Don't skip this beautiful church, even if you've "seen them all"! It's really stunning and make sure you get the audio tour. We got there shortly before closing (poor planning on our part) so we had to rush a little, which was unfortunate for us. I'm so glad we got a chance to see this wonderful place though.

Magnificent - do not miss the crypt with the tomb of St Matthew and its marbles; and study the Great Door, made in Constantinople around 1050AD

The Duomo is the main church of the city of Salerno in southern Italy. It is one of the most visited place and is dedicated to Saint Matthew.

The most striking feature is the bell tower 1150 AD, with small arcades and mullioned windows, in Arabic-Norman style. The façade has a Romanesque portal with Byzantine style bronze doors from Constantinople about 1090's it has over fifty panels with figures, crosses and stories from the life of Jesus. The entrance has a portico with 28 antique columns whose pointed arches, show influence of Arab art, and contains a series of ancient Roman sarcophagi.

A wonderful Cathedral and well worth visiting.

We got lost on a bus on the way to Salerno, got off in this town and were pleasantly surprised.
It is an enchanting little hit town. We wandered our way through the town heading toward the sea. The Christmas decorations are already up between the little narrow streets. What a wonderful way to start the season. There are many lovely shops to choose from as well. Glad we got lost..

From Via Roberto il Giscardo, to the right of the Duomo, you can admire the facade of the Duomo, with its beautifully carved central portal closed by two bronze doors, which were cast in Constantinople in 1099. Very interesting medieval church with a splendid Romanesque bell tower.
