In today's age, we buy magic. We think magic comes all prettily wrapped up, with ribbons and a price tag. Sometimes it takes something so much more miraculously bigger than we are, to humble our expectations.
I have spent many vacations looking at amazing breathtaking ocean views - yes looking AT.
But I have never felt I am INSIDE something amazing and breathtaking until I came to Matera.
I arrived in the night, and possibly maybe the best time ever. The sight that greeted me was beautiful and even though cliche... I have to say super fairytale like. All the little cave houses in the sassi was lit-up. If anyone has children, they would know what I mean - I felt I was this little kid in a lit-up Santa town with all the elves and lights. Or perhaps being shrunk down in size and put into a pretty doll-house :)
I am still rather amazed at how these magnificent structure has survived the test of times. And now, this place has been made into accomodations, restaurants, hotels for tourists. Just like this B&B that I stayed in.. Fra i Sassi - right at the doorstep of the main street in the Sassi. I stepped into the room and I felt I was in a cave, with high ceilings and so much space considering how small the door looked from the outside. Apparently a space like this can fit whole family, including live stock in the good old days. Modern and old, in a perfectly seamless fusion.
Falling asleep in this room, somehow feels so safe and cocooning. And waking up, opening the windows reveal a view that actually makes me feel there is a bigger force out there, up there - that made this possible. Breakfast was always a quick one for me, as I cant wait to go out to explore... wear proper shoes, and definitely be prepared for the heat!
3 days in Matera, I spent going around and exploring this wonderful phenomenon and possibly looking gobsmacked most of the time. I also met an interesting character - "Bobo Sind" who is a rather popular local singer/italian reggae. And he loves Matera so much, he decided to also be a tour guide on the side. Trust me, you can trust him to be your tour guide - you can ask for him or you can spot him, with his long dreadlocks!
Spent my first evening having a very nice meal in one of the recommended restaurants, La Botthege, which is just across the street from the B&B. And I can understand why.. the restaurant is a great complimentary to the place. Though best to book in advance to get the alfresco table :) And I ended my first night, at a local bar which had a live band -and great cocktails... Another amazing restaurant with a cavernous atmosphere is Oi Mari, a pizza parlour - great value for money.
Not everything is sassi like - for those who may want to do some usual shopping, and also enjoying the usual modern tapestry, there is the option of the new town round the corner.
But if you came to see a miracle, and waking up to one everyday - stay in the sassi area. Stay in Fra-i-Sassi. It restored my faith in miracles and God's creation x
