We couldn't fault the hotel. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Bedroom was spot less. We enjoyed our breakfasts and the bread and fruit were delicious and fresh. Location was excellent also and restaurants nearby

The location of the hotel is very good. It's very close to historical places. Staff are friendly and helpful. Also, we didn't feel unsafe at the hotel at all. I can only say that breakfast is expensive.

We booked this hotel 6 months in advance, requesting a premier room for 6 nights with a balcony that received the optimum sun.
We had read the Tripadvisor reviews in advance, noting a handful of very good rooms, also the one with consistently bad reviews, room 609. My wife wondered whether we should stipulate we did not want that one, but I thought it would be bad manners to do that, reasoning that booking so far ahead and for 6 nights the hotel would have the integrity and the principle to give us an acceptable one.
Big mistake, huge! When we arrived at reception, we were asked to pay in advance.Only when we had done so, did the two less than engaging receptionists disclose that we had been assigned room 609. Disbelieving, we declined it.They then asked us, not unreasonably, to see the room first. Reviews in 2017 and 2018 reported that the room was small, tired and dark, in need of refurbishment, with a sewage smell from the patio drain, and reviewers were unable to understand how it was being marketed as a premier room.
When we saw it, clearly nothing had changed. No evidence whatsoever of refurbishment, and a room I would not have paid money for as a standard room. The so called balcony was got to by an unattractive parapet literally a yard wide all along, in need of whitewash and with a straggle of electrical wires running along it, the patio was the size of a postage stamp, and would have had very little sun.
We returned to reception and asked if room 701 was available. A receptionist confirmed room 701 was a superior room, but had no balcony. This will probably come as something of a surprise to all those reviewers who frequently praise 701’s lovely wide balcony with a lot of sun, but if reception are to be believed, who clearly have problems with room numbers. We named other rooms that had come out well.” All fully booked!”. Yeah, sure.
Looking back through reviews over the years, this hotel has got form in telling people anything in order to foist this room on guests, as they did to us. One reviewer even invited the staff to check their own website that showed there was alternative availability when they denied there was any, but they declined.
There was clearly no point in us trying to discuss matters usefully with the hotel staff, so we walked out, having demanded a full refund of our payment first. Thankfully, we quickly found significantly better accommodation in equally well situated locations, though the Catalonia Excelsior left a nasty taste in the mouth for the rest of the holiday.

Room tip: Avoid room 609.

Location of this hotel is very good and central, just off Placa de Ajuntament, meaning everything is reachable by foot. Choose room as high as possible as there is no sound proof. Our room #602 was reasonable modern, although, it lacked very basic things: lights and storage place.

Double bed was big and had comfortable mattress, but had only one big shared itchy blanket and basic sheet. So no duvets nor proper covers to fully cover the blanket. No reading lights either, so when woken up by clearly heard sounds like walking and speaking from corridor and next door rooms, do not think you would be able to read. Nor watching TV unless you’re Spanish as it didn’t have any English channels.

Bathroom was good size but that’s about it. Door was saloon type without any lock nor possibility to even close it. Shower was inside bath, and without mat it was deadly slippery. Lights were very dim, no magnifying mirror, water pressure bad and temperature constantly changed. There was only one hook on the wall installed upside down making it impossible to hang towels.

Balcony door did not close and electricity switch where you place key card to get electricity dropped to floor. Neither one of these faults were fixed during our 5-day stay although reported them to reception on the first morning. Minibar was totally empty but gave opportunity to store own drinks into it, which was a must, as the hotel bar was open only 3 hours a day, 8-11 pm.

Breakfast, however, was the biggest disappointment. It was buffet style in far too small room. Few tables were always empty and had “reserved” signs on them while other guests had to eat in the lobby. I asked can I also reserve a table but was told no. Coffee machine was constantly not working.

All in all, I truly think you are better off in other hotel.

Room tip: as high as possible in the end of corridor, or preferable in another hotel
