There are very minimal displays, poor signage, and confusing entry. The top of the castle affords a gorgeous panorama of this lovely city

Firstly, pay the money to take the lift. It's a long way up, but the views over the port and the city are well worth it. The castle itself is interesting, with detailed history of the development of the city & port. Toilets are scarce, and if you follow the signs for them from the viewpoint with the cannons, you'll end up half way down the hill again.

The lift takes you up to this level and you can walk up to the castle, which costs extra to get in. Don't be confused by thinking admission to it is included with the price for the lift. You can find the lift if you walk along the seafront, with the port to your right, all along the length of the wall. Turn left at the end of the wall and walk on up about 250 meters.

For the views alone I say, "Go for it!" You're on your hollidays. Allow for about 2 hours minimum.

I only gave this place an excellent rating because the view of the surrounding area was unbelievably beautiful, city of Cartagena one way, sandy mountains in the sunny distance, big naval dockyard down below, and off to the beautiful blue Meditteranean sea in the distance. i saw all this from outside the castle, because unfortunately ladies and gentlemen, it was closed at 3.30pm on a Wednesday because of siesta!
It makes you wonder why a country like Spain, that is about to be shafted by the ecb/imf still has siestas, when obviously it would be far more productive to be open all day in the high season, to accept those tourist euros to keep the likes of concepcion castle open and presentable. And for people to come on the internet and say what a wonderful place it is.
I will be in Cartagena next year, and will come up there to enjoy what i went to the trouble of climbing that big hill last time, and please be open!
But then, still all the same, i saw a great view and it was FREE!

We bought a joint ticket for the Roman Theatre museum and two other attractions. Feeling slightly overwhelmed with all the choice we asked which they would recommend. We were advised to also visit the Castle and I am very glad we did.

The Panoramic lift has stunning views over the city and is worth it for the price alone. The museum is modern and gives a fascinating description of the history of Cartegena with all information clearly in English as well as Spanish. We were really glad we visited here as well as it complemented the Roman Theatre by explaining the whole history of the area rather than just providing a snapshot.

Good museum but not fantastic, could link the timelines of quite a complicated period a little more succinctly. Need to add more information about the geographic history of Cartagena.
