Loved the Bay area with nice scenery. A lot of the town though is very dirty and there are some slum sections. OK for a visit but we stayed in Sorrento instead.

Only drove through here on a trip around Italy but the landscape here is absolutely stunning!! I love Italy in general but this is one of the highlights if you enjoy just walking around and taking in a view.

We took a trip out to Naples when we were staying in Rome/ Hired the services of a driver named Dominic and this was the best thing we could have done. The car was spotless, the driver was informative and helpful. He was trustworthy and gave us the most wonderful tour ot Naples, the Bay and the old town, the places of interest and Pompeii. It was a fantastic trip, the views were spectacular and well worth a visit. We were warned about the unscupulous people around the station and our driver ensured our safety at every step.

Naples..Great trip, great Gritty city...

The Artecard Tutta la Regione at 27Euro is no longer available...i was offered a different card for 30 euro that did not include the Sorrento/Amalfi region on the travel side

My original plan to do the Amalfi coast went out of the window...reckon on a 3 day visit you need a full day to whizz round the city. Naples seemed huge compared to the various other Italian cities i have visited and my feet suffered like never before. Fav areas were around Piazza del Plebiscito and particularly the buzz of Spaccanapoli and watching cars and motor scooters trying to negotiate the narrow streets/alleyways and somehow managing to avoid human casualties.
2nd day, caught the bus from the Sita bus station by the port..thought i could do Pompei, Sorrento and the Amalfi coast in a day..well to fully appreciate Pompei i reckon you need at least 4 hours there..by the time i had taken a train to Sorrento and spent a couple of hours walking around, it was 4.30 pm.
The bus stop for the Amalfi coast was right outside the train station...suppose it was doable...reach Amalfi at 6pm...get the last 2 hrs of daylight there then return on the bus around 8pm...hour and a half bus back to Sorrento ...then over an hour on the train followed by 2 metro trips back to the hostel.. but i was looking at hitting the sack around midnight...and had to be up at 6.30am for the Capri ferry...so i have saved the Amalfi trip for another time.

Anyone on a budget or with limited time in the area...the Caremar ferry from Calata Porta Di Massa at 07.25 (ticket office right by the side of the ferry berth) is great value 12.70 euro...get to Capri before 9am and the crowds..bus to Anacapri for the breathtaking views...a stroll around and then back to Capri town for the walk down Via Krupp and back up the road to town from Marina Piccola.
This still gave me a couple of hours in the town and port before catching the return ferry back at 2.50pm...a bargain at 11.20 euro..added bonus of spending the 80 min trip sunbathing on deck,.apparently the temp was 23c...very pleasant

Was back in Napoli just after 4pm and wandered up to Via Tribulani ..found a Pizzeria and enjoyed my 5 euro's worth of what Naples made famous.

I finished my day off with a stroll down Via Toledo (with thousands of others it seemed) and then along the front to Castel dell' Ovo and along Via Carraciolo.

Loads of Graffiti and manic traffic about but no worse than in Palermo...my only complaint is not having an extra couple of days to fit more in. suppose i will have to return Asap.

Have read many concerns in the forums re safety, but have to say, i have never felt the least bit threatened or unsafe in any Italian city and Naples was no different.

My girlfriend and I visited Naples on a day trip from our base in Sorrento. Like everyone else has said it is incredibly dirty with bags of rubbish, litter and graffiti everywhere you look. We didn't feel safe walking around and there is a surprising lack of police around. Its a real shame as there is bags of potential for it to be great city, but its ruined by the high crime rate and filth. We visited the national archaeological museum which was a disappointment as around 50% of the exhibits were shut but what we did see was good and built on what we saw at Pompeii. Maybe if the city sorts its many social problems out it would be a great place to visit, but I certainly wont be going back anytime soon.
