“A great experience at Alicia!”
Reviewed May 26, 2008

We loved the hotel. The location on the Plaza de Santa Ana was terrific. The junior suite was a fantastic room, with up to date conveniences. We loved the push-button blinds and the free standung bathtub. The staff was great in providing us services when needed. The continental breakfast was just right for us. We're telling everyone that the Hotel Alicia was a pleasant surprise and helped make our visit to Madrid a memorable one.

Room Mate Alicia is an intriguing hotel in old Madrid. We stayed on a Wednesday night (two rooms on the first floor for the three of us). We loved the place and would probably return if we could.

It hotel is well positioned for exploring Madrid, being about equal distance from Puerto del Sol (the center of Spain) and the Museo del Prado. It is right on the corner of the Plaza Santa Ana, which fills with cáfe and restaurant tables at night. In spite of that, the room was quiet due to the double set of sliding glass windows and the double shades between them.

The desk personal were very helpful and spoke English well. The rooms are large and comfortable. The emphasis is on modern design. For example, the shower stall is a glass box along one wall of the room. However, there are painted sections in strategic places, depending upon your height, but you must feel comfortable undressing and toweling off in front of your room mate. The toilet is separated by a door.

Another modern touch is the animated graphic in the lobby—it's the outline of a nude woman walking; almost like a Picasso line drawing come to life. It's not shown in the virtual tour: http://www.room-matehotels.com/eng/madridhotel/aliciahotel/include/alicia/vtour_alicia.html

The included breakfast was an excellent buffet with both cold and hot foods—including fresh orange juice!

The only problems encountered are the need for a little more soundproofing between rooms and the sliding door to the toilet not sliding. Since we were there for only one night, we didn't bother having them fix it.

We spent five nights in the hotel. Our room was modern and comfortable furnished. The location of the hotel is optimal. It' s surrounded by a lot of restaurants and bars. Many places of interest are within walking distance. The staff was friendly and helpful. There are cakes, ham, eggs, cheese, fruits and more on the breakfast buffet.

We enjoyed all the pleasant experiences noted by other travelers. The staff was very helpful with theatre reservations and restaurant recommendations.
The location on Plaza Santa Ana has numerous sidewalk cafes
and is walkable to other Plazas, the Prado, the Thyssen, Royal Palace, etc.
The hot breakfast was included, enjoyable and provided in the hotel's tapas bar immediatly adjacent.
Madrid is a very expensive, very cosmopolitan city. This was a geat experience and value.
You will enjoy your stay.

We stayed for six nights (May 2008) at the Room Mate Alicia. Very conveniently located to museums, primary tourist attractions, train station, etc. Outstanding central location on Santa Ana square. Price of taxi to most tourist sites was 5 Euros or less. Rooms are new, modern decor, spacious, with all needed conveniences. Stayed in fifth floor room and extremely quiet, even on weekends with the crowds in Santa Ana square. The buffet breakfast (included in the room price) at the "Tapasbar" restaurant next door was outstanding. The quality and wide variety of food choices was excellent. The Tapasbar restaurant is large with plenty of tables, and there was never a wait for a table even at the peak time for breakfast. The breakfast was available until 11:30 a.m. The front desk staff at the Alicia was very helpful, and there was always at least one staff member available that was fluent in English. An excellent hotel, with an outstanding location that was reasonably priced. Would definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — The location on Santa Ana square and spacious (for Europe) all new rooms.
  • Disliked — The tiny elevator, however in this converted historic builiding, a larger elevator is not feasible.

Everything about this hotel was wonderful: the location, the very helpful staff, the price. Anyone considering staying here should be advised that though the hotel is on the busy and popular Plaza Santa Anna it is NOT noisy because they used two barriers of double-paned glass when renovating: one on the exterior and another separate set of sliders inside that. The hotel is modern and hip and, frankly, a bit dimly lit for us middle-aged folks in the rooms owing more to the use of trendy lighting than on economizing, but that is a modest quibble. The staff is particular friendly and helpful. Indeed, having stayed at the Room Mate hotel in Granada on the same trip (Migueletes) my wife and I would highly recommend their properties. Breakfast, an ample buffet, is also included, which is no small thing given the value of the dollar.
