Staying here is certainly a memorable experience and gives you something of a sense of place - although (thankfully!) a touch too much luxury to truly understand what it must have been like. The candlelit bathroom is particularly delightful. Breakfast was delicious and served in an old rock carved church. The whole experience was absolutely worth it for one night - but I have to say that I wouldn’t have wanted to stay longer. The rooms are just too dark to be able to spend a lot of time in them - and if you open the doors you get psssers by staring in. Finding it was a challenge even with the very helpful directions and photos provided, and we did use the valet parking so we didn’t have the hassle of moving the car. Take light bags and be prepared for a huge amount of steps.
Matera is a fascinating town. If you have time, do a guided tour of the Rupestrian churches in the Murcia national park first.More
