“Don't use Google maps in Pamplona!”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Overlooking the total nightmare of getting there, we arrived with a seriously fed up husband, It is a vast lump of well, concrete, I suppose. Finger print doors are maybe a shade too far and it is very much "men in black" but the staff were lovely. Huge, big room (thanks Mr and Mrs Smith for the cava, bikkys and choc) total absence of wall art but very sleek, bed glorious, bathroom huge excellent , integral and screened and it all worked, loved the electric blinds even though we didn't actually use them, Stylised gardens (wall, lawn, lavender) but very open and spacious with great views - we had missed lunch (thanks Google maps) but got a super Iberico and Manchego and fruit/nut /jelly cubes platter as room service which restored harmony. Husband found the Spa and chilled BUT the signage is poor/dim (bring a torch for the U ground car park!) The restaurant was wonderful even if that night there were only 2 couples, waiter was informative and unintrusive, his wine advice was spot on though husband was slightly startled to have it brought without his sayso! menu was available in(curious sometimes) English and I personally had the best Turbot I've had in a long while, super quiet night's sleep, breakfast was excellent (lots more people -they must have eaten out) buffet style which was permanently replenished and beautifully laid out (do not understand previous reviewers issues with the tea coffee machines, it's" follow the icons") and fabulous selections of teas (that was the hardest part !) I would go again and I would recommend it unreservedly, it is just minimalist so don't expect chintz and fluff !

Booked with Mr and Mrs Smith as their recommend, and their review lived up to our expectations. For a 4 star hotel the room rate was excellent. Hotel defeated our satnav (as with a previous reviewer) but worth finding - follow the town signs for the hotel and not your satnav! If you like minimalist style, this is the place for you. Great style and presentation. We were upgraded and had a huge room with balcony and fantastic picture window views (complete with electric blackout blinds) - room 322 a really great room. Huge and very comfortable bed, 2 Loewe TV's, sitting area to enjoy the views, large bath with views through the room and separate walk-in monsoon shower. Free minibar (non-alcoholic). We were greeted with a bottle of cava and chocolates (Mr and Mrs Smith to thank for that) and enjoyed the rest of our stay so much we considered cancelling our immediate plans to stay another couple of nights, and if it wasn't for the weather, we probably would have!
The whole design and feel of the hotel was exceptionally tasteful - the designer's eye for detail is to be congratulated. For those who like minimalist style this is a boutique hotel to be highly recommended. Despite the rain the views were wonderful and the grounds, when not very wet, would be very pleasant to relax in.
We didn't eat in the restaurants so can't comment. The bar staff were were very accommodating with buckets of ice!
Not completely perfect: although the receptionist at check out was very pleasant, the whole process took 15 minutes for what should have taken 2.
We used the spa facilities twice, but the 1st time, despite checking at reception, there were no lights in the showers, sauna and steam room. The swimming pool is lovely if you like dark, black and minimalist style (which we do) but needs a good clean internally.
We enjoyed Pamplona, and didn't have enough time to explore properly (partly due to the thunderstorms we were enjoying!) and would return to explore more. We enjoyed the walk back from the city along the river and saves walking up the hill to return to the hotel.
From our stay we would give 9/10 - very lucky with the room we were allocated, rooms without balconies might not be so fantastic but we would certainly recommend the hotel to family and friends who enjoy great minimalist, clever design and a very interesting city.

Oh, Alma: Defeater of GPS, coyly hiding amidst verdant fields... How I love you.

So first, the not-so-good: Do not use your GPS to try to find this hotel! It will not work. Apparently, there are TWO Beloso streets, which will leave your poor Garmin giving up the ghost in a very nice, modern housing development about a mile from your final destination. You will get out of your car, frustrated to the point of tears. You will go through many roundabouts trying to find the hotel. You will fail, and find it entirely by accident, seeing a teeny yellow sign which will make you veer sharply to the right onto a steep downward road next to the athletic centre.

And now, the excellent: Once you DO find the AlmaPamplona, you're in for a minimalist-modern treat. Every feature has been designed for maximum comfort and esthetic satisfaction. From the panoramic view-windows in the rooms to the flower arrangements on well-placed antique tables in the public spaces, the curators of this design masterpiece have thought of everything.

The rooms are incredibly spacious; the bed, ridiculously comfortable, and the free mini-bar doesn't hurt either. We didn't eat at the restaurant, so I can't comment on that, but their hot chocolate and coffee were both delicious! We enjoyed simply staring out the picture windows in the lounge, gazing at gorgeous fields, wondering how such a place came to be built in Pamplona.

Don't get me wrong, this hotel isn't perfect. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer a nice room key to the novelty of biometric fingerprint entry. And the hotel is definitely not in the centre of town. Finally, though I found the design and comfort wonderful, my husband, though he loved the place, found it a bit cold.

All that said, the AlmaPamplona is a hotel that made us cancel our plans for the next day so we could spend some quality time with it. Maybe it was the hunt for Alma that made us want to stay longer than we intended, but there's something about her long, lean lines, walls of glass and soft, soft linens that whispers: stay....

Room Tip: Don't try to find this hotel using GPS. Plot out your route on a map before you arrive, or call...

Lovely designer hotel especially if you like minimalist architecture.

Two Loewe TVs in the room, even though we chose the cheapest option.

The beds and bedding were lovely.

The bathroom arrangement wasn't good for sharing. It was open plan. I didn't really fancy watching my friend bathe and we both felt uncomfortable at the lack of privacy. I suppose its fine if you are with a partner but I would not advise sharing with a friend unless you're happy for them to watch you shower or bathe.

Good maid service. She brought fresh towels and dressing gowns and an iron as soon as I asked for it.

Breakfast was quite nice but not 5 star standard. One poor girl run ragged, a coffee machine that was incomprehensible and had to wait an age for service as the waitress was overawed by the amount of work for her. Could do with someone overseeing the dining room and widening the selection of food choices available. If you're a vegan- very poor choice available.

Overall I was impressed with the modernity and style of the hotel but it is a little rough at the edges, which is a shame as this has the potential to be a truly great hotel for Pamplona. Great value for money though.

We stayed in October and there was only one other couple staying in the hotel. Its a little bit out of the way, but in a very quiet location, overlooking fields. On arrival, our fingerprints were taken and were used to gain entry to rooms. A bit a novelty which backfired when we went to use the spa facilities in our dressing gowns and then couldn't gain access to our room! Spa is nice and good facilities in the room including a handy iPod dock / iPhone charger and two tvs. I have to say the combination of the complete blackout blinds and incredibly comfy duvet / pillows meant I had a very comfy and restful sleep. Perhaps that was because there was no one else in the hotel to disturb. It is a 15 / 20 min walk uphill to centre of town.

I'm really disappointed with this hotel. The building has a great design and the rooms are huge and beautiful but the staff of the hotel must think than that's enough to be a 5 star... I stayed at the hotel for business and right from the start at the reception it was clear there was something wrong. Of course the were advised of our arriving, this meeting had a lot of work on its back but when we got there (not a big group of people at a time) the girls on the front desk were anything but kind. Beside, the main meeting room where we had to work that morning was frozen!! while all the guest were arriving they were having problems with the key cards. They are bigger than they should and the scanner have problems reading them BUT this is something that can be easily solved as they have a system to open the door with ones finger print! A modern system that they refused to use for no apparent reason even when they were asked for it to avoid the mentioned problems. The day after breakfast was a real disaster... getting an orange juice and a coffee was science fiction... and some of the staff were asked for them they replay: sorry I don't serve coffee! Well honey, you might not serve coffee but as a guest of a 5 stars hotel I DON'T CARE! just go and find someone that do! at this point I was clear that pro-activity is a completely strange word for the staff and also the willing of have that must be present in any 5 stars service! In addition, the variety of food was really really poor. After the stay at this hotel I started to hate Brownie (to give an example) The "icing on the cake" was that we were kindly asked to leave the hotel at 9 am (all of us, more than 100 people) because FC Barcelona was arriving that day... I honestly can imagine what the manager of the hotel was thinking to do such a thing...
I don't want to end my review without mentioning that in spite of all I said there were people on the staff that were very kind, exactly like you can expect, and I'm sorry I can't mention their names, one of them was a guy from the bar and also the house keeping lady.
I could keep going on the details but I think it's enough. I will not come back, that's for sure!

We booked this for 110 euros for a double without breakfast and were upgraded as there were very few guests. It was very quiet generally but that may be due to the fact that there were very few other guests. There was a lovely deep bath with bulgari smellies, a large room and an i phone/ ipad station. The pliiows were really soft-goose down i think. There was a switch that allowed operation of complete blackout blinds. We had a nice view of the (far off) catherdral. There was no telephone directory so we had no idea what time check out was. There is a nice bar and free use of an apple mac. The pool was small and the steam room wasn´t on when we were there. The spa was a bit bare. There is a bit of a novelty with fingerprint identification to get into the room. We were there out of season and it was very quiet. The hotel is stylish and minimalistic but seems a little stark. A few flowers wouldn´t go amis. The staff spoke english to us and were very helpful. The hotel is about forty minutes walk into the old city of pamplona but you can go most of the way through greenery and enter the old mediaval city through the magdelana bridge (where part of the camino de santiago walk goes) The number 4 bus goes past it . We got a taxi from the bus station for 7 euros 50. It was a very nice stay overall.

Room Tip: we were in room 705 on the third floor which was very nice
