Great for what you pay. Can be a little noisy at times. The roof top terrace is perfect for an evening drink. Staff could answer any questions we had. Close to the metro and within walking distance of the beautiful old part of the city. Was full of Australians around this time of year (not sure whether that's a draw card or not). Bottom line is that if you're traveling on a budget I'd highly recommend it.

I have stayed at the Mad Hostel a number of times over the last two years and it has always been satisfactory. The rooms are a little cramped and not the cleanest I know, but that's nothing you wouldn't expect at this price. The location is fantastic, staff is nice and helpful and there is free wifi in the common room. All in all, whoever doesn't mind compromising a little on space and noise will find a nice place to stay in Madrid at a great location for a great price.

Great location but don't come here if you want to get any sleep. The noise in the rooms is unbearable. The roof bar area is above the rooms, there is a massive common room away from the rooms which is basically just a big waste of space. The rooms are tiny- you can't have three people standing up in the same room and the beds are claustrophobically small. I would tell people to avoid this place at all costs. The breakfast is crap, there is a grumpy man who asks you what you want and then proceeds to give it to you with a scowl on his face. The kitchen facilities are the worst I have encountered so far,

I recently went away for five nights with 3 other friends for an architectural visit. We chose Mad Hostel as it was reasonably priced and quite close to the city. We were more than wrong - it was VERY close! The underground is less than a minute away, and you're about 10 minutes away from the buzzing plaza of Mercado de San Miguel which is an indoor market hall with a large range of stalls selling a variety of tapa.

The Hostel is incredibly clean! I've never been to one where the bathroom was cleaned on a daily basis. All linen was included and towels were not but this was mentioned on the website. The room was incredibly clean as well and there was a split air conditioner in the room that can be controlled at reception if you wanted it changed.
Extra blankets were provided free of charge when it got very cold!
And most brilliant thing was our bracelets (10 euro refundable deposit) accessed our main room door as well as individual lockers within the room, which can hold a decent sized hand luggage and backpack.
The bathroom was on a timer, where showers were 2 minutes long and sinks 30 seconds. But you just keep pushing the button if you wanted a longer shower. All new clean fittings!
Hot water was endless, with 4 people showering we never ran out, and there is a hand wash liquid dispenser beside the sink. Included was a hair dryer as well.

The bracelet also accessed the common room which was very social every night - we met Australians, French, Americans, Irish, Spanish and German throughout our stay of all age groups. There was even a group of middle aged business men at one point!
Pool table is provided at 2 euro a game and vending machines are there too. Comfy couches and you can relax in your pyjamas if you wish :)
Wifi access is available here which is very good, and very quick - if you're lucky you can even get it in your room since it's quite powerful.
Every evening a pub crawl would be going on if you wanted to join in.
All access kitchen with microwave included and fridge open throughout the day closing at 10 was great!
Breakfast in the mornings was more than expected, choosing out of: cereal, croissant and donut, and tea/coffee and orange juice! With unlimited toast with various jams.

All staff were very very friendly and helpful whenever we had a problem. And all spoke English fluently.
The location of the hostel is very safe as even one of us walked home along with no problems. And as the website suggested accurately, it is 25 euro taxi ride from the airport.
Nearby Aldi for quick food and even a Mcdonalds.

Only draw backs:
If you're sleeping in the bottom bunk, make sure you're not tall! You can't really sit on it, and you have to 'slide' to get into bed.
There is no bathroom rug so you tend to 'flood' the bathroom if you're not careful
It can be a little tricky to open the main door with the bracelet!
The main light switch is near the main door so you couldn't read in bed if you wanted to.
The main lift (we were on the third floor but walked it most of the time) is incredibly tiny and only useful to stick your luggage in and walk the steps instead.

Otherwise, brilliant place! And as suggested, not really a hostel but more like a modest b&b. And you wouldn't really need to get an ensuite room as the shared facilities are equally clean as we quickly found out.

Room Tip: top floor if you want a quiet room, second floor if its winter as its too cold on the top floor! I...

I just spent one day in this hostel. I had a 6 people mixed room with toilet.
Every room has personal compartment where you can safe store your stuff.
The room was very small but clean. The reception gave us all the information required (they spoke english and italian with us). The breakfast is ok: not a big choice (a croissant, a drink between coffee or milk, a glass of orange juice).
The common space is very clean. Nice people.
The location is very central and safe to walk in the middle of the night.
Also the price is good.
It is not the first hostel where I sleep and I can assure that the comparison with the worst that I saw is huge. I think that people that complain about hostel like this never visit other hostels or pretend to be in a hotel (that is a different service!)
I recommend it.

Overall, this is a really simple youth hostel, without much atmosphere. There is a toilet/shower block with showers that spurt for about 20 seconds at a time, and nowhere to put dry items down. The 6 bed dorms are a little small, with no extra floor space, and the lockers, while secure, are not big enough for a full/large backpack, but will fit small backpacks and your valuables.

They offer free breakfast however this consists of either a croissant, a donut or cereal, plus a coffee/tea/milk and a juice. There is very small kitchen (no toaster and only one hotplate).

One other point is that you can't bring alcohol into the hostel from outside, so you have to purchase cans from the vending machine to consume on the premises. This can be costly and is a real pain.

The hostel has a tiny gym but you can't really use it! There is a highly unsafe treadmill that causes electric shocks and also stops randomly at high speeds, half the equipment was also out of order.

A friend and I stayed had booked accommodation in Madrid in a little family-owned hotel but due to inavailability on the first night of our stay in Madrid, we booked one night at Mad Hostel. We were both really grateful that we only stayed one night too. The staff were relatively helpful and the hostel offers a breakfast and free Internet access, which is great, but I would not return to this hostel on the basis of its rooms and especially the bathrooms. The 4-person room we stayed in was minuscule, with barely enough room to turn around or even get onto the bunk beds. One positive aspect is that the rooms come equipped with a locker for each guest, so we were assured of the fact that our baggage was safely locked up while we weren't at the hostel. This hostel truly is a youth hostel, however, with lots of partygoers and, quite frankly, strange fellow guests. My friend and I (both young women) roomed with two men, one of whom slept for 19 hours consecutively, which forced us to whisper whenever we entered the room. Trying to be polite, we also didn't switch on the lights for fear of disturbing our roommate, but since he didn't leave the room at all when we were there, this made our stay even more uncomfortable. Another incident involving our other roommate really disturbed us too. When we checked in, a young lady checked into the room along with us. Later on in the evening, a male guest arrived and also checked in. My friend and I supposed that the girl had checked out in the meanwhile, as the new guest slept in the room that night. During the night, however, the girl had returned, and in the ensuing chaos it came to light that the hostel had overbooked the room and placed both the girl and the guy in our room. When she returned to her room and found a man sleeping in her bed, the girl alerted the hostel staff, who burst into our room and started harrassing the poor guy who was fast asleep. After treating him like a criminal and practically shouting at him, the staff finally realised that they had made a mistake, but instead of apologising to the guest, they made him get up, pack his bags and move to another room. Another low-point of this hostel is its bathrooms, which, honestly, I would not recommend at all. The bathrooms are more or less acceptably clean, but the showers are very uncomfortable, and there is practically no privacy for guests wishing to use the facilities. This hostel is okay if you are very young and willing to put up with being uncomfortable in return for not paying too much, or if you are in Madrid to party, but I would not return. For the same price, you can find other, much better, accommodation, such as the Hostal Las Murallas, which I would strongly recommend. It's the same price as Mad Hostel, but the service and the rooms are much better
