Me and my friends were over in Valencia for a short holiday, and when we asked the concierge at our hotel to recommend us a nice restaurant, we got Raco del Turia. We were very excited about visiting this place, since the concierge highly recommended it, as well as some good reviews on Trip Advisor!
Once we got at the restaurant, we were greeted at the door, and taken to our table. We liked the decor of the restaurant as it was typically Spanish. Whilst browsing the menus (where we realised that most items were ridiculously expensive), we ordered some beverages. My friends got Sangria, which had ice cubes in it and thus made the actual thing lose most of its taste. I got a GLASS of wine, bt once poured at the table, it seemed more of a taster rather than a glass!
We were served bread at the table, which although we had seen on the menu that u had to pay for this, we thought it was being given as a treat since the waitress just came up with the plate and put 2 slices of bread on each side plate without even asking if we would have liked some!
For starters, we ordered 2 of the Prawn Carpaccio, and fried croquettes. The Prawn Carpaccio was very nice, although the wild mushroom oil perhaps a bit too powerful in taste to go with something like prawn. My other friend did not eat it as hers was heavily immersed in oil!
As for Mains, 2 of us had the half-portion Sirloin. We have ordered it Medium to Well, however it was served Rare! We called the waitress and told her about it, so she apologised and took them to the kitchen. Once these were brought back, we were still dissatisfied by the quality of the meat. Both meats were still undercooked, and the quality was hopeless. The meat had too much fat throughout, very untypical of sirloin. It was also very chewy and tasteless. To make matters worse, we later realised that all the chef did, was put the meat and fries on new plates and put them in the oven as such. I had already seasoned my fries with salt and pepper before the plates were taken in, and when brought back, my friend commented that her fries were too salty and had pepper over it, and to our dismay, we realised what had happened. This was completely unacceptable for such a remarkable restaurant. We managed to conclude why the fries was uneatable!
Once we finished our food (just beacuse we were hungry!) we asked for the bill as all we wanted was to leave this place! To our horror, we saw a charge for 3 persons for the bread. We called the waitress and she explained that it was written on the menu that you pay for bread, and this is a custom throughout Spain. However we replied back that we should have been asked if we wanted bread in the first place, and not have it dumped on our side plates, and then being asked to pay for it! What a silly way to make money!! This was taken off our bill, and then we just left, awfully disappointed by the turn out of what was planned to be a delightful evening!
The only thing I want to add is that the waitress (I apologise but I do not know the name) taking care of our table was smiling at all times, and was helpful throughout. Although it is a cute small restaurant, the food we witnessed makes me not recommend this restaurant at all!
