We spent three nights a Casastella. What a wonderful experience to stay in this restored Sassi house with a breathtaking view of the valley from our window. Manuela and her husband are both artists and you can see their attention to detail, their creativity, and their artistry in every aspect of Casastella. We loved Matera and were very moved by its history. We did a half day tour with Antonio, recommended and arranged by Manuela (the owner) and it was so educational., interesting, and enjoyable. The B & B was very convenient and miraculously we always found parking in front. Manuela served a lovely breakfast...and we were totally comfortable during our stay. Our stay in Matera was wonderful--we loved the food, the people, and the town--and all of this was made better by our stay at Casastella.

We spend three nights at the B&B Casastella in Matera. A wonderfully restored place close to the Sassi in Matera. You will stay in an old building with a stunning bathroom that has been featured in multiple magazines. Our stay was fantastic, the owner is very accommodating, the B&B is close to all the sights and the rooms are breath-taking. All this is topped with a great breakfast every morning - you can't ask for much more. Enjoy your stay at this magnificent place.

It was such a pleasure staying with Manuela and Franco at their Casastella B&B. This is probably one of the best B&B's we have ever stayed in!

Reaching Casastella by car is very easy and so is parking, which is very positive compared to staying in the actual sassi themselves. The location of Casastella is very good, with great views from all the rooms over the valley, and it is only about an easy five minute walk to the sassi.

The whole B&B has been restored extremely well, with a lot of attention to detail and originality. The rooms as well as the public area are all very clean and well maintained. Breakfast was very good, and this B&B certainly offers very good value for money.

We also enjoyed very much one of the restaurants recommended by Manuela, namely Ristorante Francesca, so we also recommend that restaurant very much.

Overall, we just loved our visit to Matera, thanks also to our wonderful stay at Casastella. We will definitely stay here again when we go back to Matera.

Room Tip: Consider staying at the downstairs suite, which has an amazing and very original bathroom.

After spending the last two weeks jetting about Italy visiting lots of wonderful places, Matera and especially Casastella B&B was a clear stand out. A welcoming reception, totally one of a kind accommodation & a magical town. The only (very slight) downside for us was that although the breakfast was lovingly put together it was a little to sweet for us. Everything else was absolutely perfect. I'd recommend a stay at Casastella to anyone.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Pagliera Suite & were pleased with our choice. It doesn't have an en suite...

What can I say about this place? It is exceptional! I just wish I could have stayed longer than 1 night. The owner, Manuela, made me feel right at home from the moment I stepped foot in the door. She was such an incredible host and made sure I ate well, saw everything I needed to see, made me laugh so much and made my experience in Matera very special. Thank you Manuela!

Actually staying in a converted "sasso" was quite amazing - and once you have the opportunity to step foot outside and actually see what the place used to be, you can truly appreciate how special Casastella really is.

From the moment you walk in the door - you walk into a home, not a B&B.. and that was something I was not expecting. I came to Matera on my way from Puglia to Calabria to check out the Sassi (which are definitely a must see) and only wish I could have stayed longer, as Matera has a lot to offer in the heart of the Basilicata region.

Do yourself a favour and stay here - you won't regret it. I look forward to coming back.. Alla prossima!

We turned up to Matera without knowing much about it, we arrived at B&B Casastella, and even with their limited English abd our limited Italian, we were able to communicate effectively. We had intended on staying one night, but after spending only a couple of hours here, decided to stay two nights. We were here in May 2012 as part of our honeymoon, travelling Italy for about 6 weeks. Matera is amazing, and certainly at the top of our faves in Italy, and this B&B was a great place to stay. Very friendly family running it, very clean and comfortable room with great views. Breakfast was nice and filling and we felt extremely welcomed throughout our time there. It's very close to everything, and you can park for free right outside the front door. Matera is a must see in Italy, as is staying at B&B Casastella!

Beautiful restored cave dwelling adjusted for a comfortable and quiet stay, just at the border of the historic zone. Very friendly reception by Manuela and son Paulo. Easy to find by car and one of the few places with parking possibilities in the Matera historic area. We had a room at the first lower level and the large bathroom built in a converted watertank. The lowest level room had no occupants, so the bathroom was all ours. The rooms were dry and well climatized, kingsize bed, great view over the reservation area on the otherside of the canyon. Like in other cave wellings the morning sun shone right to the rear wall and onto our bed. Beautifully presented and delicious breakfast. Manuela organised a private tour of the cave sites through an agency and afterwards we wandered several hours through the old city. Our photos are standard angle.
