I would not stay at this hotel again. While the views were stunning, the hotel was old and needs a major refurbishment. They had wonderfull facilities, a cave bar for example, a nice pool, but absolutely nothing going on. After dinner the place totally died, guess nothing to do but go to sleep. There was a shuttle bus that went into town during the day but takes about 25 min. If you get stuck in Amalfi by missing the shuttle or traveling outside of hours of operation the cost of a taxi is 40 euro one way. They also charge to use the beach at 10 euro per day, which doesnt seem right as a guest of the hotel. The staff I did not find to be friendly at all and frankly pretty rude. There has to be better in the Amalfi area.

My husband, daughter and I decided to take a trip to Amalfi over Easter. I looked at reviews on Trip Advisor and decided to choose the Excelsior Grand Hotel. Even though some of the reviews stated that the rooms were "dated" we did not find that to be a bother. Views from the balcony were breath taking, the rooms were very clean and the staff were extremely helpful. There was a shuttle that went down to the town of Amalfi and back several times a day, even at night. The young woman at the desk made sure we knew about local activities during out stay i.e. trips to the island of Capri, Easter celebrations, and beach spots. The breakfast in the morning was mouthwatering. We ate outside on the deck over looking the coast. Don't overlook this accommodation! It is a great place for a good price. :)

We spent four nights here and it was disappointing because it's so dated, there were no sun beds, the pool was dirty, the bedroom walls paper thin and the breakfast ok but tasteless scrambled eggs and cold bacon isn't good enough.

The positives were the view, friendly staff and private beach.

Room Tip: Suites have a nice view across the sea.

We thought Excelsior was average, dated & did not deserve a 4* rating but our main complaint was the disappointing food. Breakfast was almost inedible, we eventually gave up & went to Amalfi to eat. The ala carte was poor quality; small, over priced, dry and tasteless.

The view was amazing but definetly would not go back as the stay was not enjoyable. The hotel were trying hard to provide a posh food experience but delivered the opposite.

Back to basics, get the little things right first.

The views were amazing! We were lucky enough to stay in a room out on the far side of the hotel, so had an almost private view and balcony. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast and dinner was very basic though. The 800 steps out the back to the Amalfi town square are quite a challenge coming back up, but an amazing experience going down. We had a bit of trouble with the free shuttle which took us down to the town square. We waited over two hours for it in the pick up zone, past three opportunities for it to come, and we never saw it. It wasn't reliable and we had to take a town bus home.
