The hostal is terrible. Checked in around 8pm, the guy was more interested in talking to his wife on the phone during whole check in process (10mins) He didnt look at us once or seem bothered when we checked in. I work in Madrid, and speak spanish but Im Irish. This guy didnt want to talk english when he needed. Dont expect them to make too much fuss or effort in helping any way or talking in english.

The pillow cover, only covered half the pillow and the sheets was also a little small for the bed.
The room was very hot although we had to sleep with the windows open and the fan on all night which meant we couldnt sleep much with the noise.

The room looked into a large concrete wall on 9th floor. Not nice. looked like a prision cell.
We paid 20euro for the night, and I thought it was a bargain at the time... until we arrived.

Upon checking out, my wife was asked to pay 2euro extra per suitcase for leaving the luggage with them for a few hours whilst we had lunch as I had to work that day in madrid and couldnt take all the luggage to the office.

Room Tip: pay a little extra and get good service and clean rooms with what you´d expèct in a capital city

My family and I stayed here for two nights, two adults, two tweens, and a baby, and the staff was friendly and accomodating- but just be aware that they do not speak English but they try to understand as best as they can. We had a small balcony overlooking the city and the location is walking distance to wonderful areas of this interesting city. The air conditioner did not work in our room but the building has all of the charm you could ever ask for and it is clean and nice for central city, low priced accomodations.

We stayed in this hostel in August 2011, I am unhappy to write that there were only 3 nice things about this hostel; firstly Hostal Helena is situated near the metro hence commuting was very easy and convenient. Our room was air-conditioned which was a must as we were in Madrid in its warmest weather. Lastly, the cozy veranda of this hostel gave a nice view of the city.
The rest was disaster. We booked a room with a private toilet and I must say that it was indeed the smallest room and bathroom I have ever seen so far. I am a size 2 and I can barely fit in the shower room, there was even a time that the water ran out while I was in the middle of rinsing.
The staff didn’t speak English and we had the hardest time communicating with them that we had to use Google translate. The cleaning lady was so unfriendly that almost bordered hostility. She was our alarm clock every morning as her nagging at 8 am always woke us up. I am never staying in this hostel and my prison-like experience in this hostel made me decide not to EVER stay in a hostel again. If you want to have at least a decent stay in Madrid please consider other nice hostel.

Stayed at the Hostal Helena for about 4 nights. I think the owner booked us in the best room. It was quite large w/ a comfortable double bed and a small bathroom. The hostal didn't appear full so it was quite quiet, and on the top floor, u can't hear much of the busy street below.

Some small things: it didn't appear all the outlets worked and every time u used water in the bathroom (ie: flushed the toilet, ran the sink or took a shower) some weird drainage system was making a lot of noise. I am guessing the pipes are old and it's difficult to force up the water to the top floor of the building.

My only complaint is that the shower does not have good pressure. Takes a wee bit to get the water hot too, but that wasn't a problem for me.

Also, if u want to leave your bags at the hostel before 9am, should you get into the city quite early, well, she won't open the door for you because she's sleeping, and when she does answer the door at 9am in her robe, you feel guilty for waking her up.

It was a pleasant stay though.
