“The complete deal”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

At regular intervals over the past three years I have visited The Red Lion with eager anticipation, tempered by doubt the delight of previous experiences couldn't possibly be matched. However, with each successive visit, I have yet to be disappointed. The food has always been exceptional, and the kitchen remains as consistent as ever. There is now a core staff that is knowledgeable, attentive and charming, and the atmosphere exudes relaxed efficiency, while retaining the genuine feel of a country pub.

If that's not enough, there is now the Troutbeck Guest House to provide an excuse to spend the night in East Chisenbury. What must have been a rather unprepossessing post-war bungalow, has been transformed into an elegant accommodation consisting of five bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms and wooden decks overlooking the River Avon ( a lot narrower here than in Stratford). The beds are sublimely comfortable and the decor elegant and tasteful. What's more, the kitchen at The Red Lion invests just as much care in providing breakfast. Having been lucky to travel the world for much of my adult life, I've never had better Eggs Benedict anywhere, each constituent part perfect.

Fortunately, home in Bath is only an hour away, but I would travel the length of the country to experience this little bit of heaven in rural Wiltshire.

“Great steak!”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

My husband and I went to the Red Lion last night to celebrate our anniversary and we were thoroughly impressed with the food, setting and service. We shared the steak served with super chunky chips and it was delicious, the best steak we've had in a long time. We also had the cheeseboard which is set out left to right from the milder to the stronger cheeses. Again, this was delicious!

The food is high quality and it's nice that they tell you where it has been sourced locally. It had a really lovely atmosphere and has kept it's pub charm - a nice balance between dining and the traditional pub with locals enjoying a drink at the bar in their wellies. All the staff were really helpful and made great recommendations for wine.

We will definitely be going back to try their other delightful dishes and we will be recommending friends to go too.

“Ice in drinks!”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

Please bar staff do ask the customer if they would like ice in with drinks, I ordered a ginger beer which came with 5 ice cubes bearing in mind that the beverage was chilled in the first place!, is this the norm in most pubs or should it have been up to me to say that I would not like ice with my drink. enjoyed are meal in a very relaxed country pub.

“post Christmas pub lunch treat”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

The Red Lion is a lovely classic English pub with really friendly efficient staff. We really liked the decor - big comfortable sofas (newspapers provided), nice long bar with plenty of bar stools. They have done it up very well but avoided making it too chic and loosing the warm pub atmosphere.

The daily changing menu is very appealing and they also ofer usual staples of sandwiches, sheperd's pie and home made burgers for those not feeling too adventurous or in need of good comfort food. We started with delicious homemade chicken liver pate - delicious, and served with toasted brioche.

I had the fish of the day, hake with mussels in delicious sauce, which was very well cooked and although pricey (£20) it was worth it. THe others had burgers, cooked exactly as they requested, with delicious home made chunky chips and the shepherd's pie, plenty of it and very tasty. Sadly no room for puddings which looked delicious.

Perfect luch spot after a good long walk in the Wiltshire countryside. They have accomodation which looks really nice, so I would recommend a night away here to beat the January blues!
