“Clean and convenient”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013

Convenient location to get to by car, and for walking to the Roman Theatre and city centre. Clean modern hotel with helpful staff, good-sized rooms and nice bathrooms. Secure parking available at an additional cost. On a busy road and traffic intersection, so might be noisy at busier times of year. Breakfast adequate by Spanish standards. We booked on line, direct with the hotel: a few days before our arrival we received an email in English giving brilliant directions on how to find the hotel.

The location is great! Only a short walk to the main attractions – the Roman Theatre and the Castle, and very close to the train station and supermarkets such as Lidl and Dia. The room was clean. The staff spoke English.

The rooms don’t have individual AC but a common ventilation system (at least this was the case with our room which is an inner room, not looking onto the main road). Once you turn on the ventilation system (which is individually controlled) awful smell comes out of the ventilation holes (a cigarette-like smell) and the room smells horrible. And even if you don’t turn the ventilation on, the room still smells awful from the previous time it was used. So, our room smelled bad upon arrival and at first we thought that the reason was that it was a smoking-room but it turned out to be the above issue. In the lobby there was a very old computer for a common use but it was impossible to use Internet as the computer was extremely old and slow and you cannot open pages normally. As a whole we expected more from a 3-star hotel. A few days earlier we were in Almeria, in a 2-star hotel which was actually a lot better. Despite everything Los Habaneros is not a bad choice. The positive things are more than the not so positive ones!

My wife and I can recommend this hotel for location and value. The location was excellent for seeing the Roman ruins of Cartagena.

We asked for a room overlooking the gardens, and ours was on the second floor – a large twin room with classy furniture and tall triple-glazed French doors onto a small balcony. Across the road was an old building with nice gardens and a Roman wall. Up the hill to the left side of the hotel there is the road to the seafront. There is also a roundabout nearby, leading to a magnificent train station and a Lidl store. Downhill from the hotel is a Moroccan quarter, a bit down-at-heel but late one night on the way home from the we popped in to a friendly kebab cafe and got a huge mixed kebab, chips and soft drink – 8 euros for the two of us, a real bargain. The Roman “House of Fortune” ruin is near the hotel on this road, and the main shops and restaurants are only a 10-minute walk from the hotel. We used the hotel’s private parking @ 10 euros per day, handy and secure but messy and like a building site.

Our room was comfortable, although the air-con was too cold and didn’t respond to the room temperature change control – I simply turned it off and it was fine. Shower gel and shampoo etc was provided. The TV channels were mainly Spanish, but included a couple of English-speaking news channels. The staff were friendly and helpful and the first thing we got was a map showing the location of the attractions of the city. The boat trip was very good, as was the tourist bus, both very informative in English and Spanish. We stayed 3 nights, but 2 nights would have been more than enough to see all the attractions of Cartagena.

Self-service breakfast was included in our price of 60 euros per night including parking. It was good – fruit juices, cereals, fruits, yogurts, cold meats, Serrano ham, cheese, a grill to make tomato and cheese tostadas, sweet pastries etc. A drinks machine dispensed various coffees, very impersonal but there was a real lack of staff. There was a really nice bar, but although we began our stay in peak season, this was never open afternoons or evenings. What a waste of a great facility! Sadly, we had to resort to the drinks machine. Very impersonal.

A much bigger downside was the poor wi-fi. It was not available in our room on the second floor and we could only use it in the public area on the ground floor. This was not good. For us, the whole point of wi-fi in hotels is being able to use the internet in our room, and the staff could not help. We are business people and we expected private internet access in our room as we were finalising a business deal. From the Tripadvisor reviews it is clear that the management have been apologising for the poor range of the wi-fi since January, but the Spanish do not seem at all bothered about losing business. Because of this we can only give Los Habaneros 3 stars. I would say to the hotel owners - stop dithering and get your wi-fi problem sorted. Also, why not employ someone to run the hotel bar to allow guests to have a social drink when they come in at night. A hotel without a night bar is a rather miserable experience, and there are no other decent bars nearby. When we came in at night, the reception staff hardly lifted their eyes from the computer. It seems a real shame that the receptionists are glued to their computers in the main reception area while the hotel bar next door lies unmanned and unused.

This would be an excellent hotel if the owners had the brains and inclination to get all the facilities working properly. But this is Spain in 2013 so it is unlikely to happen. This hotel could be so much successful. What a real shame.

On arrival we walked into reception to be greeted by the stench of sewerage ( I think - no one could tell me what it .was ) The terrace room we booked had apparently flooded so we were offered the choice of a different standard room or a 'special' room. The special room was larger with a spa so we took that, however there was no window in the room and given the smell downstairs.... I wasn't game to turn on the spa!
The staff were actually really lovely and apologetic, they tried their best, but we stayed out as late as we cold. In hind sight we should have left and looked for another place.
Disappointing

Room Tip: I heard the terrace was ok but never got there

Dear Elisabeth, I am very sorry that you feel disappointed after your stay here. It seems that smell came from the street sewage system which has already solved by the borough council maintenance. We did our best to make your stay excellent here, that's actually what we do (you can see many reviews other clients wrote). We do of course look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel very soon and try to change your mind.

Kind regards,
Antonio Santiago

Apart from the smell of sewerage as we walked in, the receptionist was fine but the terrace room we booked was "unavailable" and the "special" room they chose had no window! All in all, a very forgettable experience. To be avoided!!

This was a one night stay and on the whole we were happy that it wasn't longer. The welcome at reception was neutral bordering on brusque, the room was broadly acceptable but the window looked onto a sort of internal shaft in the building and directly over to other rooms. The beds were uncomfortable and rattled against the bedhead unless moved several inches away from the wall. The shower was difficult to get into (it would have been impossible for an elderly person or anyone with mobility problems) and there was no soap in the non-functioning soap dispenser. The garage was a bit of a rip-off at 10 euros a day but the room with breakfast (which was ok) was only 65 euros which was a fair price. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel that there must be better places to stay in the city. I would give this hotel two and a half stars.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel

The hotel was what we expected from it's reviews.
The room was clean, large and satisfactory. Effective air-conditioning kept the room as hot or cold as we wanted. The bathroom large and the shower very good. Plenty of hot water. WiFi is provided by 3 hour password enabled access. This was clearly explained and we were give 6 hours or arrival and told more would be available if we needed it.
The outside terrace was clean and generally service pleasant and satisfactory. However some staff did give the impression that client care was not part of their training.
The only area where we were disappointed, in hindsight, was relating to parking. We arrived on a Sunday and asked about parking. Reception told us that parking was available at 10 euro per night and explained how to access the parking area. It was only later that we discovered that on-street 'blue zone' parking directly outside the hotel is free on a Sunday until Monday morning as well as being free all night. Free day (white zone) parking was available within 100 metre of the hotel. This resulted in a 20% increase in our bill. A lot when on a tight budget.
Would I use this hotel again? Yes.

Thank you for sharing your experience with other travellers. I'm glad to hear that you stay here was mostly satisfactory. After investigating with the receptionists about the parking it seems that they thought you asked about the parking and not about parking for free. I apologize for the missunderstanding. I hope to welcome you back again in the future.
