Hostel Salerno
Reviewed April 17, 2013

It's already a year since visiting here, but I'll still want to review it. The location is quite good, although bit of a walk from the train station. Finding the hostel was also problematic as there are so many narrow alleys around. the setting is nice and my dorm room was clean. It's a big hostel but there were not many customers that time (it was off-season anyway). The breakfast was great, probably the best I've had in any hostel, one extra star for that.

Friendly staff at reception + best location in Salerno + clean room + italian breakfast = happy customer!

If you want a luxurious suite with bathtub and in room entertainment, go somewhere else. If you want a good bed, good shower and value for money, this is the right place for you. You have the historic centre outside your window, the seaside promenade 2 min walk away, art shops and restaurants on your doorstep, a great location for exploring this lovely city.

Bring some earplugs if you are a light sleeper, the nightlife in Salerno is lively and you are in the middle of it.

Room Tip: Rooms to the back are more quiet.

In order to limit my lodging expenses, I opted for a hostel: Ave Gratia Plena.
This former convent, located in the heart of Salerno, creates a different atmosphere than your usual hotel. It has a nice courtyard, where one can rest while enjoying the weather with a free hot drinks and the company of others.

This makes up for the rather Spartan-style single room - they also have dorms on the other floors - which lacks a TV and even (adjustable) heating.
The room and bath room were clean, and the single bed comfortable.
Daily fresh towels were provided - usually not worth mentioning but in this case I could have chosen a room without this service - though these were rather strange: the size resembled a towle, but the material was barely thicker than a sheet.
No problems with sounds nor weird smells, so I was happy.
Breakfast is simple but sufficient to get you started for the day.
Note that free wifi is available on the ground floor - not in the rooms.

The girls at reception were most helpful, with Nadia (from Argentina) being the friendliest of the bunch. They provided the best tips for eating places - some of them quite cheap - a well as nice places to see.
Discovering that a car is more of a nuisance than a blessing, they also directed me to the nearest affordable parking spots (and still you end up paying about 13 euro per day).

This hostel is certainly a good choice for 40 per day (which need to be paid up front).

I didn’t plan to stay in Salerno, but on the last minute I decided to go and I chose to stay in this hostel.
The hostel is very big, in an old monastery or something.
It was very organized and spacious.
There are a lot of different types of people staying there, from backpackers to family and Italians.
I used the self service laundry and it was simple and cheap.
My dorm was very big, and in the first night I was the only one in the room.
The hostel is very friendly and is easy to meet new people.
The location is very good too, in the heart of the historical center and corner with the Via Mercanti.
From the train station is a 10-15 min walk, but if you want to go north (Amalfi Coast or Sorrento) the buses pass three blocks down.
The breakfast is very good, with different types of bread, juice, yogurt, and coffees.
Lots of bars and restaurants to go at night only a few steps from the hostel.

Well it doesn't have a wow factor when u see the building or the rooms.. but they have comfortable rooms and bathrooms.. located a couple of minutes distance from the main road and coast.. we had a fantastic time exploring the city and dining very close to the hostel as the main road with the fantastic restaurants is so close! Distance from the station to the hostel is quite a bit but walkable.. although you might wanna take a bus/cab if u have luggage.. The hostel had internet but wireless coverage did not reach our rooms so be sure to ask about that prior to check in.. breakfast was nice as the dining area is superb.. a great place if you're not too fussy about the rooms being pretty!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the entrance are not recommended as it gets noisy

I stayed in this hostel for a week from 13th June 2012 with three friends. The location although central in terms of the city is a good 20 minute walk from Salerno station and the main bus terminal. The hostel itself is a beautiful converted convent and what makes it even better is that all floors are accessible via lift (great if like us you have large suitcases) We stayed in a 4 person private room which was adequately sized, and very clean (maids mop the floors and emptied the bins every day, though a change of bed linen would have been good) Although some people have written that the beds are uncomfortable, I found nothing wrong with them. In terms of negatives of the room, the bathroom floor when wet becomes extremely slippery so much so we we're forced to use one of our own towels as a bath mat. A second tiny criticism is that although there is a fan in the room, the rooms can still be a little warm to sleep in in the evenings. The staff were excellent!! When asking about beaches some were more knowledgeable than others, however when it came to bus and train times, staff printed off the information for us so we knew the exact times. One great thing about the area is that it is not commercialized! This is good when it comes to eating out as all of the restaurants are brilliantly priced- A Margarita pizza costing about 4 euros. Overall the hostel is excellent as a base for exploring the west coast of Italy with great train and bus links. The staff are exceptional always looking for ways to help you and the hostel kept clean and tidy. I would recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a inexpensive way to see the beautiful Italian western coastline

I stayed in this hostel last weekend. The location is very central and easily accessible.
The building has a wonderful courtyard, where there is also a bar and you can have your breakfast there.
The rooms are basic but clean and the bathroom a good size.
My room was on the topfloor and i had a lovely view of the sea.
I recommend it.
