We were not impressed at all by the value of this popular bar. We all (4 of us) agreed that the tapas were average while the total cost was above average. I feel it's not worth going out of your way... But if you are in the area the tapas de bacalao are probably the best hing we found on the menu.

Bar or pub from where civil war started and changed the map of Spain in term of Woman freedom and glory. this place is still quite and relaxing for visitor of SOL, as you will get quite place in middle of too much noise and glass of beer with fish fry ( compare to Indian joint glass of cutting tea and besan pakoda). I enjoyed this establishment which is operating since 1860. Not able to find too old things as most of furniture are aluminium based and serving style is also very contemporary. Only charm which i felt was smell of fish and plain small glass (150 ML) filled with Mahou beer.

Hubby and I walked by Casa Labra a few times and it was also packed with people nibbling on their famous tajada de bacalaos (lightly breaded cod) and cod croquettes. The first time we dined in the dining room in the back of the restaurant but quickly realized everything was slightly more expensive by about €0.1 - € 0.3. It was still a good choice if you want to rest your tired and achy feet for a bit and/or to get away from the cigarette smoke outside. We ordered 2 bacalao, 2 croquettes, 1 tuna with tomato, and 1 meat pastry. The tuna was nothing to write home about. The meat pastry had a nice flavour to it but not that special. The croquettes were ok as they didnt seem to contain too much of the actual cod. It was very finely minced and mixed with some kind of creamy filling. I'd suggest everyone to save their money for the bacalaos! The cod was very lightly battered and fried to a satisfying crisp on the outside. The cod itself was very meaty and yet flaky and moist. We had to order two more because it was so good! We went back to Casa Labra again before we left Madrid and this time, we followed the locals and waited in line for the freshly fried bacalaos. They may be artery clogging but hey, they are well worth it.

We've been at the restaurant part of the place, and I have to admit, it was a disappointment.
The food was not that good despite all the nice reviews online, the service was just awful, the waiter seemed to be bored and unwelcome. He couldn't even _try_ to speak English! None of us speaks Spanish and we had some troubles with understanding the menu. But did we get any help? Of course, no! All we've got was "dis ok, dis meat, dis fish". I think, they should have it like a slogan: "Smug waiters, tasteless food".
It was overpriced as well, but we just wanted to pay our bill and get out of there.

The huge crowd in the bar gave Casa Labra great atmosphere. We sat in the restaurant which was empty when we went in. The bacalao was very good and the prices were very reasonable.
