“Clean and Friendly”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2010

The location of the hotel is desirable. We traveled all along the Amalfi Coast with a quick walk to the bus stop, the ferries and the beach. There are numerous shops and restaurants within yards/meters of the hotel. However when we got in our room which was situated in the back of the hotel, our room was amazingly quiet. Except for the birds and the church bells every 15 minutes. The lobby is just a pass through with a few seats. But the upper deck on the fifth floor with kitchen/bar/breakfast room is roomy and airy. The views at breakfast were awesome. Rooms had tiled floors, no screens on the windows, tightly spaced bathrooms and are fairly standard for all hotels in the area. The linens and floors were spotless and well-maintained. The pillows and mattresses were pretty hard. There were other reviews that complained about the older model televisions. Well, they replaced them with flat screens. But for the English-speaking, you get CNN, BBC, Sports and one other station. If you've traveled to the Amalfi Coast, and spent a full day traveling from the United States you won't be watching television in your room anyway! We had rooms off the hall which had a little private terrace the cleaning ladies hung the linens on. Which worked well for us to hang our bathing suits and towels after a day at the beach. There were five of us, two parents and 18, 16 and 12 year old and we were all happy staying at the Amalfi Hotel. Please note: hotels ask for your passports right away on check in and then return them. This is standard practice, so don't be alarmed.
Also, this hotel is up a flght of stairs between two buildings, around a corner, up a few more steps and would not be easily accessed by someone without two sturdy legs. Someone with a baby carriage or wheel chair might want to arrange access through the hotel's garage entrance at street level and take the lift up.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL.

The location is good, and that is all there is to say.

The rooms are small and dark.

The owners are extremely unpleasant and I cannot stress enough that you SHOULD NOT STAY at this hotel.

I booked our 2 night stay after reading mixed reviews on here, we found the hotel to be in a great location right in the centre of Amalfi yet on a side street so not too noisy either. Yes, there are cathedral bells early in the morning, but being close to the cathedral is one of the good points so to expect to not hear the bells is unrealistic. (The bells chime every 15 mins but are not really a problem). We had a garden room, which initially I was unsure about on the walk there but it turned out to be a big plus - we had our own small balcony and no noise from other rooms so great for getting some sleep (unlike in Rome!). It's not the flashest hotel in the world and some of the decor did look a bit old but everything was clean and functional. The view from the breakfast rooftop is unbeatable, it felt great to spend some real time getting to know Amalfi after all the day time visitors have left and staying here allowed us to do that.
I would also say that the restaurant 'La Perla' next door is very good as mentioned on here, we went back the second night we enjoyed it so much.

I have been travelling for 30 years regularly and I found this well run family hotel very good and am amazed at some of the feedback. The rooms are squeaky clean and cleaned every day, there is always staff that speak english and are very helpful, the bed was perfect I like a firm bed and good pillows,a great shower it was quiet I looked over some lemon trees. The Internet was generous with a free hour first and then 6E after that, was easy to use not like what I have found in other EU countrys, the restaurant next door La Perla a star and convenient to the supermarket over the road. The Breakfast was typically continental, they had a good muesli fruit and yoghurt which varied eavh day and coffee was generous. could see BBC news for english news

We had a very pleasant surprise by the standard of the room we had at this lovely hotel.
The room had clearly been decorated recently and was absolutely beatifull. Clean, large, and very well presented. The bathroom was large and newly decorated.
Breakfast was served on the roof terrace and good, the sound of the cathedral bells was charming and the ambience of the whole setting perfect! I would definately return to this hotel.

Yes, the place is very clean. That's the best and only positive thing I can say. The church bells did not bother us at all - probably because we were exhausted and would have slept on a clothes line. The pillows were rock hard and tiny. The towels were fresh every day, but smelled of vinegar. Our room smelled like a church - built into the ancient walls? - but the window was less than two feet from and at right angles to the one next door. We had no privacy, and neither did they, for that matter. The man next-door watched and shouted at the football on TV at every opportunity. Our room was unbearably hot and we could not work the air-conditioning. It turned out we had to pay an extra 10 Euros a day for aircon and if we had requested a small fridge, that would have been extra too. When we queried the extra costs we were told it was our fault for trying to get a cheap deal on Expedia.
We looked forward to the Italian breakfast - oh dear!
On offer was a selection of cheap processed ham and cheese; chewy old rolls and pre-packed cakes (we could smell the real bakery next door); tinned! fruit and cheap yoghurt. Not a tomato or olive in sight. We were allowed one cup of tea or coffee - cup number 2 came at a price. I watched for the reactions of Italian guests who turned up after us. They looked ashamed.
Apart from the hotel?
We took a taxi to Amalfi from Napoli airport - it cost 186 Euros (the return journey by bus cost 4 Euros each) and we had to lug our cases up the steep last part of the journey. At the beach, 2 loungers and a parasol cost 18 Euros a day. We weren't allowed to use the ones near the water's edge as they were reserved for 'the first rank' - nobody came? We had to grovel in the fag end area at the back of the beach, or go elsewhere. A boat trip to Capri was lovely, but Capri itself is hell on earth unless one is prepared to pay millionaire prices.
Italian friends say don't go to these places in August. Now we know.
But we will never go to Amalfi again at any time of year, except maybe for a day trip, or a sail-by. It all looks divine from out at sea.
Walk 20 minutes round the coast to Atrani and there is a much more authentic experience - they looked at us as if we were mad when we said we were staying in Amalfi. Or, in Amalfi, walk to the end of the main street and go to the last cafe on the right - we had the best ever eggs, chips, olives and salad. And no extra charges! They gave us ice in our drinks and let us use the bathroom for free.

Paid 180Euros for a very poor room. Everything at the hotel is very dated, and the only thing I would recommend to somebody staying there is to bring a set of binoculars to watch the TV. It is that small.
