Description: The restaurant is located, in the beautiful scenery of the famous city of stones. A timeless landscape that has no equal. Matera looks like, with shapes, colors, visions that make it a unique place in the world. The restaurant owes its name to the street of its location as well as the patron saint of the throat! In a cave of the Paleolithic with sweeping views over the stones, our guests can spend relaxing and pleasant moments ..

“Best in Matera”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

All most all restaurants in Matera close between 3/4pm - 7 pm - so important to remember this if you get hungry around 4.30pm!! We were wandering around exploring, but really looking for a restaurant which was open when we stumbled across San Biagio. When we peeked inside, the very friendly waiters/chef were sitting having a coffee but welcomed us in to have a look around. So friendly and welcoming we reserved that wonderful table with the beautiful view.
This restaurant is quality all the way - these guys are top of their game and should be applauded for their friendly service and their insight into flavors and imaginative cooking. Hubby and I shared the mixed antipasti, then I had the chicken saltimbocca which was superb! Hubby had the lamb which was also fabulous. I had a wonderful dessert, and a couple of limoncello, followed with a coffee. We spent over three hours here and it was the most wonderful dining experience. I really admire the set up here, they are showing a new style of cooking to this region and I thought it was splendid. Huge thumbs up! Hope to return again x

“too chic for matera?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013

THE SERVICE

The service in this restaurant is reminiscent of a fine address in Rome, Paris, London or New York: a tuxedo clad waiter takes great care of his guests, without being too intrusive. When I asked for some olive oil and vinegar for my "pinzimonio" starter, he brought a top-of-the-line aceto balsamico. I have never experienced this, even in a restaurant costing much more than the San Biagio.

DINING ROOM/LOCATION

The dining room is decorated tastefully with photos of people from the region dressed in costumes. It is serendipitous and has local color. The dining room is well-furnished and has a convivial cellar-like feel to it. One table has a great view of the "sassi" of Matera. The restaurant is conveniently located at the entrance to the Sassi when you arrive from above (near the train/bus stations). It is also strategically located 5 minutes from Matera's incredible gelateria. Try to score the table with the view!

THE FOOD

The chef seems undecided as to whether he is going to do traditional Italian dishes or "haute cuisine". He should make up his mind. The aforementioned "pinzimonio" leads one to expect simple country cooking. The main course was a strange crossover: a "nouvelle cuisine" portion of meat (very small-see photo) in an interesting sauce, accompanied by soggy, oily potatoes and tasty vegetables. The antipasti looked very good. I should have ordered this!

THE WINE

Only one wine by the glass was on offer: a tasty, but pricey Chianti. Had I been with more people, I could have chosen a bottle from the list. Still, I was surprised not to see some of the excellent local Primitivo by the glass.

OVERALL

This place is a bit "too cool for school." Either the chef should be as chic as the waiter in his food preparations, or they should go for something a bit more rustic. I would advise them to attempt adventurous food, but really go for it, if the chef is capable of it. This remains to be seen. it was an enjoyable evening and deserves a visit for the high quality service and décor alone.

“A real discovery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

We had lunch at San Bagio and subsequently returned five days later for dinner. Staff were as welcoming as previously and being able to relax in the evening we were able to sample more of the menu. The antipasti was imaginative and very varied. It included, Parma ham, veal sausages, perfectly cooked tuna with at least eight dishes in total. At €15 for two it is fantastic value for money.
Suckling pig fillet in a pistachio crust and cherry sauce was lean and tender. The chicken saltimbocca was delicious.
Frozen zabaglione was a refreshing end to the meal. The white wine was recommended and was justifiably good, better than we expected with an appealing floral character and only €15.

“Fabulous food, fantastic view, great chef!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013 via mobile

What a fabulous find in Matera! Vito is a fantastic chef, he and his brother, Nicolo make a great team! To start, their homemade bread combined with a Primitivo wine was perfect. Then came the perfectly flavored fish soup..... Fantastic! The
Pistachio crusted suckling pig was absolutely decadent, followed by a zabiognone ice cream....que wow! We absolutely loved the two brothers energy and enthusiasm about their relatively new restaurant. The view is absolutely one of the best in Matera. I loved Vito's pride in his town, he has had a great stint in luxury hotels worldwide and will certainly be the shining star of Matera.... What a magical evening.... Thank you!!!
