Stayed for only two nights and after spending time at the Hilton in Lecce it wasn't quite as good.

When we went into our rooms the towels hadn't been changed and there was rubbish in a bin. Our excellent Tour Manager Paula, sorted it immediately for us.

The balcony was littered with butt end and the door nearly fell off when we opened it to the balcony. Also the plastic sheet between our balcony and the one next door had a crack in it.

The room was designed for business people so there was a desk but no dressing table.

The food was nice.

Ground floor room we were given stank of stale cigarette smoke, we could not stay in there even with the patio doors open, given another small dingy room on the 3rd floor, obviously not made up ready, no suplies of anything. Others on our package group also had problems, one had dirty towels! Food mediocre, dried up chicken legs for evening meal. Housekeeping staff were not up to standard, reception staff not good either. Well out of town and any type of civilisation, no where to walk in the evenings, good job we had not chosen this hotel ourselves! But the gardens will be lovely WHEN they are completed.

Room Tip: No stairs so choose a room on the 1 or 2 floors as the lift has a mind of its own (only one lift wor...

Not up to expected standard for a Hilton. Was given a ground floor room adapted for disabled person with sliding doors to patio which was not happy with. Minimal shampoo/soap etc. Staff on desk unhelpful bordering on rude (others on the package tour also commented on this). Food poor. Also well out of old town (we went in by coach).

Room Tip: Would recommend asking for first or second floor.

The bedrooms in this hotel are practical and perfectly adequate, but on the £29 Travelodge lines i.e. an open hanging rail for clothes, nowhere for make-up etc and very basic toiletries, and we have stayed in far better Hiltons than this. The gardens are beautiful, as are the two swimming pools, and there is a lovely terrace for drinks in the evening, but be warned, the lights all go out just before 10 o'clock regardless of how many people are sitting there. The food is fairly basic, but again adequate. The hotel is situated well out of town and certainly not within walking distance, but is very peaceful. I agree with other contributors that the staff appear to have little interest in their customers. As long as that does not bother you, it is a perfectly good place to stay.

A lovely hotel but a long way out of town, certainly far too far to walk. Hotel facilities were excellent both indoor and outdoor pools. The outdoor pool was warm and beautifully landscaped. A pity the bed was so soft and not as big as its sister hotel in Lecce. Evening meal was good and breakfast also good.

We stayed at this hotel for four nights during a trip to Matera - a magical place..
Provided you have your own transport Matera is easily accessible by car (5-10mins) and parking is not difficult. The location of the hotel is outside the town in a borgo set back from the main road - and not far from a commercial centre with shops. Though the general area around the hotel does not have much to say for itself the Hotel gardens are nice and work was ongoing to improve them still further.

This is a modern Hilton hotel and so in terms of decor and ambiance could be anywhere in the world. That said this also meant the facilities were good. Rooms and ensuites spacious, with efficient air-conditioning/heating under your own control in rooms. The leisure facilities consisted of indoor/outdoor pools, Spa and Gym with good equipment and were clean and well run.

The benefit of staying outside of Matera is that we could enjoy modern facilities and leisure time part of the day before enjoying the delights of Matera later in the day and evening.

Francesca deserves a special mention for her very warm welcome, cheerful and willing assistance with providing information about Matera, and equally warm greetings when we checked out. She made the experience feel more personal. Other Reception staff were generally very good,

We only ate breakfast at the hotel and this was good and service was noticeably better during an inspection of the hotel by Hilton managers.

The Hilton Garden is certainly worth consideration if you have your own transport, and enjoy modern comforts.

When I give a poor rating to this hotel, it is not because of the appearance or the facilities, but the simple fact is that a modern attractive building has been placed in the middle of nowhere, and the staff simply are not seem willing or able to cope with an influx of guests. Many of the writers about this establishment are Riviera travelers, as was I. So the problem for the company is accommodating about 50 guests in about 30 rooms, which does not leave a lot of choice in Matera.
The hotel looks as if it has only recently been opened. It is pristine and attractive, but I was told it has been open for ten years. Perhaps it is a place where the locals come for their afternoon delight and then go back to their respective homes. It has a beautiful outdoor pool, a large indoor pool and a health center with lockers with no locks, silly rules about pool hats and overshoes that may or may not be obvserved
Rooms are not as big as the sister in Lecce, but adequately large and comfortable by Italian standards. There is a small television with a Sky box (which defeats many users), a fridge, which does not work in the case of the room I was in. I was told it was only for keeping things cool not cold, but it was at room temperature. The restaurant gave me some ice to turn it into an ice box, and the reception allowed me to keep some cold drinks in the vending refrigerators in reception, but in a 4* hotel, you should not be having to do this.
The bathroom was spotless, and the kettle looked as if no one had ever used it before. There was a small desk in a dark corner, and enough hanging space for a couple of days. The outside of the windows may not have been cleaned recently, and a previous occupant had stuck a hand outside the window and drawn an un-smiley face in the grime.
Our party had to eat in one night, and that was where it started to unravel. The bar was staffed by one person, and they were incapable of raising any help when 50 people entered the bar brandishing cash. In fact they did not want cash, but put it all on the room numbers, and then created another queue when it came to settling bills at the end. The set meal for the evening was competent but uninspiring, and with only two people to serve 50 people, despite a pre-ordered evening meal, service was so slow that some people had finished before others had been served. The breakfast buffet was adequate, but with the usual Italian proviso that coffee machines were too slow in operating to cope with 50 people, juice machines were dispensing undiluted concentrate, and hot food was cold i.e. a huge vat of scrambled eggs at a temperature well below that acceptable to even the most tolerant English palate.
The hotel is much further out of Matera than other contributions indicate. There is a local bus that comes once an hour, but our guide said that it did not always run, so you were captive unless you have your own transport to cover the 7 km into town. The only thing the hotel is approximately convenient for is the commercial/industrial zone a couple of kilometers away, but as a tourist there is no reason to see this.
Conclusion: Attractive comfortable hotel in the middle of nowhere with negligible standard of service

Room Tip: There is no winning, as the best located rooms might not have functioning facilities. Suggest you as...
