When visiting Matera I decided that I had to sleep in the Sassi and looked for places. I chose this place because it is very nice, in a good position central to everything and the price fitted by budget. We were in one of the depandances, so we had plenty of place and the room was nice, spacious and with the comfort of a beautiful big shower. The hotel has an amazing breakfast that was included in my booking, both with savory products like local cheeses or focacce or pasticciotti and much other.
I only have one critic to do (even if it is published on their page!), i.e. paying for the Spa of the hotel you are staying. I NEVER, ever had to pay for the Spa to use (unless it was a massage), if I was guest in the hotel that had a Spa. I found this very weird even if they have a policy. Normally external guests are the ones to pay for the use of the pool.
For the rest, this place is worth a trying, it is very nice!

The hotel is located in the old part of the city and in pedestrian zone. You can however unload your luggage in front of the entrance. There is no parking place near the hotel. Someone picks up the car to park it and brings it back on demand.
We stayed in a caveroom which had a separate entrance and terrace. Very clean and very special.
Lies also not far from the new town. Is +/- 5 minutes but uphill (lot of stairs)

On the way from Bari to Naples, we spent two days in Matera. The main location of the hotel is on Via Fiorentini which snakes at the bottom of the Sassi between the two hills of old Matera. We had booked a room in a cave but did not realize that these rooms are not located at the main venue. Ours was at the top of the hill, only 250 meters away but it felt as it it were 250 meters up. The room was spacious and well appointed and very cool - we happened to be visiting during a heat wave that made climbing up and going down on the stone paved streets an interesting challenge. These remodeled and updated caves have been inhabited for 4,000 years! The breakfast at the hotel was very good and the sitting area comfortable and with interesting art. What was spectacular was our visit to the spa and our swimming in the underground pool (see picture). It has three consecutive chambers lit in blue - the last one has a jacuzzi built in. In spite of the heat, we were the only ones in the pool and we enjoyed it thoroughly. This is an indelible memory. The hotel is near most of the restaurants in Sassi. We were very pleased with our choice especially of the room in which we stayed.

Room tip: Make sure you know beforehand whether your room is in the main building or in one of the "dependencies".

We were very happy with our stay at Locanda di San Martino in Matera. Our experience of sleeping in a "cave room" provided a lasting memory. The room was clean and the AC worked perfectly. The staff members were very friendly. The only improvement would be to enhance the breakfast offerings - add cold cereal. We used the "thermal" pool treatment and it was great! We highly recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

Inhabited since the Neolithic Period, the Sassi area of Matera, Italy, is a completely different, unexpected and delightful experience! The ancient and primitive dwellings have over time, been renovated, plumbed, electrified and air-conditioned resulting in a blended experience of new & ancient!

Our stay at the Locanda Di San Martino was wonderful! The room was delightful and absolutely quiet! Talk about thick walls! The hotel's rooms overlooked the stunningly striking Sassi area of the city. The Locanda had some small private patio areas scattered amongst the hotel rooms in which groups of friends met for wine in the evening. The breakfast buffet had everything you'd want in the morning! Some friends enjoyed and raved about the hotel's "incave" pool and spa!

FYI - Matera has been selected as the "EU's Capitol of Culture for 2019", so crowds might be larger than usual this summer.

Go Caving in Matera! No bedroll needed!
