“Best location in Sorrento”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Villa la Contessina is just an incredible place to stay. I have never seen anything better in Sorrento!
The Villa has a wonderful location (3 minutes walk from Sorrento main square), and at the same time is in a very quite place, and very close to the sea. There is a beautiful garden, which is very unusual similar places in Sorrento, and the staff is very friendly and extremely kind.
Now I know why everyone dreams to come back to this place, and everyone wishes to stay longer! :-)

Villa La Contessina was such a find! Great location, room and value-for-money. A very hospitable host in Anastasia, we wish we could stay forever!

Location

Just a minute’s walk to Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s main square and hive of activity. Just opposite the villa is a tourist info desk.

Just steps from the villa are a few restaurants and pizzerias. A minute’s walk to villa comunale for a great view of the sunset and where you can take the lift down to one of the marinas. A longer 10 min walk to Marina Grande for the restaurants there. But ferries to Capri or Positano depart from a different marina, which is a short walk down slope and stairs from the villa. Also a minute’s walk to the pedestrianized shopping streets!

About 7 minute’s walk on flat ground to the train and bus station.

My only gripe is there’s a road outside the villa with vehicles going up and down from the port, so there is an occasional honk. But nothing too bothersome in view of the great location. There is a church nearby and you’ll hear the bells ring either 30 or 40 times (I lost count) at 7.15am, but it’s not loud.

Villa

The villa has a lovely garden with loungers and a hammock. The pictures you see online are exactly what you get. There are also some orange and lemon trees on the property, a reminder that you’re in Sorrento.

We only had a room and didn’t have access to the main living room or kitchen, but it definitely looked very charming and homely.

Room

We took one of the rooms with a terrace on the second floor (the room is called Capri). It has a pretty big terrace by my standards, with a couple of arm chairs. Some view of the sea and sunset. It is amazing to wake up to birds chirping every morning.

There is a lift up to the second floor and Anastasia helped us bring our luggage up via the lift.

The room itself is comfortable, with a bed decently sized for 2. The room is not big, but comfortable enough for 2 with large suitcases to move around. There is a small breakfast table and a couple of chairs too. Anastasia had prepared some stuff for us to get started, with milk and juice in the fridge, and water, bread and some snacks on the breakfast table.

In-room safe, good wi-fi and international news channels, great to catch up on what’s happening around the world.

Bathroom has a shower, WC and bidet. There are thoughtful touches with a pouch containing lip balm, sachets of shampoo and body wash.

Because we didn’t need the rooms to be serviced daily, we got a discount.

Anastasia is a very hospitable host. She speaks good English especially considering it is not her first language. She kindly picked us up from the train station on the evening that we arrived. Upon arrival at the villa, she helped orientate us and had a map with good restaurants and sights marked out by her. We loved her suggestions on restaurants! And oh, there were welcome shots of limoncello too.

We stayed four nights at Contessina and would not hesitate to return again. We had earlier booked to move to Villa Adriana for better sea views, and were sad to leave Contessina.

If you planning on traveling in Italy to a smaller town (you've done Rome, Florence, etc. and want something different), then Sorrento is the place to go and Villa La Contessina is the place to stay. I had an incredible experience there, and I can't wait for the opportunity to go back. I must note that I traveled with a group, and we had free range of the entire villa. We enjoyed meals together on the patio and in the kitchen, but we were also able to prepare coffee and snacks for ourselves any time of day. That said, the villa is gorgeous, immaculately clean, and luxuriously decorated in a style that I imagine is common in the area. I felt as though I was staying in someone's impeccably decorated home. The yard is spacious and beautiful, and there is a huge outdoor eating area. The villa itself is set off from the road, so there is little noise. But it is also but a few steps from one of the main squares in Sorrento, close to shopping, restaurants, bars, gelato, etc. On the second level, there is a view of the Bay of Naples as well. It's also close to the ferry dock where you can take boats to Capri, Positano, etc., although it does involve walking down steps cut into a hill. There is a washer and dryer, which proved very convenient. Anastasia and her mother were wonderful hosts, and even welcomed us with a full spread of delicious Italian food.

I've been to many towns and cities in Europe, and several places in Italy, staying in everything from hostels to four-star hotels and apartments. Nothing can beat this experience for me. Sorrento is an incredible small town with enough to keep you busy for 4 days or a week and Villa La Contessina is the best place I have ever stayed in Europe. I would go back in a heartbeat and am counting the days until I can.

We had an excellent holiday at Villa Contessina. The villa and garden are delightful - they are a hidden and spacious oasis in the middle of an otherwise busy Sorrento. The villa was spotless and had everything we needed, and the location is great - lots of restaurants with trains and ferries only a few minutes' walk away (we had a car for half of our stay but you could manage happily without).

Anastasia and her mother were perfect hosts, and the fantastic food left for our lunch on arrival was an unexpected delight!

We would wholeheartedly recommend the villa, and hope to return ourselves before too long.

What can I say, I refrained to write this for a couple of weeks. Wanted to take an objective perspective. Probably it will be a good option for big families or groups, especially of senior people I assume, people that pay to stay inside the villa, sunbathing in the terrace rather than exploring around. Well it didn't work for me. I traveled by myself and missed having contact with other people and being able to ask questions, and of course since I was renting a room I didn't have access to the garden at all. Will try to be fair: the room was ok, with all amenities and nicely decorated. The insulation is not good, you need to turn on the heater in the room. The bathroom is not covered by the central A/C but has a portable heater (much needed, believe me!!). I arrived into Italy and it was very early for the villa specific check-in hours, decided to go to Pompeii (it really worth the visit!) to make some time until the check-in time. Arrived in Sorrento at 5ish, stop by the supermarket, follow a map and walked, no problem finding the street at the end of the main street and just on the right of the restaurant that is in the main square. Started looking for the Villa number.. could't find it in the block, had to asked many people without success, asked the police and they told me that the block continued after the small square (even if there was no logic in the house numbers). Ok, the street continued on the other side of the square, where there is a couple of pizzerias in a corner. The entrance is on your left. Entered the gate, at first couldn't find the number but I was lucky that someone was walking to the cars parked and indicated to me the small garden door that had a sign with the name of the Villa. Rang the bell several times, nothing. I was very upset, continued ringing the bell until I realized that nobody was there (though I was within the 'check-in hours'). Finally I had to give it up and used my mobile for a very expensive international phone call, only the second call was answered. The lady indicated that she was coming in 10 min. When she arrived she excused herself telling that she sent me many emails asking my arrival time. It was strange since I checked my email that day very early in the morning and there was nothing. Nevertheless told her that I didn't have access to my email during that day. of course the first thing I did when gained access to my email was to check for her emails: None received. Internet in the room: I couldn't access to it, probably b/c I had my kindle with me. Satellite TV the first day? None. send her an sms and she agreed to come the following day after to solve the matter. I left for capri but got an sms from her letting me know that the issues were solved. second day: access to internet? no , access to satellite? yes, but limited (seems that they have the standard packet (few channels and most of them translated into italian). i have to recognize that she was responsive an even gave me a ride to the train station the last day. Something else that I didn't like was that she offered to discount 10E from the second night if the room was not serviced. Since I travel by myself, it sounded good to save 10E instead of paying them to have someone making the bed. funny thing is that when checking out there was no means to pay with credit car (despite of the fact that the ads indicated acceptance of Creitcards). Therefore I ended paying the fee that they may have incurred for the bottle water an ha to do the bed myself. To make a long story short, would I ever stay in Villas again? No, Prefer to go to a so-so hotel..

Dear Roxana, I'm sorry that you're complaining about only on tripadvisor. Usually when there is any problem clients come to me and I try to do everything possible to fix it. If it was cold in the bathroom, you could have warned me, because I would have done so by giving you an additional heater. Not all humans have the same body temperature, and since no one had ever complained to remedy I have never done otherwise. I always thought that was enough warmer. In reference to the internet I told you that there was a problem with the phone line and did not depend on me, but by the telephone company. As far as the tv has many channels, but you have to apply for research. As for cleaning, because the price would be the same, I gave you a chance to save ten euro giving the cleaning of the room, you could very well reject the offer, for me it changed nothing and it nor you would have paid in more or less.
As for my e-mail, which you say you did not receive, you're wrong, because I sent the e-mail via the portal Venus, who I contacted and I hope you will be able to let me have my e-mail, why publish it on tripadvisor. I'm sorry you think I tell lies, it is not my interest does not give good service. It should not happen, but sometimes it can happen that something will go for the best, but it would be enough to point this out in order to fix it. Perfection is not of human beings, and sometimes it can happen that something can not work, it also happens at home, it is important to point out and remedy the problem. In any case, the criticism is always constructive in order to improve.
Kind regards
Anastasia

Me and my wife stayed in Villa La Contenssina during 10 days in the mid of March 2013. And it was wonderfull time for us. We have a room with balcony with view of Naples gulf (very pictoresque). The yard of the villa has very nice garden. The villa is in the historical center of Sorrento, not far from the one of oldest Sorrento monastery and not far from railway station and sea pier (very convenient for trips on Amalfy beach). The room's furniture is very nice with the lot of dressers and boxes. For me was bery important free internet access. It was work well. The owner of villa Anastasia is charming lady who was responsived to our desires. My recommendation is to try of Dolce Vita in this Villa!

I can't believe how long it's taken me to write this! My family and I (eight of us in all) stayed at Villa La Contessina over Christmas this year (2012). The location in Sorrento could not have been more perfect. It was centrally located in town and allowed us to walk to all of the historic and shopping areas. It was also a perfect location to get to the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples and Pompei for day trips. The house was absolutely beautiful and the four bedrooms with individual bathrooms was perfect for two couples and our children. The kitchen was very well equipped and allowed us to cook our meals several nights during our stay when we weren't eating out at the wonderful local restaurants. The town itself was perfect for a laid back yet fun vacation during the holidays. We even felt comfortable enough for our teenage children to venture out on their own during the evenings! Contrary to locations in the US, we had multiple choices for dinner and lunch even on Christmas eve and day. I would love to come back when the weather is warm and enjoy the beautiful beaches in this part of Italy. As it was, even in December the weather was very nice and we were able to sit on the beautiful veranda and eat oranges picked from the garden for breakfast. Now for the best part.....Anastasia and her mother were incredible. Anastasia speaks English very well and helped us navigate our way from the US to Rome and then to the Villa. She sent us information ahead of time about where to eat and locations to visit to help plan our trip. When we arrived, after a very long plane trip and an exhausting drive from Rome (holiday traffic), she and her mother were at the Villa with an Italian buffet and a much needed chilled Limoncello. Anastasia's mother had also decorated the house for Christmas and made us feel right at home. I hated to leave and I can't wait to go back. Thank you, thank you Anastasia! I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Villa La Contessina again.
