“A great place to stay”
Reviewed August 8, 2010

The Astoria Palace is a great place to stay. Its situated centrally and is a great base from which to explore the city. As the other reviews suggest, the rooms are dated but if your hotel is just a place to sleep then you won't even notice. Use the metro to get around the city and visit the beach, buy a ticket for 10 trips to make your life easy. Valencia is a beautiful place and this is a great hotel from which to see it all.

I followed the advice from wellensian 1 Jun 2010 and got a room with a wonderful panoramic view over the city which was truly a delight. We loved spotting the landmarks, comparing the wealth of architecture and watching the flocks of swifts flying right outside our window.
The room and ensuite were spotless and roomy with a large flat screen TV and the complimentary water in the fridge was replaced every day, a bonus as the tap water in Valencia tastes terrible.
For breakfast, which was on the top floor of the hotel with more great views, there was a huge range of options, including fresh decaffeinated coffee. Breakfast was served till 11am which suited us very well given our late nights due to Valencians staying out till the early hours of the morning, especially with the free cultural events held in July which tend to start at midnight.
If you eat in the square of the hotel, beware that the beautifully lit fountain though magical, is switched off at 10.30pm making it soul-less and dark. The food quality of the expensive Nederland restaurant on the hotel square was very poor - we had our best meals for €10.99 menu del dia on the road Cerrajeros a few minutes walk from the hotel.
One problem we had was that the function suite was above our room and a wedding function kept us awake on the Sat night till 3am as the staff were dragging tables to clear them away. We had to phone reception twice to complain, however, the management gave a discount off our bill for the inconvenience.
The air conditioning sometimes did not feel cool enough but we did not ask reception about it.
Don't use the tourist office on the corner of Poeta Querol and Calle Barcas - their info was poor, and I understand that the other one on Plaza de la Reina is far better.
Also make sure you don't keep your room key-card next to your mobile phone as it wipes the information.
I was surprised that the hotel had no sauna or pool and the 2 free computers to check emails were appallingly slow
But the hotel location is perfect for exploring all parts of the city by foot and public transport, the staff service very goo, the huge breakfast kept us going till evening and the panoramic views made us feel connected to this great city at all times.
I would definitely stay in this hotel again

We enjoyed 5 days at this hotel. It was very well situated being close to the Metro, tourist sites, shops etc. but tucked down a side street away from the noise and bustle of the city. The staff couldn't do enough for us and were very friendly and helpful. Our baggage had gone astray and they were very concerned and chased the airline for us. This was helpful as we don't speak Spanish.

Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious with everything we could have wanted including a safe and bottled water at no extra cost. We struggled to control the air conditioning but we didn't ask for help so we can't really complain about that. The bathroom was clean and well equiped.

There were shutters as well as curtains at the windows and we slept very soundly as this made the room completely dark. I enjoyed the breakfasts although my husband was given hard, burnt sausages on two occasions.

The view from the breakfast room (9th floor) was great and the reception area and bar were very elegant. The bar staff were friendly and professional and the bar area was comfortable and relaxing.

Our stay in Astoria Palace was a delight, starting with the location, walking distance to everywhere, beautiful fountain 3 restaurants in the square right on front of the hotel. The staff is warm and polite, we asked for a non–smoking room, they have an entire non–smoking floor. The room was big and clean, complimentary water in the mini–bar was a pleasant surprise and a nice touch... it was actually replaced every day since we stayed there. The room was very quiet even though our windows faced the square where people sat in the outside cafe till late.
On our last day we had a late train to Barcelona, so when we checked out at 12 pm, we were able to leave out luggage in the locker room until 4:30, I want to say it again, the staff was very nice and helpful!
Overall a great experience, I would stay there again and recommend it to anyone traveling to Valencia.

The hotel currently offers a stay of 2 or more nights for a very competitive price. Service was friendly and attentive from start to finish; one porter has been there for 46 years!

Location: Ideally situated in a small square with a fountain and tables under a vast tree outside the neighbouring café, yet within 2 minutes' walk of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Valencia's main square.

Public areas: Large lounge with a bar in the corner, ideal for quick meetings or relaxation. The "star of the show" is the 9th floor dining room with panoramic views over the city, including the cathdral and the Micalet, Santa Catalina tower and the Palace of the Marques de Dos Aguas. The adjoining breakfast room is much modernised and offers an excellent breakfast selection of fruits, cold meats and cheeses, bread, croissants and pastries, and features miniature coffee machines with choice of strength and type.
As befits a hotel of distinction the corridors are wide and well furnished, although the carpets look a little tired and the lifts take forever to appear at busy times.

Rooms: Always ask for an exterior room (those with a second number of 0 or 1 all face the outside world). The rooms on higher floors offer panoramic views over the city rooftops, and the lower numbers (eg. 801-808) face the old centre and all the monuments also overlooked by the restaurant. Rooms are on the large side carpeted and with good dark furniture, large wardrobe space and marble bathrooms.
If I have one criticism it would be the difficulty of adjusting the water temperature to avoid an unpleasant shower; the tiniest adjustment seemed to send the water from boiling to stone cold, and it took around 5 minutes to get it right each morning.

That apart, I would thoroughly recommend the hotel for its location, good service and general comfort (with a panoramic view if you're lucky).

Firstly, Valencia is a wonderful city and the Astoria is right in the heart of it. Wandering round in an aimless manner, you come across beautiful buildings down alleys. , friendly people and wonderful food.

The Astoria is well appointed though you can wait a while for a lift. Reasonable sized bedroom and bathroom and helpful staff. Got an amazingly cheap deal through Venere which did not include breakfast but surrounded by cafes or try the fantastic baker's opposite.

If driving, it is complicated getting there (easier getting away - it is the way the one way system works) and i suggest you either use a good satnav or print out a route from the Michelin routefinder which works well. Car parking is 40metres away, £17 per day which is not bad for a staffed city centre park.

I also recommend the Lonely Planet Guide to Valencia - we followed its advice for where to go, eat, drink, etc. and it proved amazingly accurate.
