Let me be the first to admit that I am scared of heights.
Ever since I looked at the steep cliff face of El Capitan in Yosemite (from the absolute safety of ground level) I have wondered what it must be like to sleep on the side of a cliff. If you want to try it, also in absolute safety, then book into Hotel La Ninfa and ask for Room 4.
The whole of La Ninfa is dangling on the side of a cliff. When someone empties the water from their sink, it spurts out down the cliffside. 426 steps below the hotel is the beach, where the umbrellas look like coloured marbles and people look like ants. And in front of you, is the massive Amalfi Bay and all its boat life. Try asking the hotel next door if you may use their lift. Things are pretty laid back in Positano – they just might let you.
The view itself from Hotel La Ninfa is worth it. But don't expect luxuries as you enjoy this safe simulation. The breakfast room also offers this astounding panorama, but it is baking hot in the morning – probably exactly like waking up on a cliff face. The air conditioning is welcome relief, but there's not much space in the room.More
