You get what you expect when you go to a classy place like this. Excellent service and food in a formal atmosphere in a nice neighborhood. Withbits associated costs

We had dinner at El Paraguas on a Friday evening. The first thing I liked, way before we even sat at our table was the atmosphere. It's as if you are entering an old world living room. And then the food was really top quality and variety. We had appetizers, main course, wine and dessert and everything was impeccable.

The service could be a bit better, they were very polite and all, but not as attentive as you would expect from a place like that.

It is expensive but I do believe it's worthy it.

After a mix-up withe reservations, I thought I was off to a bad start. They did seat us rather quickly and from then on, the night took off. From the thinly cut onion rings, to the main entree, this restaurant delivers. Not, cheap, but well worthily if you can afford it. Will definitely return .

When you pay almost 80 euros for your dinner, you expect kind service, good food and some attention. Not any of those arrived to our table the other day.
Food was ok, but with a permanent flavour of fish stock cubes. Lobster lasagna was full of shell bites, "bonito" meatballs were more than average, green beans greasy and non remarkable. The waiters just were there to serve the dishes and try to rip off another bottle of wine (absurdly expensive, by the way), but no smiles, no discretion, no permanent attention to the table. As a matter of fact we waited more than 20 minutes to ASK for the bill (they weren't there). Finally, the witer promised some courtesy drinks that were not coming until we asked for them (shame).
80 euros per person and a bad dinner after we went out. Nobody to give us our coats back. No one to say goodbye or just "thank you".
There are FAR better options in Madrid for asturian and spanish food. And much cheaper.
Won't come back.

Recommended by our hotel (Westin Palace) after a couple of bad suggestions over several nights. They were trying very hard to "make up" for our dissatisfaction and guaranteed we would enjoy. They were correct!!! El Paraguas was perfect! The restaurant was extremely busy--- always a good sign! Upscale neighborhood. Beautiful people! My wife had a fish dish that was very fresh and flavorly prepared. She also enjoyed the artichoke dish which must have been a favorite of the "regulars" since almost every table ordered. I had a tomato mozzarella salad which was the best I've ever tasted along with a lasagna special.

Downsides:
Seems like the servers were pushing to "turn tables". Our server did not speak English. Wine suggestions we not very thoughtful and seemed to provide fast decision versus questioning preferences.

Everything considered, it was the best dining experience of out five day visit!
