“Historic building and nice atmosphere”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

I really liked this place, too bad there were not a lot of other guests. Situated in a historic building (former palace) in the centre of Cosenza, high ceilings, classic furniture. Nice private bathrooms. Big but cosy kitchen. Breakfast is included and ok. Very good quality for the price!

Ostello Re Alarico lies in Cosenza's historical centre. It is led by a very friendly and very young Calabrian couple, Achille and Claudia. The Hostel is housed in an historical palace, just a few meters from the National Gallery of Calabria - Palazzo Arnone. When his family bought the palace, Achille applied to get some funds to restore it from the Italian state and.... miracoulously got them, because of his very young age!
Teaching in the Università della Calabria, I've been in the Hostel many, many times. I prefer it to the University's houses. Re Alarico Hostel, in fact, turns out to be a true experience. Every room is different from the other, even though all of them are worthed their price.
The cost p/p goes from 16 to 25 euro and includes breakfast. Claudia's also a good cook: so, if you ask it in a polite way, she might give you a taste of Calabrian cuisine, if you ask her in advance and in a polite way. Otherwise you might get beers and other beverages as well, all at a very moderate price.

We found this charming hostel in the AIG/IHA listings and were surprised at how comfortable and lovely it was. It is in the medieval part of Cosenza, which is a small town but is easy to get to. The owners picked us up at the train station, and were helpful in many ways. This is a great place to spend a few days just slowing down the tourism pace. Good restaurants and sites close by.

Room Tip: There are stairs here; not a problem for most.
