was looking forward to this, but it is being renovated inside so you can't get anywhere close with the fencing all around! all the doors were open for the builders but still couldn't get a glimpse in! looks like its under work for at least several weeks if not more

This building is undergoing renovation, but the Romanesque exterior is well worth seeing. Great sculptural details.

It´s nothing from other world, but is a really sympathic cathedral, well located! One of the important things you must visit in Matera, or if you don´t like to go inside cathedrals, just seat outside and feel the place!

We are adding this information to save people having to walk the steep street up to the Cathedrale. If you do walk up then go at night when the town below is lit up like a Christmas crib scene.
Interesting little shops on the way selling craft items.

The cathedral was closed for renovations but we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around Matera. A word of caution - we visited on a brilliantly suuny but cool April day, we might have been less impressed if we had been climbing stairs etc in the August heat. We parked on the outskirts of town and walked in (parking was cheap). There are guided tours but we arrived at the wrong time. We did see tours but we were happy to wander through the labyrinth but again be warned that you will be going up and down a lot; good walking shoes, appropriate clothing and a degree of physical fitness are essential. we spent about six hours wandering and saw just a fraction of the town.
