Locanda di San Martino is a good choice when visiting Matera. It is conveniently located near the main square and is along the Matera walking path of this very old and historic town. The views from outside the rooms overlook the sassis and roof tops. Our room was spacious but very simply furnished, but in a good way. The staff is very helpful with anything you might need. The breakfast is served in a lovely cave-like room.

Stayed here for 3 nights at start of our stay in SE Italy. Was a bit tricky to find as it is buried in the narrow streets of a Sassi hillside (which you find out after you have been there a little while). As is advertised there is nowhere to park your car - there is an offer to park it in a near(ish) car park for 10 euros per day (with an optional pick up for additional 5 euro charge). There is the option of parking it in a free scrubland car park which is about 10 minutes walk away - which is what we did.

The hotel itself is set amongst the caves in the hillside with the rooms emulating living in a cave - this is quirky but really works and gives the rooms a basic but special feel - and no problem with noisy neighbours. We loved the room! Breakfast was typically continental although some hot food was available and was accompanied by live piano music which gave it a relaxed feel. The thermae (pool, sauna, hydrotherapy pool etc) gave us the opportunity to chill out, which we did on a couple of occasions - a great experience even at 10 euro per person.

A couple of additional points - There is a little space to sit outside if you wish. Also, as seems to be the norm in Italy there was no in-room coffee facilities. It is ideally positioned to explore and experience the unique sassi and atmosphere that Matera offers. Beware Matera has a lot of steps and slopes.

Would definitely recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at Locanda di San Martino in late July. The hotel is beautiful and like Matera completely unique. It is one of those places you have to stay to appreciate.
The pool area and spa are breathtaking. The service provided by staff was exceptional.
Be aware that the rooms are truly carved out of the stone of Matera's hillsides. The humidity in the rooms is HIGH. Nights during the summer can be a bit uncomfortable.
Even with that, we would stay again. Locanda di San Martino is a place we look forward to visiting again.

Excellent rooms with cave walls. Very clean, service perfect, excellent breakfast.
Hosts very helpful. Spa awesome, inside a cave, grotto underground. Perfect location, close to piazza. Had a wonderful, relaxing time , loved the thermal pool and the sauna. Rooms good size and very tastefully decorated. Magic atmosphere, will definitely stay there again.
It will make your Matera experience more special, as Matera is already a special place.

Room Tip: No fitness center, but spa with sauna, thermal pool, Steam room, jacuzzi, cooling room with tea and thermal drinking water, very sooting , a real treat.

The hotel is in the centre of everything, the people are lovely, and the hotel is magic. Live piano music at breakfast ... It has everything. The hosts are wonderful and couldn't be more helpful. There is also e facility of letting them take your car to a parking station and return it the next day ... a wonderful thing (for 15 Euro). This hotel is good enough to be on the bucket list.
