Amazing views of Calpe and surrounding area. A fairly easy climb, but good footwear is needed. Although you can make it half way in flip flops!!

“The best view of calpe...but you have to break sweat to get it!”
Reviewed November 9, 2012 via mobile

You can't visit Calpe without visiting Calpe's main feature..The Ifach...or Calpe rock. It is one of the most dramatic sights I have seen and looks very different depending on which beach you view it from. It is a nature park so you have to respect that if you decide to climb it, but if you do climb it you will get the best views of Calpe and the surrounding coastline. A few tips:

1) It is not easy. Wear decent shoes with a good grip.
2) If you are not reasonably fit. Do no try to climb it.
3) In summer.....go early..and avoid the worst of the mid day heat.
If you do not want to climb all the way up you can still follow a path that zig zags half way up the rock to a tunnel that goes through the rock. You will still have excellent views.....however the tunnel and beyond are much more dangerous and to enjoy the climb beyond you should have good shoes and have the confidence to enjoy it.

“Natural beauty”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

Just look at the picture, it says it all. People travel from all over Spain and indeed Europe to see the Penyan. It has featured in tourist advertising for Calpe, Benidorm and even Spain.

“Amazing views but treacherous”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

I've been to the top of the Penon most years since I was twelve, but either I'm getting old (I am, that was 30+ years ago) or the paths have deteriorated. To be fair, it's perfectly safe up to the tunnell, and this is as far as many people go. After the tunnel you will be on loose rocks, polished stone and slopes with nothing between you and several hundred feet drops. There are a few shortcuts which can be really intresting and wouldn't recommend them really at all for families.
If you are confident, and have the right footwear, the view is well worth it. But remember that if you're British, then "Health and Safety" clearly dosen't translate ito Spanish.
