When you are on a transit stay in Barajas on the outskirts of Madrid near the Airport with a few hours to kill, call in for a drink and a snack at this great little Bar in the back streets of this little village. Jesus (pronounced hāso͞os) the owner has a good command of the english language and even understands Australian. I called into a few Tapas Bars in the Barajas area and whilst all are good, my Spanish is bad. It was good to find a bar that not only understood you but engaged in friendly conversation and made you feel comfortable and at home. Jesus put a "Men at Work" live tape on the Big TV screen, "Dire Straits" and talked on a wide range of subjects. The Beer was cold and the Tapas delicious. As a local, he also knows the area and can be used as a reliable information source to the local area and Madrid as a whole.
In fact if you are going to Madrid for a holiday there are some Very Good Hotels in the Barajas area which are very economical, close to the Airport (without the noise) and handy to Bus and Metro services to Madrid central. And if you mention my name to Jesus, i'm sure he will put an extra olive on your plate.
