El Cosaco has a terrace on this quiet square where we shared a selection of tapas for lunch on a lazy Sunday….a blini ekatarina, Zakuski Romanov, eggs Roskoff and Chatka (crab) cocktail, accompanied by a shared Russian Baltika beer, chased by a couple of small glasses of ice cold vodka and followed by a short siesta!

Total for two: 48.20 euro including one half a litre of beer and 4 glasses of Stolichnaya

Like everywhere on a fine weekend, you need to come early to get a table outside. By 13.30 they’re almost always full with people having drinks before lunch and then you have to queue.

Within walking distance from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, in the heart of the old Vistillas quarter. I would select a choice of Russian traditional starters followed by their famous Steak Tartare (the best I’ve ever had by far) or (if you are not so much into raw beef) the duck in Cherry sauce. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Madrid and I always go back when I’m on town. I’m becoming a regular!

And try the vodka if you dare…

Within walking distance of the Plaza Mayor in central Madrid, El Cosaco is in a quiet little square with tables outside if the weather's favourable. I liked this restaurant because it had ambience, small and comfortable with tablecloths and candles, it exuded cosiness. The food was excellent. The menu ranged through fish and meat dishes, semi-international in character with overlays of Spanish traditions.
We had the set Imperial Menu at €78 for two, giving a cold smoked fish and caviar starter then two different steak dishes, one in a sauce and the other a Stroganoff, followed by dessert and coffee. It was all beautifully cooked. The wine list was reasonably priced and the set menu ended with coffee and a drink on the house.
There are many good restaurants in Madrid and probably many just as good as this, but if you want to be reasonably certain of good food and in cosy surroundings, this is it.

We just wandered in here as every other place was very crowded being a Saturday afternoon. Menu seemed limited though we are not familiar with Russian fare. Had the beef stroganoff and chicken Kiev. Beef stroganoff consisted of three meatballs with rice, and the chicken Kiev was one small piece of deep fried chicken stuffed with (?). It was accompanied with green peas (canned) and potatoes that reminded me of those matchstick potatoes in a can. Really awful. It was as dry as real matchsticks and tasteless. Would have been better to have a boiled potato instead. Also tried the chicken consomme with piroshki as a starter. It was a cup of tasteless chicken broth and a mini mini sized piroshki. All for 3+ euro. Menu prices in general, however, were low for Madrid, but we did not fancy this sort of cuisine. Locals were quite satisfied as far as I could tell so it must be quite popular.

I live 200 M from this restaurant. The food is ok, even "good" but it's not great Russian food, its also not cheap. If you want Russian and are in the area its fine, atmosphere is pleasant, service is good, menu interesting, but nothing worth going out of your way for. I also lived in Moscow for 3 years so I am familiar with Russian cuisine.
