Having heard about Pompeii since grade school my husband and I were anxious to see it. So this trip to Rome we arranged for a private tour. The tour included our transportation (private van) from Rome, private tour of Pompeii and a couple of hours on the Amalfi coast.

So where to start...the tour was beyond our expectations. Ilaria, our guide is an Archeologist. She tells the story of tagging along with her teacher mother on class trips since she was only 5. You could not find someone that knows Pompeii as well. Her passion makes things come alive. Despite the fact that it was cold and rainy the time flew by. We watched other groups come go from a building in less than half the time we spent there. You must understand that Pompeii is such a unique sight and it is a look at how everyday people lived over 2000 years ago. She explained things like "these holes in the walls are believed to be from looters that had not yet died. They would have been walking on rubble". The tour was just filled with little insights like that. We loved it.

The private transportation was not without a glitch. Our first driver's van had problems and we had to get a second driver. When all was said and done we lost less than a half hour. I always believe it is how an organization handles a problem that is the true test. And this was handled well.

After Pompeii we went to the Amalfi coast and had lunch in a family run restaurant with a beautiful view. It would have been stunning on a sunny day and was quite lovely, even with rain and clouds. Elel, our driver, took us into Positano where we had a chance to wander the town a bit.

Cost...a lot. We paid an 80 euro deposit prior to leaving the US. We paid our guide 80 euros and the driver 500 euros. All payments had to be in cash or traveler's checks. We also had to pay for our lunch and admission to Pompeii (11 euros each). We were very happy to pay that and felt that we got our money's worth.

Got back to Rome after about 12 hours. Great trip, would recommend to anyone.

A: Why would I go to anyone else....?!
We were a party of 21 of a variety of Nationalities come together for a long weekend. So I was a little apprehensive of how it would turn out.
On reflection, there was nothing of concern as we were in such capable hands.
Our first day we had a morning tour of Naples.
Our Tour Guide was Ludovica who was a native of Naples - her knowledge was outstanding, she had a nice easy going manner with a nice sense of humour...We even went to the church where her parents were married which was rather charming. As a result of her compentance and easy going nature our half day passed all too quickly, she suggested for the afternoon some very nice off the beaten track places to see which contrasted very well with the hustle and bustle of the old city and the onset of rain did little to dampen our enjoyment.
Salerno Tours organised an evening at a restaurant in the old town which was hugely enjoyable [ although maybe was positively riotious towards the end : ) with the large/vast intake of local wine ] .
On Sunday we went to Pompeii - we decided to go early before the crowds build up being a Sunday on Slaerno's advice and were there not long after the gates the gates opened. We organised the train ourselves under her instruction of the day before - which was very simple - and met Ludovica on the platform on arrival [ and yes she had heard a report of the previous evening already : ( ].
But the warming sunshine plus a few freshly squeezed orange juices seemed to help!
Hanging around the station for Pompeii are various hawkers and spurious guides which I would recomend you avoid!]
If we thought her knowedge of Naples was comprehensive then, she really excelled even further when we went to Pompeii. We followed and visited all the main sites but she was able to point out small quirky features and sights along the tour which really helped paint a fuller picture.
She even managed with humour and aplomb to have the right words when wandering through the recently restored brothel area.
Our guide was a true fountain of knowledge, I would recomend a longer stay / one day minimum in Pompeii as it is considerably bigger in size than we expected despite our copious research .
The walking in the streets is tricky at times [ Especially after the long night before] but was not too arduous with correct footwear, it amazing to see and walk in chariot tracks on these roads 2000 years later.
Ludovica looked after us incredibly well and even some of the other tours tagged along with us for part of the time as her delivery and knowledge wsa perfect.
Try to get a direct train back and not one that stops at every station back to Naples which is a bit tedious after a long walking day.
Would I recomend Naples yes it's really different. And Pompeii? - yes it is as impressive and a "must see" far more advanced than say Petra. It shows how far civilisation had progressed in comparison with primative Northern Europe and was a day to always remember.
Finally, would I recomend Slaerno Tours yes on our experience 100%

Our guide Tony was prompt at the dock, with a big welcoming smile. The four of us wanted a drive-through look at Naples (he delivered), a 2 hour tour of Pompeii (Ilaira was spot-on and exceptional), and time to roam on foot in at least 2 of the peninsula cities. Tony selected Positano on the south, and Sorrento on the north and set us free. And he narrated the whole way, both ways. Beer & authentic pizza right on the Positano beach was pretty special. It was a great day, getting back to the ship right on time. We spent the next day in Rome with this same company, getting the same great results. We looked high & low before booking, thought the value was the best available, and were not disappointed.
