Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort
Ranked #9 of 30 Hotels in Matera
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 9, 2014

Very nice and big room with two (!) huge beds. Very modern. Would have been nice with a more rustic style to go with the atmosphere of Matera. Excellent breakfast buffet in the lovely cave restaurant. We would have loved to have a drink on the terrace after dinner (which we ate elsewhere) but unfortunately the restaurant and bar had already closed. Five star service.

Beautiful rooms, new decor, chic bar, amazing breakfast, friendly, efficient and helpful staff. Restaurant just down the road translating to 'the two sassis' was so amazing that we ate lunch and dinner there on the same day!

My husband and I spent the first few nights of our honeymoon in a Junior Suite here and loved it.

We had a cave suite, it was quite cool despite the 33C temps outside. The room and bathroom were beautiful, the beds are a little harder than some but I slept well. The room had a TV, sofa, no bath just a shower but not a problem. My husband felt the damp a little but I didn't mind at all - it is a cave after all.

There was a lovely covered sofa-swing in the mini-patio outside and I sat in it every afternoon reading, it was so quiet and peaceful.

There is a view from this hotel across the ravine to more caves on the other side.

Breakfast is traditional Italian with lots of choice and very good quality. The staff were all lovely. We ate in the restaurant and the food and wine were fabulous.

It is really hard to find, especially due to the one way system. Print off Google maps and Street View too. The hotel is just a bit further up the road than the piazza with the church you can see on Street View, the sign is tiny, but you can see the entrance marked by a white canopy.

Parking is in the piazza and we didn't have any problem with that. Free wi-fi in reception only.

Driving round Matera is difficult as roads are mainly narrow and cobbled. The town is full of steep steps.

This hotel may be a bit hard to find, but it is well worth the effort - print the Google Maps from home. The location is excellent with amazing views of the Sassi, the town and ancient cave dwellings and churches. The rooms are an amazing collection of romantic and intimate 'dwellings' with candles throughout. We had reserved a cave room, which was perfect, but on arrival, we switched to a room with a terrace and amazing view. We noted no difficulty with lighting or dampness as reported by another traveler. The staff, including the restaurant servers, was completely attentive and helpful and interested in providing an enjoyable stay. Speaking of the restuarant. it was amazing with the views exceeded only by the quality of the food - probably the best we enjoyed on our trip! This hotel provided one of the very best experiences we have had in our Itlalian travels.

Room Tip: Take a look at the website. The rooms actually look like the photos! Theay're all great.

Staying at this type of cave-dweilling hotel added to the beautiful and unique experience of visiting this amazing city, Matera. The owner and hotel staff were friendly, charming and helpful in every way. Our cozy cave-like room was very comfortable and clean and we had a beautiful little terrace to sit out on to enjoy the beautiful of Sassi. The breakfast that is served either outside on a terrace with a beautiful view also of Sassi or inside their beautifully designed dinning area was very delicious with some of the best home-made jam I have ever had which the owner gave me a jar of.
We only stayed for 3 nights and we hope to come back and stay in this hotel to explore and experience more of this truly unique city.

We booked a suite located in an elevated situation which provided exceptional views. However whilst the room was spacious there was a smell of damp and the lighting was very poor at one end of the suite. The staff were attentive and Michele was particularly good in the dining room. The food in the dining room was very good and probably the best we had during our stay in Matera. Visitors should be warned that you have to be ready to walk up and down many steps to get to your rooms and this will prepare you for the rest of your walk around Matera! I would strongly recommend a visit to Matera to view the caves that many people lived in until the 1970's - the area is set to become the capital of culture in 2019. Unfortunately we experienced poor weather so a 4 day visit was a little too long. Definitely not a holiday for the disabled who need a wheelchair.

When my wife and I approached to the hotel through narrow and winding road along deep valley, we found its small sign. Looking around, we cannot imagine where rooms. We entered to the reception, which has modern interior decorating and a bellman brought us to the room immediately. First we walked up slope about 50m, up again 10steps, down 5 steps, up 20 steps, and up again last 4 steps, we arrived in front of the door of our room. It has no escalator at all.
Room was great. It might be renovated recently, it is clean and excellent inner packaging. Also, we could see the original ancient city wall in the room. Each room has a terrace faced to the valley. From there, you can see Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso(church) and Casa Grotta. At night, we enjoyed lighting of those as well as lighting show on the cliff. It was enjoyable and nice experience for us. However, when we went out for sightseeing or shopping to anywhere alse, we had to walk up steepy stairs becase the hotel stands at the base of the hill. It was quite an excersise.
