Just to see this place is a privilege!! everywhere you look there is a breathtaking view, not too easy to get to but well worth the effort.

The view from the piazza overlooking the Sassi is simply breathtaking. I can't believe Americans aren't coming here in droves but I'm so glad that Matera and this whole corner of Italy are still off the radar screen of most tourists. You can wander all around the town and visit some of the cave houses and the little cave churches all without having to fight crowds. So many tourist sights elsewhere focus on how the wealthy lived in the past (palaces, castles, cathedrals) so it's refreshingly different to visit a place like Matera which highlights how peasants lived in this region for centuries under very humble conditions.

Arriving in Matera old town, we were hijacked by a tourist guide company which I later found out was rather expensive (compared to the ones I have seen on TA), but we did not regret that we had a guided tour. Even if we had read quite a lot about Matera before going there, it is not possible to substitute the insight you gain by listening to a guide who can explain details on site. Rather frightening to discover how people lived until the fifties, and with a infant mortality rate of 50%. As the guide told us, it was not so bad to loose a child, they could always make another, but loosing an animal was really grave...In addition to the sassi and their history, our guide made us aware of the big number of falcons living in Matera, and showed us some nests with nestlings.

Matera

Stunning but shocking

Try to get here from via Domenico Ridola, get on the balcony at the left of the Museum and you will be amazed by the stunning view on the sassi! I was literally shocked by the beauty of this place and being myself italian, I regretted I did not come any earlier. We spent 5 hours walking around and touring each church and house that was visitable. This place is magic even more when you hear the historic background, of poverty and misery of the thousand of people who lived in such horrible conditions until the early 50s (the Sassi was considered the shame of Italy, due to the people very poor life condition). Don't miss out a tour of the PALOMBARO LUNGO and ask them directions to the CHIESA RUPESTRE, the latest discovered in Matera. Finally if you can, plan to stay here overnight as there is much more to visit (i.e. the hills in front of Matera, where the original Matera was built, a tour of the canyon and Matera by night). We will definitely come back.

Fees for attractions are approximately 2£ each so definitely worth every penny!!!

A wonderful delight to wander through the hills and valleys of the Sassi. The cave churches with their frescoes are fascinating.
