We arrived early by Spanish standards as it was our first night in Madrid and hadn't quite got the hang of dining times (21.30-22.00 really does seem to be the time to sit down to eat). There was a bar area which was deserted, and we were shown through into the restaurant (also very quiet). Despite this we had a delicious meal - although if you aren't a fan of cod, this isn't the place for you as the vast majority of the menu is cod based. Our waiter was attentive, we had a menu in English and the food was reasonably priced. In typical Spanish fashion, there is little to accompany the protein. However, bread is served to mop up the delicious juices! We would certainly return here.

The place is very easy to find behind Puerta de la Sol square. It is open from 9:30 to 15:30(3:30pm) and from 17:30(5:30pm) to 23:00(11pm). Forget about everything else but:
1. Fried bacalau(€1.30) - piece of fried cod fish. The best fried fish we ever tried.
2. Croquetas(€0.85) - piece of fried cheese. Very crispy from outside and melting texture from inside. Delicious as hell :-)
3. Caña de Cerveza(€1.25) - a small size cup of beer. You may need two or three depending on the need.
According to Wiki "La Casa Labra is a bar-restaurant in Madrid located very close to the Puerta del Sol (Calle Tetuan, 12). The cover says its existence since 1860. It is famous for having been featured in the foundation of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party by Pablo Iglesias on May 2, 1879, which recalled by a plaque on the premises."
Be prepared to wait on line for the tapas and also to hustle a little bit for empty table outside.
The drinks are ordered at the bar but you can also order them from the waiter. The last ones are very friendly and always ready to serve you.
It is a place where one MUST visit during their stay in Madrid. We went there twice in one day and will go there again next time.

The variety of tapas is very poor. Avoid sandwiches - they are dry and really tasteless. The place is crowded probably because of its history. If you come for bacalao or Crockets it is OK, If you are looking for decent good/tapas - avoid it.

This place is a Madrid institution. Eat in or take out. The queues for take out can be long on weekends - but don't be put off. The fish is terrific. Fast food - Spanish style.

Every time we are around Sol in Madrid we have to drop by this very traditional Spanish bar to get a handful of croquetas de bacalao (crispy outside creamy inside and with a hint of cod fish, enough to be remarcably yummy, not too much to be fishy). Seems always to be super busy, but it just takes them minutes to through the warm food on either plates (for eating inside the bar) or in paper bags (to go)...
