There are not many restaurants where the waiters try to do the place out of business, well, not deliberately anyway. But the one here did. Having studied the menu over our 2 Euro glasses of wine (not at all bad), we reeled off a list of the tapas dishes we wanted. The waiter raised a handsome eyebrow and said, “Are you sure you want all that?” Seeing our bemused expressions, he went on, “Maybe you just have one salad, one patas bravas, one manchego and one red sausage, egg and potatoes and see.” We agreed and he was right, of course. The trouble with tapas in Valencia is that it’s not really tapas, rather each plate is a meal in itself. Anyway, it was all excellent.
Escalones is an attractive, traditional looking place in a pedestrian street in the shadow of the beautiful La Lonja. Not only are the food and wine good, it’s a perfect place for sitting and just watching the world go by. And the waiters are charming and dishy – and surely bring more business, not less.
