“Sophia Loren-esque! Gracefully Ageing & Still Beautiful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is not the W or Fours Seasons,or even a Sofitel and nor does it pretend to be. This is an Old- World Style hotel, that some might think needs updating (perhaps) but I would take it's 20 foot ceilings and over-the-top murals and baroque furniture, complimented by over-sized rooms with loads of furniture ( that has a few nicks and needs oiling) than slick and new, any day- at least in this part of the world!
It was pouring with rain the day we arrived, but our rooms (122-123) were stunning, just off the lobby with massive amounts of space, two marble bathrooms, plenty of room for our clothes, luggage and purchases and space to take in the superb views of the Bay of Naples.
At first I was not sure, as the welcome was not exactly as welcoming as it had been at our previous hotel, but Rosa got warmed up and then so did we!
The concierge staff are efficient and old school.
Suggestions of Il Bucco restaurant- absolutely stunning - see separate Trip Advisor review-
Tasso good for families (sep review) and suggested taxi services, BUT found the guide they gave us for Pompei, very average- (it was £250 Euros cash in hand to the hotel for 2hrs15 minutes and the guide did not seem to realise that we were already well versed in the history of the area and wanted a bit more than the standard blurb... see sep. review for guides in Venice!
The restaurant for the hotel was a lovely surprise- the food was well above average and the service was compromised only by the fact that they had a very large group in that took most of their attention, but found that this was compensated by a maitre'd who understood this and took care of our needs. Would recommend, especially as it was raining cats and dogs, but bet it would be stunning on a nice day with the view!
Breakfast was good and the staff were loads of fun.
take time to explore all the nooks and crannies... lots to enjoy and we would definitely stay again and recommend.
SPA
BEST MASSAGE and Facial I've had in months! ASk for the older gals! Experience pays!

Room Tip: ground floor suites are stunning in terms of scope, vista and size

This hotel is in an excellent location with beautiful grounds and a very attentive staff. They arranged for car service from the Naples train station, and the concierge was extremely helpful, especially for restaurant recommendations. A delicious and varied breakfast buffet was included, which we enjoyed every morning. Views are spectacular. Many excellent restaurants, shops, and even a grocery are just outside the door. The restaurant on site is good, but not my favorite. We scheduled a 90 minute honeymoon couples massage, which turned out to be 45 minutes, followed by a whirlpool tub and tea. At a cost of 250 euro, I would have preferred an actual 90 minute massage. Overall, though, this hotel is wonderful, primarily because of the perfect location and lovely staff. We wouldn't think of staying anywhere else when we return to Sorrento.

Room Tip: Well worth it to upgrade to a water view vs garden view. Every evening we spent time on our balcony...

This was my first visit to Sorrento. I stayed at the Hotel on a BB basis, for 4 nights, with work colleagues, attending a conference in June. Fantastic location on the main village square, perfect for exploring Sorrento and further afield on foot. Very peaceful, hidden in well established and impressive grounds. On arrival we had tea on the terrace, looking over the Bay of Naples. This is a grand old hotel which has been beautifully maintained and refurbished in a sympathetic manner. It is crammed with old world charm and has all the facilities one would expect in a 5 star hotel. The room was superb, with a large sitting area, separate from the bedroom and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was heavenly! The breakfast options were excellent. The pianist and the views made this a memorable experience. I found all the staff to be extremely polite, helpful and courteous. One of the night staff even walked me to the restaurant to meet colleagues. Perhaps it helped that I was able to speak some Italian. My only disappointment was spending so little time here! I would really recommend this as a romantic holiday destination.

We ended our Honeymoon in Sorrento. I have travelled throughout Italy many times but my husband had not. This was his first time in Sorrento and what an incredible way to end our trip.We took the ferry from Ischia straight to Sorrento. Sitting atop a 800m cliff was the hotel right above the pier. There is a private elevator that takes you up to the lobby which is breathtaking. Marble floors, frescos, and panoramic views of Vesuvius, Capri and the Bay of Naples literally takes your breath away.

We continued to be blown away by our room. We were facing the sea with a terrace that overlooked what seemed like the entire Amalfi Coast. We had champagne and strawberries waiting for us, and the bathroom was larger than my NYC apartment. The room was especially nice as it featured blackout electronic shades making for the most comfortable night's sleep.

As Americans we were very impressed with the gym here. It was by far the nicest of gyms, even compared to some of the 5 star spas that were known for their gyms. Following an incredible workout, we would feast at the breakfast in the grand room that looked like it belonged in a museum. The breakfasts were spectacular. We both could not get over the attention to detail by the staff at all times. In particular, the concierge helped arrange for us to have mopeds to take our own tour along the amalfi coast and then be able to detour as we wanted to explore little cliffs and coves. Incredibly romantic, but driving a moped on the Amalfi coast is not for the faint of heart!

We would spend the days lounging at the pool when it would get super hot. We felt like we were at a very posh spot somewhere. The pool scene is really nice and loungy, very upscale. At night, it is like a little piece of the W Hotel by the pool but with an entirely different twist because the W Hotel has nothing on this! A 2 minute walk to the downtown shops and restaurants, the staff at the hotel will make sure every need is taken care of. I couldn't go on more about this hotel. In particular, the hotel manager, Nicolino Gregio was my favorite part of the stay. He was the cherry on our cake and really personalized our stay. I cannot thank him enough.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the bay side

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in October for several nights. The grounds of the hotel are spectacular and the location is the best in Sorrento. The entrance to the hotel opens right into the town square. The hotel itself was beautiful. The common areas were clean and so was our room. Everything about the hotel was truly 5 star...except the service. Every time we dealt with someone who worked for the hotel they acted as if they were doing us an unusual favour by speaking with us. When we checked in the woman helping us didn't greet us and barely looked up when checking us in. When I asked the concierges for assistance throughout our stay, they offered minimal advice and behaved as though they were too busy to care about where we were going for dinner, or where we were touring during the day. It was all very strange. I would still recommend this hotel because of the location and because of the actual property/rooms, but be warned about the service.

This was our first stay in sorrento, ( we stayed 6 days), and I loved this hotel. In fact, I can not think of anything about the hotel, grounds or location that I did not like.
There were plenty of good to great restaurants, in any price range, within a few minutes walk in any direction.
The bus and train terminal are accessible on foot. One day we took the bus to positano. (Btw, it is a long walk down to the city, and probably is not bad on a cool day. We did it in 85 degree heat. Phew!) Anyway, what a ride! Certainly not for anyone with vertigo or the faint hearted. We totally enjoyed the experience, and that was what it was. We also took the boat ride around Capri, stopping at the different grottos....Another thing not to miss. We even took the little train which is right outside the hotel and takes you around sorrento.
We took the ferry to Capri and spent the day, ditto amalfi, and the train the Herculean and Pompeii. Bottom line is that this hotel in a perfect area to use as a base to get to a lot of. Different areas.
One last comment is,that I loved "old world" character of the common rooms, both inside and outside of the hotel. I felt that if i just wanted to spend the day reading in a comfy chair, then I would not feel guilty at all.
The one thing that I did not expect was how warm the weather was at the end of October. I would have packed some different items, even a bathing suit.

We had seen this hotel when visiting Sorrento during a cruise and had thought that it would be a great place to stay. It exudes exclusivity with a fantastic location in the middle of the town but down a long garden drive so well away from the hurly-burly. We had a classic sea view room which was extremely well appointed, with a large balcony and a superb view. We were on HB and the food was excellent although some might find some of the dishes a bit too adventurous. Staff extremely efficient and charming and we struggle to find anything to complain about - except that the outdoor pool water was too cold for comfort despite the good weather and the piano in the breakfast restaurant needs tuning! This is a hotel we very much hope we will stay at again.
