Hotel staff was very nice and accommodating! A little hard to fine but, just phone them and they'll give you the correct directions from your location. The Termael baths are a nice touch, if you have the time. The breakfast wasn't bad and the rooms are very nice.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms in the cave. Very quite and cool tempature!

Sleeping in a cave, swimming in a cave and breakfasting in a cave - really the only way to do Matera! The room was lovely and spacious with a great view and lovely little outside space. The spa was gorgeous and super relaxing - swimming through the cave setting felt very cool - but it does cost an extra 10 Euros per trip, which we weren't expecting. You can also use the spa for 20 E if you decide to stay somewhere else. The breakfast was one of the best we had in the south of Italy, which is saying something. My husband got out of bed for it two days in a row, which hardly ever happens. There's a lot of choice between quite similar places in Matera, but we loved having the pool as it does get very hot and the walking up and down hills can be a bit sticky. Definitely recommend both the town and the hotel.

Cordially received upon arrival at this hotel situated in an authentic ancient cave. Rooms were spacious and comfortable. A delicious buffet breakfast was served in a beautiful vaulted room.
Would certainly stay here again if we were to return.

I have to admit that Matera was not even on my radar, but the trip was one of my favorites of my Italy vacation. A truly unique ancient cave city carved into the limestone hillsides, the landscape is truly remarkable, with a feel that is otherworldly. There are numerous cave hotels and B&Bs to chose from, but he San Martino is located in the middle of the restored area, and is a solid four star accommodation. Every room is different, and each with its own character carved into the hill side. We stayed in a large two story lofted room with vaulted cave ceilings and well thought out lighting. The bathrooms were very modern, with first class amenities, plenty of hot water, and excellent towels. Overall, the room was extremely comfortable, and had beds to sleep 5, between the main level and the loft. Even with the modern touches, it retains the feel of living in a cave. It was an easy walk down to restaurants and shops, or up to the piazza, with more shops and dining. When in the hotel, you feel as if you have escaped the outer world and are living in place that time forgot.

The morning breakfast was very good, and the spa is worth visiting. The primary element is a long pool carved out of the caves, than extends back about 30 or 40 meters. In addition, there are relaxation areas, whirlpool spas, a steam room. The charge was 10 euros, and well worth it. Overall, a very good place to spend a couple of nights.

Room Tip: If traveling with a family, ask about family friendly rooms. Our room had a double bed and day bed...

Located in romantic, renovated part of Materna, and build in many levels against the side of the hill allowing beautiful views over the old town. Many of the lrooms are partly build in the many caves for which Materna is renowned. Also the skimming pool and thermae are in caves. A special experience... Breakfast is luxurieus, service great. We loved our stay in this special, nice place.

The historic district or Sassi area of Matera is probably one of the most unique "neighborhoods" in Italy if not Europe! When staying in this ancient area it feels very natural to use a "cave hotel", although a cave with a window and amenities that would astonish the original residents of this area. Hotel e Thermae offers a variety of rooms, at least one with both "upstairs" as well as main floor cave, sleeping areas. There is a spa with heated pool in a subterranean cistern area that , when we were there in the fall, was being renovated.
Breakfast buffet selections are extensive and pastries quite good. Although you are in a district that is several thousand years old, you are a 5 minute walk from the main/modern area of Matera.
At least two quite good restaurants are within a 5 minute walk from the hotel and are also in the Sassi district.
A unique experience in a community that has been the movie setting for first century Jerusalem.
If you go, be sure and do a little reading about the history of this region and the pattern of settlement as recently as the 1960's.
