“VERY POOR”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2011

I have just returned from Benidorm we stayed at Gran Hotel Bali for 5 nights B&B.

I have visited Benidorm once before we picked this hotel as it seemed to be abit fancy we wanted a hotel with a spa and were impressed by the photos on travel republic.

Upon arrival we found check in was v slow and I have to agree with the other comments the staff by in large were rude and spoke v little English the receptionist directed us to room 1240 when in fact it was room 1226 .

The room didn't look like the photos on travel republic ,however it was reasonably nice and clean worryingly though an hour after arrival the maid arrived to clean the room we tried to explain to her we had just arrived and the room did'nt need cleaned , she didn't understand us , and the room wasn't cleaned again nor the bedding or towels changed until our 4th day. we even had to ask at reception for toilet roll when we ran out it took 3 members of staff 2 hrs to supply us with toilet roll.
The ceiling in the bathroom was quite shoddy with exposed pipes and the glass door to the bathroom hadn't been cleaned in quite some time as there was lots of finger prints over it.
The TV didn't have English channels as advertised .
The pool area was clean and we had no trouble getting a sun lounger.
The breakfast area was large and the food was quite nice we had eggs most mornings.
There are only a few lifts for the second building and waiting for a lift was abit of a pain as other people often walked in front of us to get into the lift, we were sometimes waiting for up to 5 mins at a time , i dread to think what it would be like in the height of the tourist season.
The two glass outdoor lifts were closed most of the week due to high winds .
We used the Spa once the staff were friendly guests have to pay 7 euro to use the sauna/ jaquzzi and 6.50 to use the gym .

The area itself is quite far out from Benidorm town centre a taxi was anything from 9 euros to 11 euros , the bus was 1 euro 30 bus number 12 and 41 take you in to the centre they run approx every 20 mins , we got off the bus at the bowling alley , the bus drivers again were extremley rude to us and unhelpful they wouldn't/couldn't tell us which stop to get off at one in particular was quite threatening to us and shouted at us in spanish and shook his fists at us and rolled his eyes at us when we asked would a number 12 bus bring us back to the hotel , a spanish speaking english tourist stepped in and helped us
There is a supermarket opposite, and a few bars and restaurants close by not a great selection we had lunch in nearby Yago and the sandwich came out with broken glass in it ????!!!! The Gin Pub was lovely we had dinner there a few nights and i would recommend it also has Sky sports shows English football games.
The hotel would be best suited to people who want a relaxing holiday away from hustle and bustle.
I would not stay at this hotel again nor would i recommend it to anyone ,it was too far away from the centre of Benidorm and the overall feeling we got from the hotel staff was that they did not want English/Irish Tourists.

We have just returned from a trip to the Gran Bali, there was 4 adults and 4 teenagers. The booking in process was very fast and rooms were ready which was great as we were there by 11.30. We had rooms in the smaller building and i have to say they were very spacious and cleaned daily. We didnt have a balcony but the windows opened wide which helped in the heat at night as the air conditioning really didnt do anything. We had 3 very fussy eaters and one vegetarian and there was always something to eat although it wasnt very warm unless you went as soon as it opened, but to be honest we have been doing all inc for ten years and the food staying hot seems to be an issue in them all. The all inc programme really lets th hotel down as although we had a good time it definatly does not provide a 4 star all inc service. Dont be put off going but if you know the score it helps. There is no icecream other than at meal times, you cannot have slush, peanuts, cocktails on the all inclusive and the snacks are extremly poor as there is one option, ham and cheese together in a sandwich and plain crisps, nothing else. This also ends at 8.15 so theres no option of a late bite to eat if you have been out. You will need to get a bus to the new town, the number 12 takes you there for one euro 20 cents each and you catch it at the side of the hotel, out the doors and turn right, bus stop is at the end of the road. Benidorm is a fantastic place with masses of things to do, shops to look around. Mundamar ,the dolphin park is a must although expensive, 90 euros for a family of 4 but very enjoyable. I would not go back to this hotel simply because you dont get value for money and guests who are self catering seem to be valued by the staff and served promtly were the all inc queue just seems to get bigger and bigger until someone complains and then another member of staff appears. Dont let the bar staff send you away on your last day if you have a late checkout, tha all inc ends at 12 mid day but they wouldnt serve us any drinks when the bar opened at 10,, they just said it had ended. I went to reception and complained and then all appeared ok and we were served until 12. This is an honest review after a good holiday but if you go knowing the facts then you wont be dissapointed.

We arrived on the 8th may, reception was helpful and when we went to the room it was very clean with clean towels, sheets etc.
The food was not very good , it has salads and packet soup deserts were the same every night, and we only saw fatty pork, and once had beef and as we were all inclusive we had to queue for the drinks the queue went out the door.
it was very noisy with hen and stag parties. the bar staff would serve the paying guests first but they forget we had paid before we arrived. The drinks were served in plastic cups but glass was given to spanish guests. Water was constantly running down the pipes behind tiles so you cant sleep either with noisy uk guests or the water.

Do not go to this hotel as it is not catered for older Uk guests and food would not be served by rspca. It is about 6 miles from Levante beach and is 12euros in a taxi but 1.30 by bus no 12.

Anybody considering staying at this hotel is making a HUGE mistake ! The people who give positive reviews on the establishment must have previous poor experiences to "big up" this place. I was utterly disgusted at the way both my friend and I were treated throughout the week we stayed there.

On arrival we were literally left in the middle of the road with our cases without being told which hotel was ours, or even taken to the entrance. Obviously this is not the hotel's fault, but still ...

Checking in was also a disaster as the receptionist, although polite at first, spoke not one word of English, so both my friend and I were confused as to where we were to go for food, drinks, and even to get to our room !! The room itself seemed impressive but after further inspection we found that we had to pay for a safe to store any valuables (but we were not told this upon arrival), it was covered in dust pretty much everywhere. The bathroom seemed clean, but was remarkably dark and dingy, and the ceiling was far from an actual 'ceiling'. It was falling apart and we both felt remarkably uncomfortable getting changed, using the toilet, or even showering ! The television was of good quality, but after searching for the British channels that were 'apparently' tuned in, we found they weren't ! The bed-clothes were of poor quality, and my friend even found marks where someone had placed their cups of tea (there is photographic evidence of this). These bedsheets stayed for a few days.

After this, we attempted to find the AI buffet. This proved to not be as easy at seems, after asking help of staff we were told - and rather rudely may I add - that they didn't speak English ! So we attempted to get help of another member/s of staff, to be looked at like we were something they had trodden in ! And the food, once we found it, was of very poor quality, ALL meat was fatty, the bread was stale and could probably dent the wall if I chose to throw it, the cheese smelled of nasty sweaty feet. Only the soup, and various desserts were of average tasting ! It got to the point we were eating out (after spending money on an all inclusive holiday) as the thought of the same, vile tasting food making us physically wretch.

When it came to the bar, the staff were rude, ignorant and very very slow. The hotel obviously have the "2 drinks per person per card" rule for a reason, and as there were only 2 of us, we didn't find this a problem. But after being repeatedly pushed around by other people, who were served first because, from what we could tell, they weren't English, we gave up waiting for AI drinks, and ended up queuing and paying for drinks.

All in all, I could go on for quite a while about this hotel, but there really is too much to say. I was highly disheartened by how we were both treated, and was very much looking forward to coming back to Leeds this morning !!

Room Tip: Just don't go to this hotel !

My partner and I stayed at the Grand Hotel Bali for a short weekend break. We booked a double room all inclusive. The room had twin beds and a balcony which overlooked the pool. There were a few suspicious stains on the walls of the room (not very nice to look at before you go to sleep.) The shower room was fairly clean but dark and dingy, if you looked up to the ceiling you could see through the ceiling boards and enjoy the view of pipes and thick gathered dust whilst showering- not ideal! The balcony door didn't lock and if you looked over the balcony you could see boxers and shoes which people had flung out over their balcony's and into the nets beneath.

The food was fairly poor. Either undercooked/ overcooked/ fatty/ greasy/ or a lack of choice. The salad was probably the best and seemed quite fresh. We decided to eat out on the last night to give us something to look forward to. Also we were not asked to present our swipe card each time we visited the restaurant. You could probably pay for bed and breakfast and get away with eating breakfast, lunch and dinner! People just walked in! The cutlery was always dirty and the waiter's would top up your bottles of water after you left and serve them to someone else. We stood and watched them do this.

The pool was fairly clean. Sun loungers had definitely seen their day. You had to pay deposit of 10 Euros for towels and were given 8 back once returned. No music or entertainment around the pool. Loads of Brits mooning and making chavy noises or shoving one another into the pool fully dressed. No view from the pool at all.

Caught sight of a little entertainment at night- mainly bad singers and people slow dancing. We had to queue for forever to get one drink! The hotel separated the all inclusive guests from the other guests. The all inclusive bar had only two bar staff, the alcohol was very low quality and small measures. There is no point drinking in the hotel and it would just take too long to queue for drinks. You have to queue for aprox 30 mins for each drink. The lounge areas had an odd atmosphere and reminded us of an airport waiting room- the seats were single chairs and looked quite uncomfortable. We mainly opted to take the bus to the Rincom at nights and walk along the promenade.

During our stay we heard ample guests complaining about one thing or another. The reception staff did not seem very accommodating to their needs. We were just glad that this had been a cheap last minute weekend getaway and not a 2 week holiday!

Overall the grand hotel bali should only be a low 3 star hotel. The hotel is very tired and is not suitable for anyone expecting a 4 star standard. Please do not visit if this applies to you. With hindsight we would have been better spending more money and getting a nice 5 star hotel.

The hotel looks impressive on arrival and the reception area and smartly dressed staff give the air of an opulent 5-star city hotel. Although we arrived well after midnight, there were drinks in the mini-bar which we were unsure as to whether they were chargeable or part of the AI. Although there are notices stating that they need to be paid for (down in the bar!), we weren't charged for them.

All meals are served buffet style, regardless of whether you are B&B , half board or AI. There's plenty of choice at each meal with 'show-cooking' on occasional mealtimes. Drinks are served on production of your room key-card in both the bars and the restaurant, lager is draught in the bars but bottled San Miguel in the restaurant.

The biggest gripe that most people have is the way in which the AI provision is delivered. To have a 60ft long bar and restrict the AI customers, the majority of those staying in the hotel, to the end 4ft of it seems ridiculous. I can see why they do it, in terms of making sure that customers get served in order, rather than the most bolshy pushing to the front and causing resentment, but surely they could have more than one queue and move them away from the draughty doorway to the pool.

At 8.15pm, the AI in the 'daytime' bar ends and all AI customers have to move to a seperate bar. This seems unfair as the entertainment in the AI bar really is terrible. The same blonde Spanish woman warbling through the same 15 tunes every night, just in a different order for a bit of variety! It wouldn't be so bad if she was any good. We saw a Motown act in the Morgan Tavern called 'Timeless'. Our nickname for the AI entertainment was 'Tuneless'!
It was more entertaining getting up early and sitting in reception and watching the head housekeeper being dragged around the marble floor by the floor -polishing machine!!

We aren't the type to hang around the hotel all day, so we usually headed out after breakfast, sometimes returning in time for a late lunch, sometimes opting to stay out until dinner. We took the Monday boat trip to Calpe and had a lovely day! It has to be said that it's a long walk to town and at the end of the week, I had sore feet. I recommend people take the bus to town (and if YOUR other half says it's not that far, don't fall for it!)

In all, the Gran Bali is a nice hotel with a few flaws in the delivery of its AI provision. The views from the 44th floor viewing platform are fantastic, the food is standard mass-catering fayre for the area, catering to a wide variety of tastes.

I think it's a pertinent point that Spanish 4-star seems to be on par with British 3-star and people should be aware of this wherever they book.

We have stayed at the Grand Hotel Bali before, though on a half board basis and had enjoyed both the food and evening entertainment, so thought this time we would stay fully inclusive, WHAT A MISTAKE, don’t get me wrong the room standard was the same (though the main towers rooms are smaller and you do feel quite enclosed on the concrete balcony) and the food was good, but I feel that they haven’t quite understood either the full meaning or what is expected with a fully inclusive deal!
The inclusive drinks, are local drinks and by this I can only presume that they have come from just around the corner, the house wine was disgusting. When at the bar, you are told that if there are paying customers ahead of you will have to wait for them to be served first, dare you ask for a packet of crisps? expect a packet of plain as no other flavours will be available to you, should you have children do not be fooled in to thinking they will be able to have an ice cream included when they want one because you will have to pay for it.
Should there be more than two of you on holiday together (heaven forbid), you will only be allowed a maximum of two drinks on one key, so this would require two or more people going for the drinks, and one large lemonade/coke, or orange juice is classed as two drinks, so again you will only be able to have one.
The entertainment last time wasn’t bad, it was outside on a stage with more than one act a night, this time it had been moved inside (possibly due to the time of year) and only one act per night, looking around the room I was only able to see long faces or people yawning, we had the same act three nights in a row and to call him a club singer is an insult to club singers, on the Friday night they closed the bar to inclusive guests sending us to another bar where yes you guessed it the same bugger was destroying more songs, whilst the paying customer had a new entertainer who was I must say marginally better.
I feel the GRAND HOTEL BALI needs to wake up to the fact, that we, the fully inclusive customers have already PAID for our drinks in ADVANCE, and not treat us as second class guests by making us wait until all others have been served first.
I WILL NOT RETURN TO THE BALI AS A FULLY INCLUSIVE GUEST.

Room Tip: Dont stay in the main tower
