just amazing!

a real feeling of back to early middle ages, however with great comfort, sofisticated, TV free (but free and good WIFI), great breakfest (what for Italy is a rarity); no serial&boring modern rooms as in most hotels nowadays, each room (cave) is unique
easly accessible from Bari airport by rented car 8about 50 min), easy parking without parking fees, easy to walk around (funny to get lost and found in the small ways and tones of staires)

Italy but uncrowded! (nowadays almost impossible if one think in Florence, Venice, Rome, which are great but disturbing crowded and common place) - enjoy as long as it is "undiscovered"!

Great food and wine and very sympathetic local people

Europe for insiders!

There are hotels… then there are fancy hotels… and then there are hotels that are truly special and unforgettable. Hotels that aren’t just a base to explore but that are actually part of the experience, part of the fabric of your trip. That’s exactly what Sexantio Le Grotte della Civita is – part of the experience of visiting this stunning and truly unique area of Italy. Something so special that perfectly blends in with the vibe of the area and that you will remember for a very long time to come.
The staff are wonderful and ever so professional and they go out of their way to make your whole experience truly unforgettable. We were upgraded to a superior cave which we are ever so thankful for and which made our (ninth) anniversary one will not forget.
After the very quick check-in, we were taken to our cave. We opened the door with a giant iron-cast key and what we saw beyond it…. we just could not believe our eyes. All the pictures you see on the internet do not prepare you for quite how beautiful and romantic this place is. Never thought a cave could be so snug, and perfect. Our cave was arranged over three communicating caves.... All candle-lit, simply and tastefully decorated not to interfere with the rustic feel of it all. And yet, with all the (subtle) luxury you could desire: a stunning large roll top bath, under-floor heating, excellent Wi-Fi, locally woven linens, ancient looking wooded cabinets, dimmed/very discreet lighting and candles everywhere. This is a dream come true and I cannot imagine anywhere more romantic to spend an anniversary.
Breakfast – abundant and fresh, all produced locally – is served in a the 13th century excavated rock church. (the 18 caves are arranged around it on three different levels)
We visited in November and I would say it is the best time to visit (you can also get better deals on the caves. We got an excellent deal by playing around with our dates). In summer it gets seriously hot and the town really has no shade, plus it gets very busy with day trippers from nearby Puglia. There were very few visitors around when we were there and the place was just a joy to discover.
Don’t make the mistake of dedicating this place just one day/night – we stayed three nights, took our time to visit the rock hewn churches, the underground cisterns (I Sassi di Matera got their UNESCO accreditation thanks to the inhabitants’ ingenious way of collecting rain water – in a region that in the summer does not get much rain if at all - via terracotta pipes and storing it in huge underground cisterns), the many wonderful restaurants (the food that Basilicata has to offer is so different from the rest of Italy, this region takes great pride in their cheeses and meats and olive oils and the variety of spices they use). You are in for a real gastronomic treat.
Ah and don’t miss the Crypt of the Original Sin just outside town, with its cycle of frescoes dating back to the 9th century AD. Incredible.
Just take time to wonder the Sassi, the alleyways, soak it all up. This is like no place on earth. A truly unforgettable experience.
The world is so big and wonderful and we love to explore – which means we tend to never go back to the same place, no matter how much we love it. BUT – I am already thinking, maybe, just maybe… we could return for another anniversary at some point. It would be a dream.

We arrived on a very rainy and wet evening in October. It was not very easy to find the place, but once we found it we were amazed. The whole Sassi area of Matera is fantastic, and staying in one of the caves of Sextantio is an experience you will never forget.
The cave was lit by candles and some discrete lamps. The bathroom had a good shower, but it would have been nice to have a bathtub since the weather was cold and damp. Apparently some of the standard caves have only a shower, while others have only a bathtub. It would have been nice to be able to choose. However there was a huge bottle of bath foam that was of no use.
The wifi was excellent and we really enjoyed our stay.
In the morning an excellent breakfast was served in another cave!
For staying more than one night a better reading light would be nice. But apart from that the cave was really pleasant and cozy. And don't miss the museum of contemporary sculpture, which is situated in similar caves not far from Sextantio!

During a 3 week trip through southern Italy we stayed at a number of great hotels, but this one is truly unique! The caves are luxurious, the breakfasts are one of the best we experienced and the Internet connection was fast! The city itself is an explorer's paradise. If your in the south of Italy, don't miss this one.

Room Tip: Room 13 is huge (5 rooms in total), has lots of natural light including a balcony.

We had some difficulties to find this pretty place, because the red sign "Sextantio" is so shy and small on the wall that you drive by...
...but once you are there it's a world of its own and we can warmly recommend it.
The rooms are really within "cave homes" and restoration has been done in a wonderful and detail-minded way.
Old wooden doors, beautiful bathtubs, nothing but natural materials, lots of candles: Every single piece in the rooms has been chosen with good taste and true love for ancient surroundings and "the real thing". So the ambiance is simply magic and quiet and peace reign the place. You won't be disturbed by any noise - like of a humming fridge in the room - , you'll only hear birds sing if you open the door.
It's luxury in a very special way. We loved it and would pay the (rather high) prices again.
Our children (10 and 13 years old) would have liked to stay another night.
Before I forget: Breakfast was excellent and the service friendly and helpful at all times.

Room Tip: If you can't imagine to sleep in a cave (with tons of stone all around you), make sure to ask fo...

Candles and subdued lighting added to the ancient feel and for a few days we lived as the generations gone past - but with the added bonus of underfloor heating and running water! A lovely hotel in a fascinating Unesco location. Well recommended if history and culture are your forte.

What an amazing place to stay! I regularly stay in historic places/castles but have never been anywhere like this.

We were greeting with a warm smile and the staff could not have been more helpful throughout the stay. The atmosphere in our cave was amazing and I liked the fact it did still have modern comforts ( the underfloor heating took me by surprise!) but without losing any of the charm.

I am a very picky eater but still found enough to eat at breakfast and we were left fresh fruit in the room everyday.

The hotel was is a good place for visiting the Sassi, though we were glad we had also hired a car to visit a bit further afield.

I know they have plans to further develop the hotel and I would love to visit a few years to see how it has changed

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
