“Fantastic place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

This is an amazing place to stay, I would so recommend it - we enjoyed every minute of our 5 night stay and just can’t wait to go back, to both this hotel, and Matera.

The whole place has an amazing feel and atmosphere – it has been designed and furnished so well, with all the little touches you would expect from a hotel of this standard. Each room is different, so if you get a chance, check out some of the others - it is incredible what has been done with some of the spaces. We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms (room 5) – incredibly large space, with an enormous bed. If you can go that extra bit, definitely worth treating yourself to an upgrade from standard to a deluxe room.

I cannot write a review here without mentioning the owner, Roberto and all the staff. Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and helpful, always had a smile – that really makes a difference.

Away from the hotel, the Sassi part of Matera was fascinating, unspoilt and so interesting just to wander around the myriad of alleys and narrow streets.
Would recommend restaurants, Oi Marì (Fish, pizza, pasta etc) – it is about 5 mins walk in the Sassi (Good bar next door, Vicolo Cieco – lively at weekends). Also, Fornaci (great fish restaurant), about 10 mins walk. Matera does not seem to be full of restaurants and bars, so worth noting these two.

Sleeping in a renovated crypt was magical! The hotel is both luxuriously elegant and authentically restored with architecture typical of ancient Matera. Beautiful interior design, stunning views, impressive continental breakfast. The service was superb. The staff worked tirelessly to answer all of my questions over email in advance, help me with transport options, give me advice and make me comfortable. This made Matera all the more special!

Room Tip: Regardless of which room you stay in, ask the staff if you can look into other empty rooms while you...

There is something about this hotel that leaves you pleased you stayed there. We think it's down to the staff, especially the energetic porter who happily carries your luggage along the cobbled streets and you can hardly keep up with him.
We found it on T/A but book well in advance.

For your stay here in this "cave type accommodation" in the Sassi area, plan to pack just one small suitcase and leave the rest of your stuff in the car, which the hotel will arrange to be parked in a secure garage for €20 a day. (This must be booked when you book your hotel room). It is a long walk from car to the hotel, up and down cobbled streets and it’s easy to get lost. Hence the Porter service.

We didn’t think Hotel in Pietra was the right hotel for those seeking soft furnishings and comfort. Apart from a comfortable bed, the designer favoured hard stools and dim lighting. They don't score excellent because the breakfast was disappointing, awful coffee, but staff so nice, made up for all that and there are so many good bars to have breakfast in.

For our third night we had to move rooms and they put us into an annex they had done very little with. Certainly no designer had been at work. But it was fantastic because we were right amongst the Sassi. Take a chair and admire the view from 2 French windows and it had a sun terrace up a flight of metal stairs if you were energetic and wanted to sit in the sun. They kindly gave us a bottle of white wine. Think they thought we’d moan but we did not, they even gave us a dial up cable for internet so we were very happy. We paid €130 a night including € 20 for secure car parking. Worth it as by that stage car full of wine from Puglia and stuff! So if you don't mind scruffy, tiny shower but light and bright and fabulous views, try to get a deal on the annex a few steps below the hotel itself.

Room Tip: Room 1006 good position

We only stayed one night but our impression of both the hotel and the town were fantastic. I have never been anywhere quite like it and would love to go back to spend more time exploring and soaking up the unique atmosphere.

The hotel were very helpful in organising our parking and luggage. We didn't want to lug our heavy bags all the way to the hotel for one night, so we used their secure garage and left the big bags in the car. We were very greatful we had organised this in advance and paid the extra to do so, as the way down through the Sassi to the hotel is convoluted, cobbled and steep and not much fun with heavy luggage if you don't know where you are going.

We arrived before official check in time, but having called the hotel an hour before we arrived, they sent a guy to meet us at the parking garage and take us directly to the hotel where our room was ready straight away.

We had one of the smallest rooms, right at the front of the hotel, almost on the footpath - but there were no issues with privacy or noise and the unusual layout of the rooms is all part of the charm. The cavernous reception area is fantastic - a tranquil and cool retreat from the heat and sun and the little terrace outside a pleasant place for an evening drink.

The room was compact and the bathroom even smaller, but they were very comfortable and well thought out, with everything you could need and of very good quality. If you were staying for more than a day or two it would be worth spending more on the bigger rooms but for our one night it worked perfectly.

The guy at reception suggested somewhere great for lunch, but in the evening we took pot luck and not having a reservation on a Saturday night was a bit of a mistake. If there is somewhere you really want to go it's definitely worth asking for a recommendation and a booking - the old town restaurants are very popular with both tourists and locals and we had to try several places before we could find a free table.

Matera is a fantastic place and the hotel ideally located to make the most of your stay - I know it's not exactly undiscovered, but it's still that little bit far from anywhere else to be swamped with tour buses and souvenier hunters. It really merits a trip of it's own - not just a stopover on the way to or from somewhere else and I would love to come back and spend more time - both in the hotel and in the town.

Unfortunately only had one night at this unique property. We were met at the carpark and escorted to the hotel, which was good because we probably would have gotten lost on our own. The Hotel was not like anywhere we've ever stayed before. Loved the boutique feel of the place. We were given a choice of rooms and decided to upgraded to the deluxe room pictured here on Tripadvisor. Totally cool room, slightly humid feel but that's to be expected in a cave and part of the experience! Very friendly and helpful reception. We thought the location was really good and we wandered into the new town that night and were treated to a festival and fireworks. Seems like every town in Italy had a festival going on while we were there in July. However, I think July was too hot to really enjoy this area. It was 32 degrees by 9:30am and with all the walking it was just energy draining. I think the fall would be a more enjoyable time to go.

A beautiful hotel to stay at in a wonderful place. The hotel is wondefully designed out of the rocks, the reception is stunning and we loved having delicious little treats for breakfast there, our room was equally well designed and very calm and relaxing. Roberto was excellent in his advice on where to eat, and directions and was a very kind host . It was the perfect place to stay on a wonderful trip and birthday treat to Matera. I was unexpectedly very sad to leave (at least I have the little reminder gift to cheer me up at home) and I very much hope to return to this serene retreat in a very unique place.

Room Tip: contact the hotel to ask as each room is very different in layout.

the sassis itself are astonishing and the hotel helps to keep this immage all your stay long. The room number 1006 is fantastic. It is huge, a little humate, but that is beacause its in the stone. We were here for to nights (inbetween a bicycle trip for two weeks) and the second time had number 1008, which is a room for acrobatic people and with less stuff (as the beds are reached by a narrow stair) and there is no way to leave things lying around. And number 1008 had a parfum smell which was a little to much (as outside was some stinking something, so we could decide whether we wanted to smell parfum or stinking somethings).

But all in all, the hotel is wonderfull. The staff is very friendly and the reception hall itself is already worth a visit. The breakfast buffet is huge and no wish stays unfullfilled.

The beds are perfect to sleep and the location is in the middle of the sassi so almost everything can be reached by foot.

Just make sure, for my opinion, you don't get number 1008 as there is no place to leave things lying and you have to climb down the stairs in the middle of the night for a pi.

Room Tip: make sure you don't get number 1008 as it is narrow and has acrobatic stairs.
