“Great Spanish Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

We asked at the hotel for a recommendation and he sent us down the road to La Rana - just across from the "Tapas Alley". It was a quiet Monday night in february and the three of us were the only guests in the couple of hours we were in the place.

The owner/waiter was really nice explaining everything and when the cheap house wine was unavailable he replaced with a more expensive bottle for the same price.

My main was an entrecoute steak with a sauce containing ham and it was truly delicious. Desert and coffee was had too and it worked out at pretty good value of ~€30 each.

I will return the next time I am in Benidorm.

“Second visit....second to none!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012

We were in Benidorm in November last year and visited La Rana then (I reviewed it back then too), so when we returned to Benidorm last week we just had to go back and visit Chus and his brothers who run the restaurant. Once again we were treated to great food, great service and we even ended up staying behind after closing time and having a drink with Chus. My partner and I have been taking Spanish lessons recently so between our ‘Spanglish’, his broken English and using quite a lot of Google translate, we managed to get by. I left this time feeling almost like friends, that’s how friendly this place is (if you make the effort!).

I do wonder if some of the previous reviews are written by the sort of British traveller who dislikes the locals for speaking a different language, and goes to Benidorm for the ‘Red Lion’ pub and a nice home style Sunday roast. Spanish food IS different, that’s exactly why I seek out places like La Rana.

I have posted a picture of our starters and mains. Small starters? Uh uh! and the mains? My steak is the one is the one in the foreground. Now I know it doesn’t look too pretty in the picture but believe me it was delicious, it has the ‘Jabugo’ sauce on it. For those that couldn’t be bothered to ask, Jabugo is a fine Iberico ham, a Spanish delicacy, and the fried eggs are Qail eggs, beautiful.

No, La Rana isn’t cheap and no, it is never going to win a Michelin star for its food presentation but the food is filling, good quality, freshly cooked and very tasty. We had to sit on the terrace on this visit because the local supermarket staff had booked all the indoor seating for a night out. If the place is a treat good enough for the locals, then it’s good enough for me.

Having been there twice now, for me Benidorm is just about exhausted, but rest assured if I ever do go back then visiting La Rana will be top of my list.

“Fantastic food, fantastic welcome.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 12, 2011

Posted this a month ago in English AND Spanish on the same review but TA said "no" and deleted the English part!!! So here we go again......

Tucked away in a little courtyard in the old town of Benidorm, La Rana (The Frog) is run by three brothers. The food is freshly cooked, the portions are large and the friendly welcome by Chus (pronounced Choose) was second to none. This place is fantastic and serves authentic Spanish food (a note to 'Brits abroad', you won't find burger, egg and chips here!). Expect to pay £50+ for a 3 course meal for two, so it may be a one off treat if you are on a budget, although the starters are huge so you may want to stick to a main and desert if you aren't starving! We loved this place, I can't recommend it enough and we will be back!
