg chef is very good. The morning coffee is an acquired taste however.
All in all we were very happy with our choice - though would regard the sea view as essential, otherwise there are plenty of other choices.
Our only problem during our stay was a leak that occurred on our last day during some violent storms. Closer inspection of the paintwork suggested that this was a recurring problem, though not one that would prevent our return to the same room type and on the same meal basis.

  • Disliked — Morning coffee
  • Tips/Secrets — Go for a sea view, try Sorrento's restaurants

This was our third visit to the Ambasciatori which in in itself tells you something (it is rare for us to go back to a hotel), the last being some eight years ago. We stayed there for a week at the beginning of September. Previously, the hotel made you feel you were getting genuine old world value. It is still excellent but there is more of a sense of it being a commercial operation. There was at least one wedding (sometimes more) most days, which when the weather turned one night meant a 20 minute wait before being seated in the restaurant. The reception staff were competent but not as friendly as I remembered. The plus for this hotel is definitely the location and the food in the main restaurant. We had a pizza from the pool-side bar that was very disappointing but the omelette for breakfast is a work of art. Would I go again, yes, in a few years but it had slipped back a little from its previous high. Sorrento itself is ideal for touring, Capri, Naples, Herculaneum & Pompeii are very easy to get to. Further afield Paestum is worth a visit.
